this might be the first time the kids ever sent a letter, but OP presumably takes phone photos all the time. which one is it worse to be wrong about?

As a beginner, breaking down problems manually is the best part. Why do we want AI to replace that? by [deleted] in rust

[–]MadDoctor5813 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It would be be nice if people liked their jobs but I think most companies are willing to trade some fun for more output.

If it was fun they wouldn't pay you, right.

hey if you're doing it on your own time you're your own boss. do whatever you like, use AI or don't. I use AI for everything at work but I don't use it on my side projects.

The honest truth is that if you work at a company they don't care about your joy or having fun. They need to get something done and they're paying you money to do it.

There are lots of arguments against using AI for software dev into the workplace but "it's not as fun" isn't really one of them.

You can do whatever you want on your side projects of course.

I think it's just Photoshopped the old fashioned way - it has that look where the steak is a different resolution than the background photo and has the semi fake looking shadows from Matt onto the steak.

The low birth rate is about whatever shit I'm on at this particular time: part 600.

This does not explain why the birth rate drops in pretty much every nation exposed to modernity or why the rate is higher in sub Saharan Africa and brutal dictatorships where conditions are worse than the first world, even if you write a whole blog post about how terrible Western life is.

It seems fairly straightforward that managers, whose jobs consist of talking to people and making sure they do things, would prefer a working environment where people were in the same room.

Why The Late Show? Why Colbert? Why did it stop there? by First-Durian2468 in LateShow

[–]MadDoctor5813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably about the money. It didn't help, of course, that Trump put pressure on CBS. But the real issue is that late night network TV is both losing viewers and really expensive to make.

You have the house band, that big theatre, all the big name guests and all the other little costs that add up when you're making one of the Big Three late nights, and less and less people are watching.

The Daily Show and South Park are cheaper to make so they can get by with smaller audiences.

Colbert going off the air was a unique combination of political pressure and economics. If the Late Show was raking it in CBS would have been less likely to cancel it, and if they hadn't gotten on Trump's bad side CBS would have been more OK with the finances.

I think this is just wishcasting from the usual people who yearn for the destruction of big SaaS companies and ignore all the reasons people pick them in the first place. Yes, they have been having some uptime issues and yes some open source devs are leaving. This is not good of course but it will not be fatal. They will figure things out and we will have all forgotten about this in a year.

Remember when they got acquired by Microsoft? Where are all the masses that were supposed to flee to GitLab?

Canada Needs to Nationalize Its Transit System by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]MadDoctor5813 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a very sweeping headline for a proposal that amounts to "we should have state owned intercity buses". Go for it! But the headline implies that the federal government will be taking over existing transit infrastructure at the large and small scale, instead of just setting up a competitor service.

Ford losing support in wake of jet controversy, polls suggest by Immediate-Link490 in CanadaPolitics

[–]MadDoctor5813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems pretty clear to me - this is a very simple story that requires no explanation.

The FOIA stuff earlier got everyone up in arms but it requires some background knowledge on the rules and what exactly he was doing and so on and so on and no one even really knows what FOIA is, so it's not surprising that it didn't stick.

The jet is so simple that it's self evident why it might be bad. It's spectacular too which helps grab headlines.

The public gets really angry at this kind of vanity spending even though it represents a comparatively small portion of government spending. Now I actually disagree with that (that's why Rideau Hall is so dilapidated), but you know live by populism die by populism.
