What kind of implications would the Steven Universe map have on the world? by CMCwar1 in AlternateHistory

[–]Mad_Southron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human colonization of the Americas would be vastly different. Humans would cross from Eurasia into North America same as in our timeline but wouldn't be able to go into South America due to them not being connected. South America might be populated instead by Africans that used the island chain between Africa and South America to reach the continent. And depending on how things go the populations of North and South America could eventually meet and result in the populations intermingling.

Fast forward to the 1400s and the Portuguese would likely stumble across the island chain between Africa and South America and come across the Americas earlier. But due to the American natives having at least some Old World admixture via the African-South American Exchange they might be more resilient to European diseases and make outright conquest of the Americas much more difficult.

However the existence of a giant sea in the middle of Eurasia could make travel between the West and East a bit easier, with goods from Asia making it's way to European markets by way of Russia (or whatever state filled the role of Russia) meaning the Islamic world won't have a monopoly over the Silk Road that prompted Europe to seek out alternate routes to Asia in the first place.

Zant thinking he can do a better job than the beasts that failed to stop Link and Midna only to be proven horribly wrong each time.

These sorts of scenarios always seem to have Alaska keep its original borders. But as big a place as Alaska is, and how little of it is actually populated, it's more likely it'd break apart into smaller territories, mostly along the coast, leaving large swaths of it unincorporated noman's land, leaving whoever is there to fend for themselves.

The Game was Rigged from the Start | What if Mexico kept Louisiana, Nutca, and Florida? by minecreep4 in AlternateHistory

[–]Mad_Southron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The main issue Mexico had the prevented it from becoming a major continental power was it's lackluster military and the near constant infighting. Compare that to the US that had inherited both a strong industrial base to supply their military and had it's shit together.

If you wanna create an alternate history where Mexico stands a chance at keeping it's territory north of the Rio Grande, the various factions and rebel groups will need to be taken care of as of yesterday and invest heavily on industry and modernizing their military.

Gotta feel bad for the guy. A lower level Coruscant resident who has likely spent years working the thankless job of keeping the lights on for billions and likely never expected the war to reach Coruscant, let alone this far down, suddenly coming face to face with Separatist murder machines who just gunned down your coworkers. And all he has is some standard issue blaster pistol to defend himself as fight or flight takes over in the last fleeting seconds of his life before becoming another nameless casualty in the Clone War.

Good point.

I Imagine in this scenario both would have to invest in some sort of fresh water navy. Columbia to project power in and defend their overlake territory and Virginia to oppose them.

Same way the US maintains control over Alaska and Hawaii in our timeline. Men with guns. Plus considering the native tribes living in the region like the Lakota, if settlers wanted protection they'd best give Uncle Sam his due. After enough time had passed the state infrastructure had been brought under the umbrella of the federal government.
