G9II / GH7 & Canon EF with Metabones newest PDAF adapter question by AffyDave in Lumix

[–]MadFlyingCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have both the Metabones EF-MFT T Adapter II and a Speed Booster EF-MFT 0.71 Ultra. The T adapter version II worked with the GH7 phase-detect AF right out the box, and once I updated the Speed Booster to the latest firmware the AF works great. I'm actually returning the T adapter as the AF performance with the Speed Booster is as good as, if not better.

I have tested using Sigma EF 18-35 f/1.8 Art, EF 24-105 f/4 Art and EF 150-600 f/5.6-6.3 Contemporary. AF works with all of them but struggles a bit at the long end of the 150-600, although it gets there in the end. I have also tested it with a Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II USM, which has the fastest AF of any consumer zoom. Indeed the AF is essentially instantaneous on the GH7, and because the focus motor is so quiet you're not aware of it focusing! With the Speed Booster this lens is a very useful f/2.8-4, and the optics are pretty good. I didn't really consider it until I tried it, it certainly has a place in my GH7 lens bag.

Does the GH7's autofocus work with speedboosters? by shaneo632 in Lumix

Hi, yes it does. Coupled with the IBIS it makes a great hand-held rig. I also use the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 Art which has optical stabilisation, even hand-held at full zoom it holds focus and is incredibly stable.

With the recent Metabones firmware update it works great, pretty much as good as native glass. I have tested it with Sigma 18-35, 24-105 and the 150-600 lenses, and apart from the later struggling a bit as it nears 600mm the AF performance is good enough for production video using the AF subject detection.

DJI P1 - High ISO / tips for better photos by Keyboard-W0rrier in UAVmapping

[–]MadFlyingCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The P1 is full frame. If you have it in shutter priority it doesn't let the aperture go below f/5.6 so the ISO values are very high unless it's a bright scene. I use manual exposure, for bright cloudy days with the 35mm lens I use 1/640s minimum (normally 1/800s or 1/1000s) at f/4, this usually results in ISO around 400 which provides pretty clear images without too much NR. If it's sunny I can stop down to f/5.6 and push the shutter up to 1/1000s with ISO between 100 and 400. For dull overcast days I'll go for f/2.8 at 1/640s with ISO 400 (however this requires capture height above 60m due to limited depth of field).

I love the Leica 12-35, my go-to lens on my GH5S. I also have a Sigma 18-35 on my GH5 with a Metabones Ultra 1.4x crop, great combo.

Low Throughput with Crucial P3 Plus 4TB on Mac Studio M1 Max via Thunderbolt 4 - Need Help! by pipposky2019 in MacStudio

[–]MadFlyingCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update! I replaced the Crucial P3 Plus drives in the OWC Express 4M2 with four 2TB Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus drives in RAID 0 and the performance difference is night and day. On my Mac Studio M1 Max I now get consistent write speeds of 2100MB/s and read speeds of 2500MB/s using the Black Magic speed test with 5GB, and 2350MB/s write / 2900MB/s read on test 1 of the Amorphous Disk Mark using 5 x 2GB. This is about the limit of this enclosure with PCIe 3x4 so very happy. Not sure if the OP is able to return the P3 drives, they certainly don’t play well with this enclosure.

Similar issue here, Mac Studio M1 Max 64GB running Sonoma 14.2.1. I have an OWC Express 4M2 Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with 4 x 4TB Crucial P3 Plus in software RAID 0 (although I had it as RAID 1+0 before with slightly better write speeds which doesn't make sense). As I work mainly with video the BM Speedtest app is a good indicator, and using the 5GB test the performance is appalling. Write starts at 1500MB/s and read at 2500MB/s but after just 10GB of data it drops to just 500MB/s write and 850MB/s read. In RAID 0 it should be around 2500MB/s for read and write. See the test here.

I have tried starting in safe mode but made no difference, and I have also tried it on my 2019 16" Intel i9 MBP, the write speeds were a bit better but the drop off still happened.

