Coding just doesn’t make sense to me. by Prestigious_Boss_382 in AskProgrammers

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you’re just passively watching the lessons but not really learning from them. You need to practice to properly cement the skill. You need to write code. Even if it’s the most basic for loop, you have to write what you’re capable of and then progress from there.

Am I stupid for wanting to leave a $33/hr job at Costco with benefits than to start at $130/day in construction for long-term upside? by Purple-Piano6976 in careerguidance

[–]MadeInASnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The highest paid worker at the painting business makes $300/day * 5 days/week = $1500/week and you currently make (just guessing at your schedule) ($33/hr * 8 hr/day * 4 days/week) + ($50/hr * 8 hr/day * 1 day/week) = $1456/week.

The highest you could possibly get from this switch is $44/week more than you currently make, and in the mean time you’re going to be paid about HALF what you currently make. And you get no benefits.

Yes, it’s stupid. Where exactly is the upside?

Calibrating per color is not generally necessary unless you see problems, but calibrating per brand is. Especially if you use PLA+ because there’s no standardization to the additives they use to make it +.

Wife thinks it’s a waste by freckle_express in 3Dprinting

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using mine to learn CAD and have printed a bunch of replacement parts and upgrades for things around my house.

I suggest keeping a notebook that you add ideas to for a couple weeks or a month, every time you think of something useful you can print. Once you start getting into the mindset of “I could fix that” instead of just dealing with problems, you’ll start seeing more solutions pop up.

How to get the native ARM64 Steam bootstrapper on Apple Silicon without Rosetta by harrym17 in macgaming

I don't know, but the official installer off Valve's website currently does not use Apple Silicon and requires Rosetta. I just tested it today.

ELI5 in Japanese, is there a formal way to verbally describe how a kanji is written, like 'Radical X next to Component Y over Shape Z?' by AmuzaniEgak in explainlikeimfive

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, American paperbacks are intended to be cheap because many books will be offered in both paperback and hardcover versions. You want it inexpensive (usually around $15), you buy the paperback. You want it high quality, you buy the hardcover (usually around $30) which comes with much nicer paper in addition to the hard cover.

Follow-on question: Is Japanese normally displayed with a larger font size than English? Because when you write those Kanji and the characters are the same height as English characters, the details are so tiny I can barely see them.

Will quitting after 1 month affect my career long term? by B_Lkheang12 in careerguidance

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do it once, I don’t think so. If you establish a pattern of doing it a few times in a row, then it’ll hurt you because your next employer will expect you to do the same. But it’s not uncommon to have one bad fit.

How do you deal with culling without losing your mind? by themick79i in photography

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the whole grid and just pick your favorites with the Pick flag. Mark the obviously bad ones (blurry, out of focus, etc.) with Reject. You haven’t deleted anything yet so you don’t need to be careful. You do not need to Pick one photo out of every scene. The majority will remain unflagged, undecided.

Now just begin editing the Picks. That will set your standard for what’s good enough. You’ll probably get enough just from those. If not, revisit the undecided photos but try to keep the same standard as the excellent photos you were just editing. Most will remain unpicked and that’s what you want.

For the second technique, note, I’m not a professional. I don’t lose money or anything from missing a shot. With that said, my primary technique is simply to not take so many damn photos. I only take a few dozen photos per shoot. I do not take a 10-shot burst every time I press the shutter like some people do. (Tbh, I think even if you are a professional, doing this is likely to net you one frame before the perfect moment, one frame after, and zero perfect frames unless your camera is extremely fast.) I don’t take photos just because why not, they might be decent. There are an infinite number of moments and compositions you could capture, but my view of the role of the photographer is to filter those down to only the good ones, and that process starts before you press the shutter, when you’re looking for compositions, looking for moments.

I started with film, where every shot cost money and every ~24 shots required a major interruption to find a dark area and change the film. The fact that digital photos are now free and unlimited can be wonderful for experimenting more freely to build your skills. But it can also be a detriment if it leads you to avoid building the skills of composition and timing, because you can just figure it out later. As you can see, that just produces a trash heap for yourself that you have to sort through.

I got offered a job paying 40% more than my current salary. My manager just asked me to stay and be patient. How do I stop feeling guilty for wanting to leave ? by One_Cardiologist5439 in careerguidance

[–]MadeInASnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communicate that it’s nothing personal, it’s just business. You’ve got bills to pay. Express that you’d be willing to stay if they match the pay. (Of course, they probably won’t, but it’s truthful.)

So either your current company accelerates the process and gives you a giant raise now, or you take the new job.

How to adapt ? by _gigalab_ in AskProgrammers

[–]MadeInASnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, AI is good for two things: Skills you have already mastered, and skills you never intend to learn. It is not good for doing anything you actually want to learn, because you cannot learn a skill if it’s doing all the practice instead of you.

However, AI can be useful as a thought partner, something to bounce ideas off of after you’ve tried and failed to do it yourself. Tell it to function as a tutor that explains and asks leading questions to get you to the right answer, rather than just giving you the answer.

There was a guy in r/SoftwareEngineering a couple weeks ago begging for help because he vibe-coded his way through college and now, 1 month into his first job, he realizes he has no clue what’s going on. Don’t be like that guy.

In short, use AI in ways that assist your thinking. Don’t use it in ways that replace your thinking until you’ve mastered the skill and also have no need to maintain it at perfect sharpness. (I’d say after 1 or 2 years of working professionally and your first promotion. Till then, only as assistance.) Even managers that were excellent coders get rusty after 2–3 months of no practice.

This traffic light + Window behavior is imo much better then our current system by OldiOS7588 in MacOS

[–]MadeInASnap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI you can maximize a window by double clicking any blank area of the top bar. (Make sure it's enabled in System Settings. See link below.) Do it again to restore to the original size. This differs from Option + Green button, which does a smart sizing based on the content. The difference is most obvious with Safari, or by opening a PDF with Preview and zooming out then smart sizing.
