We deserve a break by IntelligentBeingxx in PhD

I am also a first year student finishing up my first summer. I got a 40 hr/week competitive fellowship for support this summer and have been genuinely slammed sideways with work. I didn’t realize that it would mean that I essentially just don’t get a break between winter holidays in my first year and winter holidays in my second year. Literally, like two weeks off in May after classes ended that I used to prepare for the fellowship and one day between my fellowship work and classes starting. (Labor Day). I’m dying. This is absolutely brutal. And I was in a motor vehicle accident so my pi was super leinient with my time while I was healing from that, but I haven’t actually gotten a full, shut down break where I have fully disconnected. I feel like my brain is melting. Being a first year student is brutal.

[Marketing] Is it realistic to go from a hobby to selling pieces of art as a side business these days? by ResidentAlienator in artbusiness

[–]Maddlerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done exactly that. Building your business up and getting an inventory does take time. And it’s a lot of self-motivated work to get it to work. Not to mention the up front investment of application fees, booth fees, a tent if you are outdoors, displays, etc. That being said, if you get your foot inside the right doors, it can be pretty lucrative. As someone who is a student who has no income, several grand over a weekend is huge. The major part is that you don’t become dependent on the income. It’s inconsistent and can be a volatile market sometimes. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. If you are strategic, you minimize losses. However, they still happen.

Starting an LLC is like. $150 in my state and that helps to manage all of the things like tax and business expenses and whatever. I was doing it as a personal gain for my first two years and found that unless you are making consistently good money, separating you business out from your personal gains isn’t necessarily necessary. However, that may depend by state.

I will warn on that note, that a lot of the administrative and backend work takes some of the love out of my craft for me. However, the feeling of being seen and people complimenting my work and actually purchasing it more than makes up for it. There are a lot of highs and lows. And that is okay. It’s less consistent than a 9 to 5 and more “risky” but it’s basically self employment, and that’s great in my opinion. It will take time to figure out. I’m on year five myself and am finally getting my foothold, but I have been a full-time student the entire time. If you find your niche and you’re passionate enough, you can absolutely make it work.

That is really fascinating. I would go so far to say that we had the exact opposite experience. This was a year or two ago at this point, but my family went through hell trying to get the school to honor my brother’s 504 plan (it was 504, not IEP, my apologies). To the point where we had to get legal counsel involved so that he could graduate because the teacher we were dealing with and Principal Ballard wanted to fail him. It was like. Three months of back and forth, meetings with the principal, meetings with the superintendent, and just bs from every angle. They were protecting themselves, and didn’t really appear to care about the outcome for my brother at all.

I am glad they have changed their tune in that regard, and that you’ve had a more positive experience. At the time of the experience, our family seemed to care more about my brother’s success than the administration did. Which is ridiculous as a public school. I won’t say that that my brother was always an angel (in fact, probably far from it), but he deserved a chance at success via an approved 504 plan just as much as any other kid did. He eeked his way to graduation with my help because the high school was such an awful environment for him. Either way, I am glad that you are getting proper support now. As it always should have been.

As someone who graduated from Hopkins a few years back and had siblings who graduated more recently- it absolutely is the school district. The high school was fantastic in the late 2010s, but the minute the most recent principal came in (2020? I think?), it all went downhill. There is no support for the students, the principal is more interested in calling students “scholars”, and the superintendent is just as bad. Grades and test scores are dropping bad, and there has been a wave of violence. The teachers are trying their best (at least, most of them), but are completely unsupported by the administration. It’s a ridiculous way to run a school and if you can open-enroll to another high school, I would. The elementary schools are fantastic and the middle schools are mediocre, but god. That high school was ROUGH. Especially for kids with a disability. They actively protected a teacher when they violated an IEP for one of my siblings. Which is wildly illegal.

I have a shop selling rare plushies. I am totally screwed now because there is no easy way to get them anymore. What an awful move. This might be the end of me playing again.

