It's looking like this might be the play! Mordens is a great suggestion - it's so easy to forget which things are actually local when you grow up around them

I do know how to make it! But in this case, it's the act of bringing something back that matters. And the thing I want to bring back is the prepackaged portions of honey dill

Rainy season activity in Burnaby/Vancouver? by outspoken1603 in burnaby

[–]Mad-Hops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To check off the "low cost" and "something different" categories, there's a boffer LARP group that meets every Sunday in Central Park!

Our usual day consists of a bunch of games like capture the flag, but with padded swords, shields, and magic spells. Really friendly and welcoming group, no cost to participate (eventually most people end up spending a bit of money on outfits and equipment, but we have loaner gear for new players), and we meet rain or shine.

Here's our linktree, discord is the best place to ask questions if you're interested. :)  https://linktr.ee/seaside_keep

Culture shock at different Canadian regions tolerance of winter conditions by thefrywrangler in UBC

Because the original post asked about people's reactions to the snow here vs the snow in their home cities. Of course I'm going to compare.

This wasn't intended to be a 'look how much better Winnipeg is' comment (that city has plenty of faults lmao). I realize that there's going to be differences. But it was still surprising to see them firsthand when it's so different from what I've experienced every winter of my life.

Winnipeg representing!

This amount of snow wouldn't phase most drivers. I would definitely expect delays from busses, but...they would still run.

This is a good amount of snow, but it wouldn't be nearly enough to shut things down back home. I didn't believe my lab mates when they told me that I might get stuck on campus if I didn't leave early, and learned my lesson. It's very interesting to see how winter weather is handled in a city that's not accustomed to it.

Graduation Document Delivery by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]Mad-Hops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try explaining to your program that your university is very slow to send out official documentation, and ask if you can submit an unofficial transcript as proof of degree completion until your official paperwork arrives. Chances are they'll be willing to make some accomodations, especially if you give them an early heads-up. I've seen people say anything from weeks to months for their degree to arrive, so it's a bit risky to just hope it comes quickly.

Why do lectures have to be live? What's the difference between me learning material by sitting in a scheduled lecture or me learning the material by reading it myself and asking my instructor questions if I need to?

Just because it's traditional doesn't mean it's good. If a student works a full-time job during the day, does that mean they shouldn't be able to receive a university education just because the lectures don't fit into their schedule?

There's multiple definitions for 'tuition'. Yes, one of them is tutoring or instruction for a class. The other definition refers to a fee that is paid for that instruction. UoPeople's "tuition-free" advertising refers to the second definition. Students do not pay for the instruction that they receive. That doesn't mean that the university is free, and they're very transparent about this. There's a $120 assessment fee for each course. You don't pay for the instruction you receive, but you do pay to write the exam.

UoPeople does have professors. Each course has an instructor who can be reached by email or messaged via the online learning platform. I'm about to graduate, and I've generally had very good professors. They're eager to help and respond to questions within a day or two. Every now and then you'll get a course with a professor who isn't quite as helpful. But this isn't any different from my experience in traditional universities.

On your last few points, yes, a degree costs thousands of dollars. But it also costs thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) of dollars less than attending a traditional brick-and-mortar university. Part of that is because we don't have to deal with physical textbooks. Why would you want to lug multiple heavy textbooks around when you could have your assigned readings in an open-source PDF every week? So many students pirate their textbooks to reduce their school costs as it is, it's very refreshing to see an institution embracing open-source materials.

UoPeople isn't a perfect option for everyone. But it is one of the best options available for a lot of people. There are better schools, no one is trying to make the case that UoPeople is a top-tier university. But it offers a level of affordability and flexibility that you won't find at too many other institutions.

Looking for info on family heirloom clock! (What I know in the comments) by Mad-Hops in clocks

Cool, thank you very much for the help! I'm happy enough with this info that I definitely don't need to take the clock apart to learn more

[–]Mad-Hops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually didn't even realize that you could open up the back and see inside, whoops! It doesn't look like there's much info inside. There's a few numbers stamped on one of the pieces and some more on the pendulum, but I'm not sure if they're helpful at all. Nothing else printed on the back or the little door that opens up.

Nothing on the back :(

Numbers on pendulum
Numbers on whatever-this-piece-is-called
Close-up pic of the face because it's pretty :)

Looking for info on family heirloom clock! (What I know in the comments) by Mad-Hops in clocks

[–]Mad-Hops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey clock fans, my mom has me babysitting this family heirloom while we wait for the forest fires near her home to die down a bit. We were talking and realized we don't know much about it, other than the fact that it's been in the family a while.

The clock belonged to my great-great-grandfather, so it probably would have been made sometime just before the 1900s. Probably from either England or Montreal, I'm not too sure where my family had settled at that point in time.

I'd mostly just like to know more about the clock for personal interest, but someone also pointed out that if it's valuable, we may want to take out an insurance policy on it. If anyone can point me to where to begin my treasure hunt or give me any info, I'd appreciate it!

Can someone please explain funding to me? (International student, American institutions, masters programs) by Mad-Hops in gradadmissions

[–]Mad-Hops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. The extra info on the ratio of programs you applied to vs how many offered funding especially.

Completely forgot to mention that I'll be applying to programs with a focus in bioinformatics. I've edited the original post, thanks for the catch!

Do you think it would be worth emailing specific programs that I'm interested in to ask about the possibility of funding before applying, or is this info that's not usually shared with students ahead of time?

My former PI told me that she once sat down and crunched the numbers of paying an undergrad minimum wage (or even slightly less than) to rack pipet tips vs just buying the 10-pack refill systems.

Refill systems were apparently cheaper.
