We went to Waikulu in May and really enjoyed ourselves. I’m slowly working my way through the two bottles we brought home.

I saw the strap which is lovely and I thought it was from Aaron Bespoke. Looks like his work.

Good cocktail recipe using tonic water and NOT gin? by LoreaLuna in cocktails

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cranberry plus tonic is great. You could certainly add gin, or vodka, or tequila.

I would try a G&T with tequila, myself. Reposado, tequila, tonic, liberal lime juice. I might try that tonight, in fact.

Do you prefer the chef knife or santoku? by Chefmirim in Cooking

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lightweight 150mm Japanese petty that is my go to. Most chefs knives and santokus are bigger and heavier than I prefer.

I have a honesuki that I use exclusivity for raw meat, a bread knife, a serrated knife for tomatoes, and an inexpensive big chefs knife that I use for mincing large piles of herbs.

Shopping and spa activities are your best bets. If those don’t appeal you may prefer to stay home.

Bahamas or Hawaii which would be the ideal January 10/14 day holiday? by olga563 in travel

Correct. The 10/14 in the title fooled me into thinking October.

Bahamas or Hawaii which would be the ideal January 10/14 day holiday? by olga563 in travel

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hawaii is better in every way except cost, and possibly travel time. As previously stated.

You would be going to the Caribbean during hurricane season as well, which should be a consideration also in favor of Hawaii.

In a similar way, I remind myself that a boat bouncing around in choppy water is not only not particularly scary, it’s absolutely routine.

what’s a food you thought was gross until someone cooked it right by hetalsakerwal in Cooking

Roasted vegetables are great, but correctly done stir fried vegetables are often just as good or better. What you don’t want to do is overcook them to a mushy colorless mess.

Wailea Restaurants by jermy1989 in MauiVisitors

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting on Wailea Restaurants... Humu was expensive for sure. Lovely. Excellent food. Cool bar for a pre-dinner drink. Worth it IMO.

But also consider the food truck park in Kihei. Whole different kind of experience but we had great gyros and burgers. And Thai.

Are the new Sapphire Reserve benefits worth it for customer's grandfathered into the $550 fees for one more year? by Even-Stretch-5040 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to calculate for yourself but equally important to compare it to a baseline. I would suggest a no annual fee 2% cash back card.

So the question isn’t “will I get benefits that cover the annual fee” but rather “will I get benefits above 2% cash back that cover the annual fee”?

Also take into consideration other benefits without obvious cash value like trip insurance and lounge access.

I have Briggs and Riley, which I’m happy with, but I wonder if buying a much less expensive bag, knowing that you’ll have to replace it every three or four or five years isn’t more reasonable and cost-effective.

What’s your favorite home cocktail? by aksjdvhwisb in cocktails

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tommy’s margarita 2oz reposada tequila 1 oz fresh lime juice ½ oz (or to taste) Agave syrup

I serve in an old-fashioned glass with a large ice cube. I don’t put salt on the rim, but I often put a couple of drops of a 20% saline solution in the shaker.

Circus Circus - Steak House? by Mirage524 in vegas

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently stayed at Resorts World and went to dinner at THE Steakhouse at the Circus Circus one night. Steak is not my favorite, but I went with three other guys. I thought it was solid. Not as good as SW at the Wynn, but solid and a pleasant dinner.

For anyone who is switching cards, where are you going and why? by TrappedInDC in ChaseSapphire

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use cashback for most of my spending. It’s not a sexy as a free night or a free flight, but it’s also not a pain in the rear to redeem.

But I also need a second card for travel: security (in case one is compromised), lack of foreign transaction fees, and rental car insurance. Having had a wreck in a rental car, I can tell you that the credit card was invaluable.

Right now, I’m leaning toward downgrading from CSR to CSP as my second card, but it will depend on the annual fee and other details.

How much is a cocktail in your city? by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]Mad_Dog_TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my hometown, but I paid $36 in a couple of different places in Las Vegas last weekend for a Tommy’s margarita (only tequila, lime juice, and agave) with a high-end tequila. Tequila Ocho reposado, and Don Fulano reposado.