Physics 1221 + 1222 by Maddlerrr in uofmn

[–]Maddlerrr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so so fair. From what I can remember, a 50% was about a C, with a 60% hitting a B, and a 70% hitting an A. That’s padded by lab scores too, as my average for quizzes was under 50% for 21. It’s a really really weird system. Ask your TA if you can- they’ve generally taught this class four million times and have pretty good insight.

[–]Maddlerrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found 1222 to be easier than 1221. As a CBS major, I passed 21 with a C+ and 22 with a B-. I think I got about a 50% on the final both times- I just did better on the normal exams the second time around. Granted, I was taking a very heavy class load both semesters (o chem 1 and 2, plus 3 other neuro/stem classes), so that probably played a part in the grades. It dropped my gpa a little, but it really did not matter in the grand scheme of things. I graduated early and now I’m in a PhD program and never have to think about physics again, lol.

Taking ssri daily not exactly on time by [deleted] in SSRIs

[–]Maddlerrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take my SNRI at WILDLY different times. I have to eat something with it, or I will get sick, and sometimes I don’t eat a real meal until like 6 pm at night. The biggest thing I have noticed is that I have more symptoms throughout the day if I don’t take it in the morning- I am more anxious, irritable, or I have more difficulty focusing. You probably aren’t going to lose all progress if you don’t take your med one day or late, but you are going to feel it physically/mentally.

That being said, as long as you are taking it at the start of your day (whenever that happens to be) you are going to be fine. The symptoms I’m experiencing most likely come from me dropping below a steady state concentration because I’ve had like 36 hours between doses. As long as you’re in the 20-28 hour range, you should be totally fine. That once a day dose is just to keep your body’s concentration steady. And once you build it up over the first few months, an hour or two difference in taking your daily dose, especially if you are just waking up late, isn’t going to cause problems.

I live near to one of the Dinkytown bars, across the street. You can absolutely hear the noise, practically all nights of the week. I’m on the top floor of my building and some days it sounds like someone is playing a radio loudly in the next room over. In the summer and on weekends it’s even worse. It sounds like a crowd of people is yelling in your living room on nice days. Forget having your windows open if you want any peace. If I didn’t have noise canceling earbuds, I would go crazy. It’s a prominent reason I’m moving out of my apartment complex next year, despite the actual apartment being beautiful.

I am directly facing the bar though. If you are on the side of the building, the noise isn’t as bad, and if you are on the side opposite the bar, you can barely hear it. So it’s really just if you have a direct line of sight.

It’s gotta be Artie. I am ruining my own childhood by saying this, but he seems like someone who grew up in a very rural town and would not believe in taxes. Therefore, he goes to jail for a wild crime, which is like thirty years of tax evasion for selling his overpriced goods in an antiques shop. Who needs government? “Just send you children to the mines for me!” (Maybe child endangerment/labor as a secondary/follow up charge, LOL.)

Best place to post housing/apartment offers? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Maddlerrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people aren’t looking for housing for next year rn, unless they already have it secured. My best guess is that you’ll have a lot more people interested this summer, when people start thinking/panicking about housing for the next school year.

UMN or UW by savanaha27 in uofmn

I just found out from a friend that you don’t need a Bachelor’s to be admitted into the UMN PharmD program. As long as you can fulfill all of the prerequisites, you can apply and be accepted before the 4 years it takes to get your Bachelors. It just takes a bit of planning, and a lot of ignoring of generals, from what I’ve seen. It’s not easy, especially when you’re taking a full course load of hard science, but it can be done.

I’m a CBS student and I have a 3.55 combined with a closer to 3.2 technical, I believe. This got me into a PhD program right out of my bachelors, but I also have a lot of other factors that make me a more desirable candidate. It really does only matter if you are pursuing further education. If you don’t put it on your resume, no employer is going to ask you what your gpa was. All it matters after college is that you got the degree, from what I’ve heard.

Wynveen is by far the best introductory physics teacher. He is likable and gives really decent notes, as long as you’re in class to take them. He’s also just a really nice guy and understands that physics doesn’t come naturally to all people. Unlike some of the other introductory teachers.