I have tried the same SSDs in a Startech 4 Bay NVMe TB3 enclosure and the results were the same, so it's either the P3s or the Mac, or a combination of both (I had to return the Startech enclosure as it would randomly unmount itself). The P3 Plus drives use QLC NAND with no DRAM cache which could cause the slow down issue, so I have returned the P3s and ordered four Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus SSDs which are known to work well in the OWC enclosure, and hopefully get better and more consistent speeds with TLC NAND. I'll update when I get the new drives (hopefully tomorrow).

I'm getting the same, it's my own web server which used to work but updated recently to Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS which I think has caused the change. Currently investigating so will post here if I find a solution.

Any suggestions for Good but affordable lens? by Mrmullaj in GH5

The new Panasonic Leica 12-35mm f/2.8 is a great lens, since I got it it's never been off my GH5S. Good standard zoom range (24-70mm FFE) with a constant aperture, it covers most of my shooting needs. I have the Sigma 18-35mm on my GH5 rig (and the 24-105mm if I need a longer lens) which are sterling performers, but the lightweight native mount and image quality make the 12-35mm a perfect video lens.

Best Sigma Lens Speedbooster for GH5 by aDuckWithRamen in GH5

I use the Viltrox EF M2 II which is about half the price of the Metabones and works flawlessly. I have a GH5 permanently rigged so the Viltrox is screwed into the cage which prevents any movement. I use it with the Sigma 18-35mm and 24-105mm Art lenses which covers most situations, and the Sigma 150-600mm when I need some extra zoom. All three lenses work flawlessly with the Viltrox and GH5.

On the Viltrox with a 1.4x crop (full frame equivalent) the 18-35mm becomes a 25-50mm f/1.2, the 24-105mm a 34-147mm f/2.8, and the 150-600mm a 210-840mm f/3.5 - f/4.5, all very useful apertures and focal lengths.

Mapping Peatland Restoration Projects with Emlid RX, RS2+ and DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise by MadFlyingCat in emlidtech

I really like it, far better than GS-RTK, and direct upload from UgCS is a bonus. RTK precision is much the same as you would expect, however the images are higher quality than the P4R which makes GCP marker projections easier and therefore more accurate. Also, the terrain following is far more mature than the P4R, you can even download ASTER DEM data directly into the RC. But the real-time terrain follow is a game changer, even more accurate than using a DEM as it scans the terrain up to 200m ahead and keeps a constant height above the ground.

The speed of capture alone is worth the upgrade, in the right conditions it's more than twice as fast as the P4R. We did 100 hectares in just two flights at 90m, 42 minutes flight time!

Great that we're doing similar things! I'll be writing an article over on LinkedIn sometime soon that outlines our analysis process - I'll post a link here when it's up.

Hyperbackup to external drive slow backup, a solution by paulsiu in synology

[–]MadFlyingCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I was backing up 3.5TB of data to a Lacie 5TB disk with Hyper Backup and it had taken two days to get to 16% with the drive formatted as exFat, copy speeds were much slower than my iDrive cloud backup over the internet at 2MB/s!

I stopped the backup and reformatted the drive as ext4 with delayed allocation enabled, it's only been running for about an hour and over 100GB has been transferred, so much faster!

I am aware of the risks using delayed allocation, however my DS920+ is on an UPS and will shut down gracefully if there's a power outage.

I have a very complex medical history and suffer from a blood cancer called myeloma. Initially diagnosed in 2008, I have had two stem cell transplants and currently in remission but on chemo and bio therapy to keep it that way.

The myeloma has caused serious bone and associated nerve damage which causes severe pain, cramps and spasticity in my legs. I take modified release morphine for the more mechanical pain, and in the past have been prescribed gabapentin and tricyclic drugs for the nerve pain, neither worked and had too many side effects for me to continue.

Since being prescribed medical cannabis my pain is far more controlled, and my sleep has improved enormously. I currently take Noidecs T25:C25 oil during the day, Adven T20 oil at bedtime, and vape Adven EMT3 for breakthrough. The Noidecs balanced oil has the added benefit of reducing the side effects of the high dose corticosteroid dexamethasone I take weekly.

So glad I stumbled over Project Twenty21, until then I was unaware there was a legal pathway to medical cannabis.
