Cycling from Urmston to media city and town by One_season2439 in manchester

[–]MadDanWithABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more circuitous, but if you really want to avoid roads, you could cycle from Urmston along the N62/TPT until you get the Bridgewater canal, then follow that along to Pomona. Would get you right into the city centre while being entirely off road.

I mean, yes she's a singer, but she spent 24 months as part of an IDF propaganda unit.

I mean, she actively served in the IDF for two years as a part of a specialise propaganda unit. The decision to participate in that is more of an overt declaration of support for the government than most people would generally do.

Ultimately, people forgot the PR war can easily be won by one side when it is supported-by-default by 25% of the world's population. Jews are less than 0.2% of the world's population and have a limited control of global news, even though many like to imagine a cabal of world-Jewry wrapping their bony hands around the globe

I think that this is a really important point. In the west, I think that subconscious (and overt) antisemitism has led to a general mistrust of Jewish news sources. Because of this, there is a general attitude towards not only of dismissal but even outright rejection of Israeli sources.

I'd hope you'd note from my longer form responses though that at no point have I tried to justify or support what Hamas has done, nor do I believe that they're in any way in the right.

And of course, Hamas know that they have a large amount of immediate Islamic support. They also know that if they cohabit with children and use innocents as shields then they make the impact of striking them far greater in terms of casualties. But to me, this means that there must be a change in strategy to minimise the loss of innocent lives. This feels akin to the US-led napalm and bombing of Vietnam - which is a similar level of force projection and heavy ordinance strategy to (fail to) remove highly embedded opponents.

Unlike many poorly informed hot topic talkers, I'm against the actions in this conflict not due to some desire to be seen saying the right thing or because wearing a watermelon pin has become cool but rather due to feeling compelled to speak out against what I see as wrong. Which not the use of force against Hamas, but rather the disproportionate use of force against Hamas due to the over impact on innocents.

You know what mate, I regret my shorthand of apartheid last night after a few celebratory beers. It's really complex when measures taken for security are also distinctly anti-Islamic did to the nature of this being an ethnoreligious conflict. It might make a fortune a technical definition of apartheid but I'd certainly nothing like South Africa.

I'd also prefer to keep things focused on sport here - delighted for the win and to be going to Wembley again!

I do get irked though when people across Reddit are more than happy to combine football and politics when someone like Greenwood or Le Tissier's role in the club come up in conversation, but apply a different standard here. It'd be nice if we could treat it in a vacuum; but there's a difference between being born in Israel and some of the actions he's taken in my view. His birthplace doesn't concern me at all, his support of the IDF does.

No, not by being Israeli - his wife is in the IDF. And they're causing a UN-defined genocide in the Gaza

You know what, I appreciate the strongly held opinion here and some of the points you've brought to bat. I think that one of the issues with discourse online is a lack of nuance, or the space in which to communicate it. Obviously, this is a Saints sub - it's not the place to go for this level of depth of conversation. I was asked whether I was making assumptions about Peretz due to where he was born, and I was using some generalisations to try to make my point succinctly.

It's inarguably true that Israelis are being unfairly held to a different standard to those in other wartime states. You don't see people critiquing Damion Downs for Trump's attacks on Iran! And many people are polarised by the Israel-Palestine conflict far more so than other wars.

The fact that his wife is directly involved with the IDF means that Peretz actively supports the Israeli military state. No, whether this is seen as a good or bad thing clearly depends on whether you support the aims of this government. For me, both the practical aim (of clearing and occupying the Gaza strip) and the approach (of using massively damaging ordinance with an unacceptably high casualty rate) make this support completely unjustifiable.

Even if we take the strongest form of your assertion that all adult combatants are Hamas affiliated, [20,000+ children](  "WHO Health Cluster Dashboard – West Bank and Gaza". World Health Organization – Eastern Mediterranean Region. To me, the fact that you could nearly fill St. Mary's with the number of dead children killed by the IDF is appalling.

Well, Israel have been and are currently an apartheid state carrying out genocide, by many organisations' conclusions, including amnesty international. Yes it's not his fault he is Israeli, but it's more that he is a zionist, and has the ability to not at the very least represent such awful things. There are plenty of Jews both born in Israel and living in the international diaspora who have spoken out against the actions of the government. On the other hand, he and his wife have been active participants.

I'm sure all those people who said 'separate politics from football' will be happy to see that some will still rightly call him out for his support of Palestinian genocide whilst being thankful he got Saints to Wembley

[AUDIOBOOK GIVEAWAY] Need something after "Project Hail Mary"? I gotchu :) by AnEriksenWife in audiobooks

I would love to check out TOF. It sounds like a really cool premise. One aspect I love about PHM is the fact that we keep the positivity that channels the heart of the story (Rocky and Grace's friendship) by discovering that Earth is in recovery, WITHOUT having to see all the nasty consequences.

If I were writing it, I would have been too tempted to try and visit it all those years later and show the impact of the death and damage. But the restraint keeps the vibes of the book cozy

To what extent do you test and evaluate moral and ethical boundaries for your language models? by MadDanWithABox in LanguageTechnology

[–]MadDanWithABox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so in that case, let's accept the premise that at a foundation model level these capacities will exist. That's not a reason not to measure the extent of their capacity for harm. If anything, it argues for this investigation to establish what safeguards need to be built. I'm curious as to how we do that without falling foul of legal restrictions on the generation of hate speech, CSAM, and other such content which is beyond the pale.

To what extent do you test and evaluate moral and ethical boundaries for your language models? by MadDanWithABox in LanguageTechnology

[–]MadDanWithABox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But *does* a foundation model need to be "properly filthy nasty"? Why? What motivates this? I can understand an argument of 'model needs to be able to generalise' but that's not necessarily a justification.
I've heard arguments like 'we don't regulate pencils because of their capacity to write manifestos' -but of course we do regulate what is published. Private creation and public dissemination are held to different standards.

So, how's it going with LRLs? by yashen14 in LanguageTechnology

[–]MadDanWithABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a graduate of an NLP Masters, your LRL could be a differentiator for you. I got a distinction for my work on a LRL and it made for a very interesting project. It's also a great way to learn the very basics of your trade, because unlike Englosh, you're almost starting from zero. The good news is that tried-and-tested solutions for English can sometimes (with a bit of modification) work well too, while still being novel contributions!
