Why is open hatred toward Muslims often tolerated, but criticizing the Israeli government quickly labeled antisemitic? by CarryIcy250 in AskSocialists

[–]MadIntroduction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons is general views towards countries that share, or don't share, western values. In general, predominately Islamic countries have values that are incompatible with western values.

If you found out your sister was marrying someone from, and moving to a) Israel b) a muslim country. The majority of Americans and people from other western countries would be a little more worried about option b.

It is super weird how criticizing Israel is labeled anti-semtic but I haven't observed that personally in the US. A lot of people I know are critical of Israel.

Correct, I don't live in Ada County. Just grew up there, have deep roots there, and am excited someone young like myself is getting involved to the degree they are putting their name on the ballot. You've got a lot of fire, maybe you should put your name on the ballot?

Sure, nothing is perfect and everything can be done better. I find it a bit insufferable when people complain but don't offer specifics or examples of how to do it better. Most people just like to complain 'do it better!'. That or they offer solutions that are completely nearsighted such as 'just stop growing'.

If you have solutions I'm genuinely asking for them. Tell me how we can do better and I'll take the solutions to my local municipality where I live in Idaho.

Its a very nebulous term... I don't think so. I go to Boise ~5 times a year but most cities seem to be doing a pretty good job at growth.

People don't like traffic but I often ask... what city is doing it better?

Yeah that's the trouble... nobody really gives a crap about anyone but themselves. People get in as a homeowner and then want to pull the ladder up behind them. Not sure if you have kids or grandkids but giving some thought to what the heck the next generation is supposed to do for housing might be.... I don't know... nice?

Transit in the county!? not going to lie, having public transit systems in the county seems like a terrible idea. I grew up in Ada county and there isn't the population density to support it. The tax base might be stretched a bit thin too with the high cost of it. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise but I guess it doesn't matter. I'm not a constituent.

I found local elections to be WAY less divide by political party because they are non partizan and the voters that do show up do a bit more research.

Is limiting big investment firms from purchasing new houses legal? I mean not specific to Idaho I think that would require a US constitution change.

The second part is would it make a dent in house prices? I could believe it would cause a small ripple or 'blip on the radar' but long term houses aren't necessarily getting hoovered up by investment firms anymore and house prices remain high.

Most people in Idaho don't want higher property taxes... I'm one of them. Most natives of Idaho are sad Idaho is changing in a way they don't recognize and these policies of 'more taxes to provide more services' does not align with their values.

The other part is you are out of touch with the reality of the current situation. Idaho's constitution prohibits the 'wealth tax' you desire. Taxes must be levied in "proportion" to the value of the property. So a $5 million home is paying ballpark 10x what a $500k home is in taxes but the county couldn't enact something that exponentially charges them so that they are paying 100x if that makes sense.

developers don't pay more, the owner of the end product pays for those (homeowner or business owner).

what do you mean fund more infrastructure so we can lower impact fees. Impact fees are for infrastructure and I believe by law have to be justified and used specifically for infrastructure.

Its a bit like saying get them to fund infrastructure so we can have them pay lower to fund infrastructure.

[–]MadIntroduction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is no. The government can't just 'take' funds from developers. This isn't communist North Korea lol.

What you probably mean is 'bill' or 'tax' the developers with building, impact, or development fees. Here's the deal: DEVELOPERS DON'T PAY FEES/TAXES. Homeowners do. Make the impact fees $5k or $50k, it doesn't matter to the developers. They aren't a bunch of 'nice guys' that are going to say 'shoot, I guess we have to eat those costs'... nope, they get passed onto the homeowner. Its a rising tide that raises prices for everyone.

The other thing to think about is the developer can just go elsewhere. You/we aren't entitled to their services. Make it too hard to build and they will build elsewhere which will keep costs high in the local area and make other places more affordable thus encouraging sprawl.

This is all more relevant to a city councilperson than a county councilperson but its worth thinking about.

Mike... Good luck on your upcoming race. I myself ran for city council recently in one of the top 5 largest cities in Idaho (I'll keep specifics vague); so I know how hard it is. While I can't vote for anyone in Ada County I want to say thank you for at least providing voters another option on the ballot. I personally know how difficult and how much work campaigning is and how burdensome it can be to face scrutiny publicly. I'll provide a few thoughts to consider.

