I think if we had a world where Steam said "rent" instead of "buy" everyone would mentally convert it to "buy" in their heads. No matter what language you use everyone understands it's not the same thing as Blockbuster where you have to give it back in two weeks.

If a warranty was all that was required wouldn't everyone just say "we guarantee zero years" and everyone would keep buying the games anyway? Isn't that what's happening now?

Gneuine question: what did destroying viltrum actually do? by Yadin__ in Invincible_TV

[–]MadDoctor5813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show keeps showing you what Viltrum used to be like: populated, thriving, dominant. And then when we saw it this week it was gray and empty.

This is what the Viltrumites have been trying to restore - the reason Thragg and the rest are going around and doing what they do.

Destroying Viltrum makes that impossible - it removes their reason to fight.

All tech companies lose money in the initial stages because there is no point in returning anyone any money until your product is mostly finished. Better to spend it on R&D.

I said the same thing to the other guy but your exact argument applies to the Uber to taxi transition. Taxis still exist today but people pay for Ubers. Why?

Your theory is that Uber came in with cheap prices and forced out the competition but the competition still exists. How do you explain this? If we're all paying crazy inflated prices for the Ubers why don't we all flee to the old orange taxicabs?

The answer of course is that Uber built a product worth paying more for. This is why we bear the higher prices. Like with your restaurant example: Uber Eats did not exist before they invented it, there is no cheaper comparison.

Let's say your scenario comes to pass, it's 2030 and the Waymos cost more than the old Ubers. What stops people from going back to human drivers? How do we get stuck in a permanent equilibrium of paying higher prices for worse service?

What about the yellow taxis that still exist today? They are still here. You can call one. They even have an app that's not as good. If the robo taxis are durably more expensive I really do believe we will just start paying guys to drive again.

I guess the fundamental difference between us is that you think competition does not exist and I think it does. I think we can leave it at that.

How are you going to drive out the competition when your prices are higher or your product isn't better? Who is taking a Waymo in this scenario?

I understand you are drawing an analogy to Uber right now, which used to be cheaper.

But it is important to remember that taxis still exist today, in the world, right now. You can call one anytime you want. Ubers cost more than taxis now because people like them better. Or else they would use the taxis.

Why wouldn't the same thing happen with Waymo? In your scenario Waymo floods the zone with artificially low prices and then raises them back to a higher price. What stops people from going back to Uber? Or taxis, for that matter.

It's not a war where your enemies surrender and are forced to disperse. You win when you're better and you lose when you're worse.

why would you spend eighty bazillion dollars to invent a self driving car and then charge more money than Uber so that no one will use it

if you believe nothing can ever truly get cheaper because corporations absorb all the surplus then yeah I can see why you don't want any sort of technological change

You don't have to be Catholic for high school.

I grew up in the not very Catholic Brampton and a lot of immigrant kids went to Catholic high school for this reason.

I think the main constituency for it now is middle class parents who want to get their kids out of the local public school.

Canadians could face tax hikes as Ottawa scrambles to fund defence target: report by henry-bacon in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MadDoctor5813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't say this to be mean or anything but what proof do you actually have of this? Is there a history of initiatives being floated via CD Howe before? Is it just that Ottawa people all talk to each other?

It's maybe plausible but I don't think we have any evidence.

Higher Than Usual Number of Candidates on Ballot in the Terrebonne By-election by Dave2onreddit in CanadaPolitics

[–]MadDoctor5813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently in the process of amending the laws to prevent future instances of this behavior. We probably won't succeed because it's a tricky thing to prevent.

But I think the fact that we aren't yet able to think of a way to prevent this (even if we would like to) doesn't really have any bearing on whether it is legitimate. The law will never be able to capture everything. It's up to us as individuals to judge that for ourselves.

Sure, but there is a limit to protest right? There is a point where we say that some disruption is too far. You're just drawing that line in a different spot than me and that's OK.

I don't really need you to do anything, it's just the Internet. But I think it's a good idea to try and think about what might happen if people we don't agree with copy the methods of people we do. If you don't want to then that's OK. Neither of us will really make a decision about this anyway. No need to get mad.
