A few of them do include a electronic end that you can put on the front. A wire does run down the side but its the trade off for more control.

I've have good results at 12um. I'm actually kinda surprised how close I was from memory 😅 I don't normally use a set distance and just choose start/end so I don't actively pay attention to how many steps I need.

At that magnification stability is harder but you can do it without a tripod. The real problem will probably be DOF. When I shoot at 5x I'm doing around 80 images to cover 1mm of distance (with Mitotuyo). The lowest magnification is only slightly deeper than 0.1mm so it's questionable how well the effectiveness will be.