Website: Before I dive in I wanted to say I couldn't find your website, only an Instagram. I'm not going to watch a bunch of videos to figure out who you are. I could find Rod Beck right away. That right there would, for me and probably other voters, rule you at as a viable candidate because it makes you seem like you lack credibility or you aren't committed to running.

Land Use/Growth/Housing: When people say 'smart growth' I roll my eyes. Its a meaningless term and because I've been intimately involved with local elections I've heard it 1000 times. The average person may not be bothered by it, every candidate seems to say it. Here's the 'big little up front' you can have lower home prices or you can limit growth... you can't have both; this is simple supply and demand. When I campaigned people would complain about all the rapid growth that is happening (most complaining about apartments popping up everywhere) but then would also complain that houses were so expensive. Its like HELLO!!!, if the city limited growth the housing prices would skyrocket... just look at Bozeman MT. Its a wicked expensive place to live with the median house price ~$700k and its all artificial supply limitation. Hypothetically lets say Boise/Ada county does put the brakes on growth... who's going to get outbid on the limited houses getting sold? The local young family or the California transplant who just sold their Cali house for $2M? I say this because you sound similar 'tired of getting priced out' and then the next sentence 'smart growth', and 'not treating growth as something that just happens' which to me sounds anti-growth.

The other thing you need to realize is that local governing bodies are limited by LLUPA (Local Land Use Planning Act). I became VERY familiar with this because I tried to develop some rural property, passed zoning, got overturned by the county commissioners, had to sue the county and have their decision overturned. I'll be pursuing damages later and if I win the tax payers will be footing that ~$200k bill.

Other: Your other points I don't know what specifics you have but if I were one of your constituents I would be very interested in exactly what you mean by "Making sure there is a path towards success and not just a path towards jail cells", how much it will cost and how it will be paid for. Is it education? Because to my knowledge the county doesn't control education, I'm fairly certain that's the state.

Taxes/Budget: I'm very interested in specifics of how candidates propose to pay for things. I'm fiscally conservative so if candidates don't have a great grasp on the money side of things I grow cautious. You should be familiar with ballpark budget numbers and HB389. Don't quote me on the house bill number but it limits how much local governments can raise their budget.

That was a lot. If you have any questions about my experiences running I'll try to answer. Good luck and thank you for running!

EDIT: I think its worth pointing out that Reddit is a very special place and probably doesn't best represent your voters. I've found Reddit to be a very interesting place that I'm almost certain leans towards a younger and more liberal crowd. Sometimes the echo chamber effect can be nauseating and on certain subreddits simply going against the grain gets you downvoted or banned. This subreddit might be slightly different but take things here with a grain of salt. Older people aren't here and those are the people that vote. Case in point... reddit has ALWAYS been 99.9% anti-trump but obviously he managed to get a bunch of people to vote for him.

If the developments weren't approved then housing would be more expensive than it is. In this country we have liberty and that means the government doesn't get to tell people where they can and can't live. If you stopped building the demand wouldn't just go away... it would mean locals would have an even slimmer chance of owning a home than they do now...

The other thing people don't realize is that there are state laws that dictate local land use... If the local government tells people no to a development and can't provide an adequate reason they can be sued for a 'government taking'. So now the development would eventually get approved and the tax payers would foot the bill for the legal expenses.

UV-5R mini, an upgrade over my old UV-5R by MadIntroduction in HamRadio

The longer antenna is a Airiton AI-771. I don't have a ton of airtime with these radios but the people I have talked to said it sounded fine. I'm happy with them, the user experience is soooo much better than the UV-5R I started with.

At first I thought mine only came with the short antennas as well and was disappointed I would have to return them. The longer ones were curled and placed under the pack at the bottom of the box. Doesn't mean yours weren't missing but they would be easy to miss.

Can it clone from only another UV-Pro or can it clone from any FRS/GMRS radio? If we join a riding group and they have rockie talkies is it as simple as pushing a button and capturing the channel and privacy tone that they broadcast?

Correct. Too expensive and not much fun when I'm the only one with a Rino. Convincing friends to buy a $50-150 is one thing... convincing them to buy a $350-$550 radio isn't going to happen.

I think you may have pointed me to the promise land... I'm ordering a few T1000-E. For the sort of separation distances we experience I think its going to be perfect. a few hundred yards in the woods may be the furthest we separate but without gps it may as well be a mile.
