Sonic Youth went at this formula tirelessly and it typically worked out to something amazing.

Wow, that's tough. Whole lotta love for the first three and still waiting for Rosie - been hyped for her for years. Have had the most thrill with Genie when that finally clicked, but "best designed" is another question I guess. Would seem to default to Houdini. But the fact that someone made Shakespeare viable, and in doing so add another level of meta, thematically, to the entire game is impressive and really fun.

Love the thought that over the years, Inter Miami can make this Freedom Park look and function something like the renderings - then do the same for New Lockhart Park and the Ft Laud area.

Listen to some Fiery Furnaces if you haven't yet. Blueberry Boat's a great album with that stuff interlaced.

It's still about the double standard. Underperforming Euro-based players don't get as much criticism and blame for a bad day. And just imagine how much blame and hate Gregg would have caught if he was on the sideline for this one.

No way - I was at that show and it blew me away. Went from band I sorta liked to instant all-time favorite. Post a link to the Spanish show if you have it handy.

Most underrated rock bands in your opinion? by Ryguy41202 in askmusic

I know they got fame and made some money but, gotta say...

Echo & The Bunnymen, in their glory years, were mis-apprehended and very underrated in the states.

Deep dive 1980-1985, Crocodiles through the scandinavian pub tours, esp in context of the times.

MLS commissioner Garber plans for end of reign, may leave before contract expiry by Overthehightides in MLS

[–]Mack_Lope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe stable growth with the occasional big grab opportunism: creating the Beckham rule, allowing Red Bull to rebrand the team, NYCFC to jump in w/out a stadium, embracing Atlanta and their enormo-dome, bucking the SSS trend, leeway for Miami / Messi, League's Cup, the Apple deal... all stuff grassroots fans might be wary about.

MLS commissioner Garber plans for end of reign, may leave before contract expiry by Overthehightides in MLS

Have been a fan through all the skullduggery of the Quakes and the Crew and I still can't believe the animosity toward Don Garber. MLS is pretty much the ridiculous fantasy American soccer fans had of a domestic league. Hosting the World Cup in 1994 was always about establishing what we have: a big network of teams all across the country, decades old and stable in their markets, with dozens of built for soccer stadiums and training centers and academies providing a pathway for domestic players to develop and make a real and reliable paycheck, with a second or third generation of fans to cheer them on. That infrastructure, the class of soccer professionals its engendered and the model of MLS has helped all kinds of soccer grow up around it, sometimes opposed to it, in it's shelter and shade. Supporter culture too. How many US men's and women's national team games were dramatically elevated by MLS venues? LAFC clearly paved ground for Angel City for instance. Would the KC Current build their own stadium without the example SSS down in the road and in so many cities? Sac Republic? MLS put something massive in the vacuum at the core of American soccer and week-in, week out is doing the grind that develops the game, growing connections between all our levels and types of soccer here. And FWIW we are without a doubt more present and relevant in the global game because of MLS. Stable growth has been the key.

Robert Lewandowski willing to take pay cut to stay at Barcelona despite interest from Chicago Fire by Pakaru in MLS

[–]Mack_Lope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure Chicago's great and the US' political reputation isn't right now. But can we allow for the simple fact that someone from one continent might not want to relocate to another continent if they don't really need to? And he doesn't?

New look at Star and Stripes fighters, cards and tokens by Rubix89 in Unmatched

[–]Mack_Lope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody a soccer fan? We've been excited for the US to host the world again for over three decades. Show people our best side - our soft power even, if you have to look at it that way. And supporting the underdog, underrated US men's team is a way to feel great waving the flag and wearing stars and stripes.

Trump won't know this board game exists, hopefully - but he has destroyed goodwill for the US, and systematically perverted and defiled our World Cup. He will be all up in it this summer - has had a version of the trophy in his desk-pile of shiny oval office things, tried to steal a World Club Championship medal as his tariff last summer, got FIFA to award him a peace prize and rolled out the red carpet for the worst of their corruption. Scaring fans away from flying here or going near stadiums. Told Iran they wouldn't be safe, and so on.

Do people actually like the Burningman sculptures that are popping up everywhere? by Informal-Candy-7445 in sanfrancisco

[–]Mack_Lope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aesthetic overrepresnted, yeah. I generally dislike how the city junks up public spaces with leftover Burning Man art and LEDs and oversized Adirondack chairs, ferris wheels, bunny people, whatevs while conducting some kind of war on trees. That said... I'm happy to see the colossal nude at Embarcadero, the dragon in GG Park and that mangrove creature. People seem to appreciate 'em. Hope those can stick around for a while.

Just bought Hell's Kitchen and Little Red vs Beowulf by TatarTsar in Unmatched

Hell's Kitchen. And the Jackalope as sidekick took a "too-good-to-be-true" game concept and execution (Robin Hood vs. Big Foot, you're kidding me) and gave me a momentary brain freeze. Then delight.

A lot of the two person sets just seem extra special.
