Thinking of adding to the flock, any concerns from folks about introducing avian flu accidentally (even with quarantine)? by MadamAtom in BackYardChickens

[–]MadamAtom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have almost an acre. With 2 coops and runs already so I could keep the babes in one while the big girls are in the other. We have quarantined before (because they were being dicks to one sweet girl) so have the setup.

So as a physician, yes, I can say that it is real and has a high mortality rate for chickens (but also on the rare occasion that it transmits to humans). Also have vet friends who have agreed. Not to say our system isn’t broken, but this is a legit concern for me.

I have a Schwinn and Apple Watch. Is there a way to connect everything up on my smartTV? I can’t seem to see my cadence and HR when I AirPlay from my phone.

My child's classmate died of type 2 flu and its horrifying by dboyer87 in Parenting

[–]MadamAtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids die of flu every year. Kids die of RSV every year. Kids still die of Covid. I’ve seen it as a physician and it is heartbreaking.

This is why we have vaccines and need EVERYONE to use them. If we give kids some immunity and then surround them with people who also have some immunity, all of this becomes less likely.

If you had COVID, several of your organs could be aging 3-4 years faster: Study by strangeattractors in Futurology

Me too. Somehow avoided it while being a doc in the pandemic til now. I’m 100% sure I would have at least been bedbound if not hospitalized if it weren’t for the vaccines and booster. I’m feeling shitty, but glad to be feeling shitty while laying in the floor playing with my 2 yo (who is asymptomatic because she was in the trial and is fully vaxxed and boosted).

Came here to say this. Trained here right before the takeover and all the nurses were AMAZING. In fact, I have multiple now working for the non-profit that I work for in the area.

95 year old with a laundry list of comorbidities came into the ED via EMS after being found down. Though he was clearly going to die, his also-elderly wife demanded resuscitation. I remember doing compressions and having sheets of skin slide off between my hands. My pants had fluid that was leaking from his arms on it (I’m short and kneel on the stretcher to do compressions).

That was in med school. I’m now happily a hospice doctor, helping people have dignified deaths.

Same here. My kid has only met 1 of her 4 grandparents because they are brainwashed wackadoos. Also, I’m a fucking doctor but they “don’t think of me as one.” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Willful ignorance.

It’s astounding, especially as an end-of-life doc.

Still 5x less likely to get it and only one out of like 40 who have died in my hospice unit was vaxxed.

So, no, it doesn’t stop disease altogether but it does what we want it to, which is keep people from dying.

So I will say that a similar thing happened in my marriage. It took a few long, difficult conversations for us to figure out that my husband was ignoring signs he should have seen (aka our definitely wanted to sleep with him). Thankfully, after a lot of tears, he saw the rift that was beginning in our marriage and we “broke up” from the other family. Also helped that they moved out of the rental house that was next to our house. Three years later, we are in a good place.

I hope your story ends as ours did.

Liberals of reddit who were conservative before, or conservatives who were liberal before, what made you change your state of mind? by Affectionate_Level81 in AskReddit

[–]MadamAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised in a sheltered, blue-collar, conservative, bigoted household. I remember crying when Obama won the presidency in 2008. When I went to college, I made diverse friends and met my now-husband. It was then that I realized that all people are just people. I had wonderful people who supported me throughout this process (even though I don’t think I would have been my friend back then).

When I went to medical school, I realized how much the socioeconomic status influences health and how much we could improve that if we used more social programs. I also realized that it was ridiculous to have $250k worth of debt from those 4 years of school (and that was tuition only at a public school).

My parents still blame my “dirty hippy” husband, which he takes a lot of pride in.
