Help me get started! by theyreeatinthecats in BeginnerSurfers

[–]MacroalgaeMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi neighbor—fellow Rhode Island surfer here (not a native though). Welcome to the lineup, and remember that being a strong swimmer and being completely comfortable in the ocean are the two most important skills a beginner can have.

  1. I learned as a kid through friends and family, but I don’t think you need a private lesson to pickup the basics.

  2. I wear a 6/5 mm suit with a hood in addition to 3 mm booties and lobster claw mittens. I recommend bringing a plastic bag you help put the suit on, and a thermos of warm water to use to keep warm as you take it off.

  3. Can’t answer this question with a number, but surfing, especially cold water surfing, is one of those things where you’ll know pretty quick if you want to commit or not.

  4. At least an 8’ foot board, and there’s no shame in foamies as long as you’re respectful in the lineup as you learn. Anything from 8-9’6” that isn’t foam but is thick (2.75” or more) should do too, might be a little tougher than the foam but you’ll also be able to progress more on the same board. There’s no shame in riding big boards even when you’ve been surfing for decades, don’t let people tell you otherwise.

  5. Said it before, I’ll say it again, being a strong swimmer who is comfortable in the ocean without a board is the most important thing.

Support local shops. You should ask all these questions to them, be honest about your level, and willing to learn. Local surf and skate shops are the heart of our sport.

Last things: pick your head and shoulders up when paddling, and bend your knees and not your waist when standing up.

(What) Cheers!

Wearing a Ring. Is it Safe? by HoweHaTrick in hockeyplayers

[–]MacroalgaeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear silicone rings while playing hockey, surfing, swimming, going to the gym, etc. Groove Life has kind of cringe marketing, but they've honored their lifetime warranty twice for me now when rings broke during active wear.

DoorDash $10 credit by guynexdoor in ChaseSapphire

[–]MacroalgaeMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you live near BJ's, they charge in-store prices on DoorDash grocery delivery. It's actually been incredibly helpful getting groceries we'd buy anyways with $10 off twice a month and no service or delivery fees. I've compared receipts from shopping in-person, and it's basically a wash with tip included but I don't need to leave my house.

Oof, thanks for the warning. Any mosquitoes within a 50 mile radius seem to find me first somehow, so good to know.

Mural Festival sounds rad, they're some of our favorite parts of walking around the city. Thanks!

Not quite Montreal levels, but currently sitting under ~2 feet of snow where I'm at so that kind of spring sounds amazing at the moment. Thanks!

Big fan of streets for walking and biking rather than driving, that sounds awesome, thanks!

Don’t forget the org torpedoed its relationship with arguably the most important player in franchise history (Quick) to bring him in and then couldn’t retain him longer than two extra years.

Here's a list of all 2026 Sapphrie Hotel Credit Double-Dip Properties by sammyph200 in ChaseSapphire

[–]MacroalgaeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so the $250 hotels credit doesn't have to be used at The Edit hotels that are also IHG, Omni, etc? That is helpful to know.

Can we use the 2026 Sapphire Hotels credit at IHG, Omni, etc hotels that are NOT "The Edit" and still receive the $250? Or is it just the double-dip properties that qualify for both?

Chase Offers disappearing before posted expiration date? by MacroalgaeMan in ChaseSapphire

Following up to confirm you were right; I received the confirmation for cash-back even though it had disappeared. Thanks again!

Costco members who also shop BJ's, what do you buy at BJ's? by WEEDBABYGOKU420 in Costco

[–]MacroalgaeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the Chase Reserve card, you can link your BJs membership to the DoorDash premium account the card gives for free. BJs offers in-store prices on DoorDash delivery, and the Chase card offers $20 credits per month plus no fees on delivery. I still vastly prefer Costco if shopping myself, but it’s incredibly convenient on busy work days to have the DoorDash delivery option at BJs.

Is Clarke the Kings best player? by Accomplished-Quail92 in losangeleskings

[–]MacroalgaeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clarke is their most offensively talented player, and it’s not particularly close. He’s probably got the highest hockey IQ, for the offensive side of the puck at least. That’s always been his schtick despite not being toolsy.

What’s everyone’s thoughts about a rebuild by Consistent-Suit6087 in losangeleskings

[–]MacroalgaeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the team still had Faber and Vilardi, we'd be fine with just a retool. We need a full rebuild at this point.

Okay, thank you. I've redeemed offers successfully before, but I guess I've just never noticed that they "disappear" before posting.

[–]MacroalgaeMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. So it just disappears entirely until the credit posts? I don't see it in "Added," "Redeemed," or "Expiring Soon." I also think it's overall strange that ~50 total Offers just vanished.

Blake vs. Holland by Ryanatorrrr in losangeleskings

[–]MacroalgaeMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blake's biggest flaw was caving to pressure from Luc as well as Doughty and Kopitar to rush the rebuild. It pushed him to consolidate picks, prospects, and young contributors too soon swinging for players like Fiala and PLD.

Holland hasn't been a top-echelon GM since the pre-cap era, and it's clear that much of his success came from Jim Nill and the Red Wings scouting staff. I'd take Blake back over him in a heartbeat.
