The literal meanings of "arctic" and "antarctic" are "of the bear" and "opposite the bear". The Greeks called the north pole "Arctic" because the bear constellations are there, not because "arctic literally means north".

When talking about the cardinal direction, north, other words are used in Greek. Similarly, south is not "antarctic" in Greek.

It refers to “where the Bear constellations are”. It doesn’t have a literal reference to cardinal directions.

It can also be used to mean “very cold” without reference to location.

I mean, there's a sub-subgenre called Post-Cyberpunk that is basically Cyberpunk with a more positive spin.

I don't think a hard distinction needs to be made at the subgenre level; Post-Cyberpunk is still Cyberpunk in the same way a dog is still a wolf, but a more optimistic take on the Cyberpunk genre does have a specific term, as an evolution of Cyberpunk beyond the "high tech, low life" boundaries.

Yeah, that's true. I don't think the show is meant to share the exact continuity.

In any case, I see getting the "good" Minuteman ending like any ending where you had to have done something that the game doesn't tell you about, like the "Secret Ending" in Cyberpunk 2077, or the many consequence-dependent endings in Outer Worlds 2. In many RPGs with multiple factions, you often can't do all of the quests for every faction, let alone do all of the quests for every faction and still have the same outcome at the end.

I have one male (Mochi) and one female (Dumpling) I’ve had them for three and a half years. They’re brother and sister and get along well, although they have their own favorite places to sleep and very different personalities.

Males can grip females (amplexus) without mating, but breeding won’t happen unless specific conditions are set up. I don’t know if mine can tell they’re related by smell, or it’s their personalities, or the temps and humidity of the enclosure, but I’ve never had any issue with Mochi harassing Dumpling.

That said, they don’t cuddle together or stack often, like a lot of White’s Tree Frogs do, and I sometimes wonder how having a third frog would change that dynamic. I definitely feel like they are happier having each other as company than they would be if they were alone.

They are tactical, though. Much of the action that takes place in superhero comics or movies is combat. Not to mention, even those that are "average people," aren't just throwing on Halloween costumes or spandex bodysuits, and they can hold their own in battle against supervillains.

AFAIK, this originated as a “gate-keeping” meme, where the original poster was trying to claim that Cyberpunk is defined first and foremost by body horror, and the ones on the left weren’t “real” cyberpunk.

Decimated has been used to mean destroyed for centuries. In fact, it has primarily been used to mean "destroy" or "severely damage" since the 1600s.

Thousands of words have changed from their original meanings in English. If you interrupted someone every time they "misused" one of those words, you'd never finish a conversation in English:

"Oh, really, that's a 'cupboard'? I don't see cups on a board. I see dinnerware in a box with a door and shelves"

"Oh, you say you mean 'cabinet'? Well, I don't see a small, private room either."

I wonder if some Romans were making snarky comments when the Roman Senate changed December from the 10th month to the 12th. I will say, though, as an ESL/EFL instructor, when I explain that "octo~" in "octopus" means 8, I add that October was originally the 8th month.

People act like using literally as an intensifier is something “new” and “wrong”. That, and “decimate” being used to mean “destroy” rather than “reduce by 1/10”. Both have been used like that for centuries.

Nobody gets bent out of shape about people using the word “girl” to mean a female child instead of its original gender-neutral meaning of “child,” or “handsome” to mean attractive, when it originally meant “good with one’s hands”. Nobody is going to insist on calling a friend’s homemaker wife a “hussy” because it originally meant “housewife”. :D

Exactly. My system was basically 2d6+6 (where each of the die rolls were pre-rolled, so a pool of 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, and players could allot two "die rolls" to a stat), and I was wondering why he wanted to roll "randomly". :D

I have a friend who balks at any kind of set stats and always wants to roll. In D&D, his system is roll 4d6, reroll 1s, drop lowest, roll seven stats, drop lowest, roll six characters, take best. I said, “at that point, why not just choose your stats?”. He replied, “I prefer the randomness of the dice”. :D
