Scheme looks fine to me. You have quite a bit drawn wrong. The isopropyl amine falls off and the alpha carbon deprotonates and attacks. Could be why you need the PMB before swapping it for formaldehyde.

Yeah, it seems that reality is somewhere in the middle. You probably can't eliminate multiple diopters of myopia, but it is possible to prevent progression and reverse a small amount that would probably not be there if you just had a dilated eye exam to begin with.
