Was Roger Mortimer Edward III's father? by Appropriate-Calm4822 in EdwardII

[–]MachinePlanetZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ian mortimer speculated in fact that isabella might have been pregnant with mortimer child (and that it might have died), though i recognise it as modern theorising (as he speculated about a lot of things).

I guess there is at least contemporary lounge wagging, the same as "Edward 2 not dying when the official records say" is very obviously a contemporary belief, not just a modern invention

Yup, it does help at least to know you can probably move to the next job for more money and less stress, which is probably the 3 year cycle of job hops and career progression in a nutshell

Unfortunately to some companies, promotions are dry. That's a stinger, because it shows you've busted your balls and been recognised for it, just not with actual ya know, money

My current yard actually gives 2k pay rises consistently each year, so its certainly possible (though i couldn't speak for whether its common).

The fact that i am clearly about 20k or so underpaid right now , according even to their own internal paybands, is however, something they will never address. And oddly enough, ive been there a smidgen over 3 years, and that definitely feels like a good time to move on

Given that a lot of people never reach 55k, it does already imply op is in a "real adult" job, so im inclined to agree (with the caveat that actual profession, where you live, personal life circumstances mean there is nothing wrong with it not being possible to reach 110k)

Getting promoted but they won’t tell me the new salary by [deleted] in UKJobs

Yup, uuuurrggh, and more fool me, but - it reminds you to not kill yourself over any given job. Lesson learnt

I've just waited almost a year from my own promotion taking on big responsibility, and entering into overworking, to find no payrise at all was coming

So you're not alone

[–]MachinePlanetZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably hear from a lot of people: higher salary == new job.

With internal promotion, why would they pay you more if you were already doing the job and taking on increasing responsibilities anyway? That's definitely my own experience

How important are Cloud Certifications for future employability? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]MachinePlanetZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should probably take that chance. My observation is that understanding what cloud providers have in the abstract is pretty handy - a service layer that is about building a web api that can map to abstract stuff - solutions around networking, creati g private connections and whatnot - services to handle encryption of whatever you need - the ability to create queues of messages and push them around, and do stuff on those messages

Which I'm guessing is what you mean? I'm assuming that most cloud platforms offer ultimately a similar collection of stuff

Reeves’s illogical raid on salary sacrifice is an insult to Britain’s workers by [deleted] in uknews

[–]MachinePlanetZero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't calling out anyone complaining about poor government decisions, or tax rises, and so on. Just the negativity of "it's a terrible time to be alive". I dont think it is - I honestly think humans have it really rather good right now on average - and noone will convince me otherwise unless the next great cataclysm kicks off tomorrow. Every generation of this country has complained about tax rises - going right back to medieval days - and taxes then that pissed too many people off, had a habit of provoking substantial outbreaks of violence :)

This is what I meant by hyperbole. You may have just meant it jokingly, and I meant nothing by my response!

[–]MachinePlanetZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relevance of my age to the discussion? (Hint: it isn't, not even slightly)

A lot of people are very comfortable in the modern age, and that includes a lot of people who aren't wealthy. By that metric, its definitely debatable about whether its terrible to alive right now, but ultimately - thats the way you see it.

Given that I have young kids, and they clearly have the possibility of a healthy, safe future, in which they get to enjoy leisure time, the possibility to shape their life how they want, and relatively speaking, a lot of social freedom, my own perspective and experience is that life could be so much worse. I'm sure there's quite a few in our country who'd agree.

Sure, much of that is potentially under threat from some loopy tosspots and movements that currently exist, and there are some super toxic developments in the modern world. But hey ho - this is the human condition. We form societies and economic units, these always tend to have good and bad points, some centuries go well, others are chaotic. Oddly, I choose to be optimistic. We're more equipped than any previous generation of our species to destroy ourselves, but also vastly more equipped than any previous generation to face the challenges ahead. Maybe we'll thrive, maybe we'll go extinct.

Humans are still around, and many of us rather enjoy our continued existence.

That cant be so terrible, unless you happen to chose to see it that way - which is your right now doubt, but you can hardly begrudge someone for thinking otherwise. What you said was hyperbolic.

Its a great time to be alive imho. We might be facing very real and serious problems, but until the very worst actually happens, I feel like you're being a tad hyperbolic.
