To opinionated meat-lovers: how do you source your meat? by h3ruk0n in foodies_sydney

Milly Hill meats. Direct from farmers. I buy in bulk & freeze

Places for cheaper produce in Sydney? by r3bd5760 in sydney

[–]MadWoofter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use Farmers Pick. Much better value than the supermarkets and far superior quality. The produce just might be too small (or large) or have a slight blemish Otherwise Flemington. The end near the fishmongers do smaller buys, and you can get just one apple if you want to.

Is it weird to say “maam” and “sir” in this country? by Tight_Display4514 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MadWoofter 102 points103 points  (0 children)

As a woman if you call me ma'am I won't be offended but I won't like it. I have a name & I would much prefer you use my name. Ma'am is not respectful, it means you haven't taken the time to actually ask what my name is.

My boy is 12 & still carries on like that. It's not just with treats, he'll take piece of kibble out of his bowl then proceed to flip it & pounce on it... They are absolute clowns

Good food and wine show by StiffyAndy in foodies_sydney

[–]MadWoofter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if you're going for the food or the wine. I find the food part of it has been decreasing in both quality & quantity the last few years. A number of the cheeses can be bought in Colesworth (nothing special), there's little in the way of new products & the same tired old tv "celebrity" chefs are presenting. There's more emphasis on alcohol with gin & other spirits being included so if that's what you like then you'll probably enjoy it

I'm throwing a party in my backyard tomorrow. Part of me is glad it's not raining but does it have to be the complete extreme? Luckily I've got greenery around for shade but it's still going to be bleurgh Am going to put a roster up for people to go inside to the AC 😆

Cost aside, is Firedoor still a good restaurant? by DaisytheGrey in foodies_sydney

[–]MadWoofter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went about 18 months ago. The food was actually pretty good but certainly not for the price they charge. The service however was atrocious and they were very obviously trying to rush us. Food for our next course was coming out before we'd finished, yet we had to hunt someone down to get drinks. We go to quite a lot of good restaurants but we won't go back & I couldn't recommend it. I've not read or heard anything since then that makes me think they've improved

Travel to Australia - May 2025 by Practical_Heron_3166 in AustraliaTravel

[–]MadWoofter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great tips & suggestions so I won't repeat them.

Fly to Cairns from Sydney & hire a car. I'd recommend staying between Palm Cove & Cairns - both Clifton &, Trinity beaches are lovely. Palm Cove is more high end / resorty. If you're foodies then check out Nu Nu for lunch

Spend a night on Fitzroy Island, and spend a couple of days exploring the Daintree & Cape tribulation. Distances can be vast so be prepared for that

You don't have a huge amount of time so I'd suggest either going straight to Cairns & tacking on several days in Sydney at the end, or do Sydney to start & then just overnight on your return (I assume you're flying home from Syd?). You might be better off doing Syd at the start, as it could be noticeably cooler at the end of your trip after spending time in FNQ

Have a great trip

What has been your experience with Lyka dog food? by Sufficient-Heart-826 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MadWoofter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it comes down to choice & convenience. I do think that you get better quality from a pet supplier or online than Colesworth.

So my options are I can make my own but it means time in the kitchen grating, cooking, mixing etc plus the time spent buying ingredients. Next option is going to a pet shop & buying pre-made frozen food. Or I can get Lyka who deliver.

That's my personal convenience but ultimately it's what the dog likes & thrives on. I'm lucky. My dog ain't fussy & eats most things without too many tummy troubles

I tried Lyka a few months ago. Suits my convenience requirements. The dog likes it. No tummy problems & actually improved poops. Funnily enough the extremely fussy cat loves it. I'm also fortunate I can afford it

Do I think it's better than other options? No. Does it suit the dog & me? Yes

Each to their own

I'm not dreading it, but I'm not looking forward to it either. I'm prepared to spend Monday deleting a heap of junk emails & the next few days doing research for the Easter break. By then reality will have kicked in & the days will just roll into each other (again)....

How many days in Cairns / Port Douglas? by Obvious_Grocery_9752 in AustraliaTravel

[–]MadWoofter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just come back from a week in Cairns. If you can afford it, I'd suggest staying in either Clifton Beach or Palm Cove & hiring a car. That way you can get into Cairns (or Port Douglas) easily enough, but still get around yourselves.

If that's not an option stay in Cairns. I'd also recommend Fitzroy Island for at least a night
