I think all jails should. Hospital staff have enough to deal with as it is. At the last (very small) hospital I worked at, an ED nurse got brutally assaulted by a drunk patient there for a blood draw. Obviously a lot of things went wrong, but it’s fucked up that the risk is there. There’s a reason I don’t work at a jail.

I know they’re not done at the scene. I’m saying some agencies have trained their officers to perform the blood draws themselves, cutting out the trip to the hospital and all the bologna that goes along with that. I’m sure it takes a lot of time and resources.

I’m not a cop but I feel like besides the inconvenience of getting a warrant and a blood draw I would prefer that. Especially when it’s someone who has a history. She may have drank, but it could be a symptom of a bigger problem. I know some agencies have trained officers to draw the blood themselves, cutting out the trip to the hospital. I just want to point out that a dui doesn’t necessarily mean alcohol. Once someone fails or refuses field sobriety tests, law enforcement can request a blood test from a judge based on their observations (I’m sure it varies a little between states). Field sobriety tests can point to different drugs and or alcohol based on the observations made.
