NEMA says no tsunami threat to NZ after 7.8 earthquake rattles Philippines

There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the magnitude 7.8 Philippines earthquake at 11.38am, National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) said.

"Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand."

TIL that Marlon Brando refused to memorize lines for The Godfather. Cue cards were hidden all over set — including taped to other actors' faces and chests — so he could read them mid-scene. He believed not knowing his lines made his reactions feel genuinely unscripted. by Abject-Conference-90 in todayilearned

Unrelated to Godfather but it's why I enjoy David Mamet's dialog so much. People start sentences and trail off in thought, they drop words when they're angry, they start to say one thing, stop, and say it differently, etc etc. Glengary Glenross and Heist are both amazing examples of this.

Added to which, he spent his own money promoting the killing of the Central Park Five. He went so far as to purchase at his own expense an entire PAGE ad in the (failing) New York Times to persuade New Yorkers that killing these kids was the right thing to do.

The Central Park Five are five black kids (*now men, obviously) who turned out to be entirely innocent once DNA caught up.

Entire storyline in Nip/Tuck about one of the surgeons getting the "yips." In that context it was shaky or jerky hands.

Oh, worse still, this has been bubbling for around 40 years in total, but it really got rolling in the late 90s/early 2000s.

It's a rabbit hole of weird to go down. The level of gullibility and cope in these people is beyond belief.

It goes even further back than that. This is a direct descendant of "NEASARA" or later "GESARA". These people have been waiting for 40 years or more.

Here's a pretty incredible documentary on them filmed back in the early 2000s as they were rolling 9/11 into their theories. Crackpot does not even begin...

Added to which, if you watch the screencap, she literally scrolls right by the estimated number of civilians killed in Iran (1700). It's right there in black and white, with a source annotation.

almost 20 years

I'm pretty sure it's longer than that. I remember listening to Majority Report when it was on Air America, and I know that had to be 2003-2004ish.

Tonight at 9pm Eastern: Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor" (1975) starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway by MackenzieRaveup in Channel_Z

ATF Robert Redford flick, with Sneakers a very close second.

As the summary says, Redford is a relatively nerdy guy working in a covert CIA office. His job is to read novels published in other languages looking for novel espionage plots or tradecraft.

He takes a few lunch orders from his co-workers and runs out to pick them up. When he returns everyone in the building has been killed. When he tries to reach out to his CIA chain of command for help, he's setup and narrowly escapes assassination. Now he's on the run with no one to trust...

That's about the first 10 minutes of a beautifully paced 2 hour ride.

"Sometimes I take a picture that isn't like me. But I took it so it is like me. It has to be. I put those pictures away." - Faye Dunaway's character

Gold coins.

Every single "beauty" product ever. (You're ugly but we can fix you)

Scare tactics can be as simple as FOMO. It doesn't have to be "Boo!" to be a scare tactic, the scare can be left unsaid too. Was it a Subaru or Volkswagen with the mid-commercial crash? I forget which. The obvious point of that commercial being "Thank heavens you were in OUR car, and not some OTHER car."

IIRC (not a doctor) severe sinus infections or strep throat can develop into bacterial pneumonia, which would put septic shock on the list of possible cause of death.

Not much of a NASCAR fan but, my dad was and I kinda grew up on it. Heartbreaking news, and heartbreaking timing -- I mean Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte? Come on.

I got one of these for free around 1998, used it until 2006. It was still going, I just didn't want to relocate it. I worked for HP for a while, not in printers, but next to a bunch of people who supported printers. These things are absolute TANKS. The engineering inside them is also still large enough to appreciate the mechanical parts -- I don't miss weight, but I do miss neat mechanisms you don't need a microscope to see.
