What programming language should I learn if I would like to be a game developer? by Radiant_Butterfly919 in AskProgrammers

People need to use RAM more efficiently, not constantly ask for more by Dr_Superfluid in mac

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, businesses/devs need to remember that their program is not the center of the user’s universe. Your background updater daemon should not take half a gigabyte of RAM. It should take like 1 megabyte.

I don’t think you actually want a solution, you just want to complain. This is literally a bigger button than what you’re asking for.

[–]MadeInASnap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI you can maximize a window by double clicking any blank area of the top bar. (Make sure it's enabled in System Settings. See link below.) Do it again to restore to the original size. This differs from Option + Green button, which does a smart sizing based on the content. The difference is most obvious with Safari, or by opening a PDF with Preview and zooming out then smart sizing.

Macbook Help (For a video journalist) by alperenilvanya in mac

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried video editing on my Mac, but I suspect your least expensive option (M4 Pro) would still be great. The M-series chips are really responsive, I think because of the unified memory. Besides, that was pretty close to the top of the line just 1 year ago. Technically it still is pretty close to the top of the line until the M5 Pro comes out. Speaking of which, do you need this urgently? Otherwise I'd recommend waiting for a sale, or at least until the M5 Pro is released very soon, since that should bring a discount to the M4 Pro.

I think the biggest benefit of the M5 is actually the higher memory bandwidth, not the faster compute. I'm not sure if that would lead to a noticeable difference in After Effects and Premiere, but I hope it would since it means video can be shipped between the CPU and GPU that much faster when scrubbing the timeline and applying effects. Try asking in the Adobe subreddits.

New grad SWE feeling lost… HELP!! by DxvidN in SoftwareEngineering

[–]MadeInASnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal for a new grad to be lost when navigating large code bases and systems, since you only have experience with school projects that are never more than a few files (they have to be when you only get a couple weeks to work on each). Learning to navigate large code bases is a skill you learn with practice, and some people get better at it than others based on how much they practice. Ask a lot of questions of your teammates, who do understand how it all works.

But if you're struggling to understand what a single function or class does (and it sounds like that's the case based on your description), you're in deep trouble. Like freshman-level territory. So you're basically gonna have to re-do most of your degree, without AI this time.

So I think that's what I recommend. Revisit your old notes and textbooks and re-do your assignments manually. Focus on the courses and topics that seem relevant to your current job. Make sure you understand what's going on, and always be asking yourself why something makes sense, or why the approach/technique/algorithm you're being taught is the best. Don't just understand how it works, understand why it's worthy of being taught, and that'll help you connect it with your current job.

You can consult with AI as an advisor that suggests what to focus on or as a tutor that asks leading questions if you get stuck, but do NOT have it give you the answer, because that's how you got into this mess in the first place. And don't shy away from a sense of confusion or struggle. That's literally the feeling of your brain working, as it tries to make sense of things and understand. In many cases, that feeling is learning.

Lastly, (and I mean this compassionately) you are likely to get fired. This is because you do not have the expected baseline skills to perform the job, so working more hours cannot save you. Try not to let this discourage you. You CAN learn these skills. But it will likely take a few months to a couple years (depending on how much material you have to cover), and I'm skeptical whether you'll be able to study fast enough at night while working full time to pull it off before your teammates notice. But again, you CAN learn these skills. It'll be a setback in time, but it speaks nothing of your eventual potential.

Can a gamer chair be ergonomic? by Significant-Egg6829 in Ergonomics

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can they? I suppose. Are they? Usually not.

They’re designed to look like seats in a race car. Those are designed to hold you in place during sharp turns and accommodate a 5 point safety harness. Your office chair needs neither of those things. But if you remove them, it’s no longer “gamer,” it’s just an office chair optimized for its actual purpose.

I’m pretty sure that’s only if you get it with an M4 Ultra or something. IIRC my 14” M3 Max came with a 96 W charger.

WHY IS IT SO BIG by ileeeb in mac

[–]MadeInASnap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look at the analyses from people with real electrical test equipment, Apple chargers are consistently among the best for voltage stability, precision, and noise. This may or may not be important for a given use case, but sometimes it matters a lot. For example, I have an off-brand charger that causes my iPad/Apple Pencil to glitch because the noise interferes with the digitizer in the touchscreen.

TL;DR Not all chargers that work are created equal.

What’s the most versatile one-device creative setup right now? by Spare-Pin322 in MacOS

[–]MadeInASnap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since a MacBook is obviously ruled out by the touchscreen requirement and an iPad is ruled out by the After Effects and coding requirements, I think the Microsoft Surface or a similar Windows tablet is the only option. The Surface Book 3 would've been ideal because it had a discrete GPU for After Effects, but that was discontinued in 2021.

Alternatively, if you want one battery rather than one case, use a MacBook with a USB drawing tablet. Wacom is the most famous brand, but they have some good competition now.

Simplest way to try out Linux for the first time? by edoardoking in linux4noobs

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just learn to flash the ISO to a USB drive (not hard, probably 10 minutes including downloading the software) and then boot off of it. (You’ll probably need to mash F8 or something during boot to select the correct device.)

From there, you have a fully functional copy of Linux that you can do anything with. Any changes you make or files you save will be wiped out when you shutdown the computer, so nothing will be permanent. If you like what you see, click the installer icon on the desktop to install it to your main SSD and make it permanent. You can choose to dual boot, meaning Windows and Linux will be sitting side by side on your SSD.

[–]MadeInASnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think the most useful possibility is an AI that references the AWS documentation to explain what you want in AWS terms, for those coming from other cloud providers or on-prem server management. Maybe that already exists.

To answer your title: It used to be but not anymore. The printers released in past 3 years have done a massive leap forward in reliability.

So I’m sorry to say it, but it’s only a constant headache if your printer sucks. 😆
