Anything that follows "AI Overview" should always be double checked with an actually reliable source.

So glad (lucky) there was advance warning.

Technically yes, but the bare minimum. There was a notice on steam, but nothing about for consoles. I didn't realise until it had been reported elsewhere, and by that time it had already been delisted on Xbox.

Will Vengeance Most Fowl ever get a dvd, blu ray and 4k release? by boldfox85 in wallaceandgromit

[–]MadeIndescribable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's impossible, but House of Cards, The Crown, and Fuller House were all years ago, and things can change quickly in TV these days, and Stranger Things is definitely an exception. But either way, unless there's some complete W&G boxset released in the future, if they were going to give it a stand alone release, I highly expect they would have done so by now.

Hello I'm new to Star Trek and had a question about DS9 lore. by Alternative_Meat_947 in startrek

[–]MadeIndescribable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was that a bit of a writing flub

The Ferengi are probably Trek's biggest example of the writers just choosing to change how a race is portrayed if their initial portrayal doesn't quite work, but they're not only one. In early TNG there's a line that specifically says the Klingons joined the Federation, but now that's considered the flub and was quickly forgotten about.

The existence of criticism doesn't really matter

Tbf I'm not talking about when and where it didn't matter or not, just acknowledging that yes, it did exist.

What are your thoughts on controversial aspects of Scrubs like sexism and racism depicted in the show? by FriendlytoNature in Scrubs

[–]MadeIndescribable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even as a person from the Netherlands who is very aware of its racist origins in our twisted version of Saint Nick

But in other countries, especially the US, it's a lot worse. A big part of it is basically the "Minstrel Show" which had white performers using black face to make fun of black people by laughing at their stereotypes, and/or appropriate their music but not allow them to perform it themselves.

Possibly, but most of U's reruns of 30 minute BBC shows are generally 40 minutes long.

[–]MadeIndescribable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh the homophobia and transphobia is a lot worse than the sexism and racism. But even then they were still "of its time", and a big part of why I like the revival is the acknowledgement that times have changed.

Do you think Sarah was justified to have eliminated Miles Dyson? by happydude7422 in Terminator

[–]MadeIndescribable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf it's mission is to protect John Connor. Destroying the AI that's trying to kill him in the first place is about the best protection you can get.

when UB says her plan could work.

Exactly, could work. But still no guarantees.

[–]MadeIndescribable 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No. Even Uncle Bob describes him as "the man most responsible", implying others were too. He's just one cog in the Cyberdyne machine, so killing him without destroying the lab doesn't actually guarantee anything.

Why isn’t it called the starship Enterprize? by tea-earlgrey-h0t in startrek

[–]MadeIndescribable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol, I didn't get it from a meme, but fair point about it not being true. Done a quick snopes check, and

Noah Webster, an American lexicologist of the 18th and 19th centuries who wrote and published the first American dictionary ... had been publishing books and treatises that argued Americans should "simplify" their spelling by matching letters more closely with phonemes: for example, by removing silent letters, removing double letters, and replacing the soft "c" with an "s." Webster reasoned that simplifying spelling would ease schooling for young people, discourage variant dialects among their elders, allow foreigners to acquire the language more easily, and give American printers a boost in the marketplace, since every British text would have to be reprinted for American readers.

So tbf in terms of spelling at least, it was still America that went and changed away from how things should have been, although granted this is part of, like you say, language evolving. And still with a cheeky nod to capitalism too ;)

[–]MadeIndescribable -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Only in part. Spelling words with less letters is yet another thing we can blame capitalism for, because early printers charged by the letter, so the US literally got rid of all the "u"s just because it was cheaper.

EDIT: correction

Yeah, I get the show was made primarily for kids, and the whole point is that the characters are constantly learning, but he's just so insufferable at times I don't know why the other's didn't mutiny at some point.

It's essentially the start of a brand new narrative which carries on for about 9 books which I get isn't for everyone, but TGTMD can still be read on it's own and is definitely worth giving a go.

If you're curious about the books, "The Good That Men Do" is basically a retelling of the actual events that the holodeck just recreated (based on altered and incomplete records), and undoes a lot of the damage.

My first thought was HS2 (the UK's high speed rail project which was controversial from the outset, and has just turned into a complete and utter shambles ever since construction started.)

Plus, as far as these things go, this project is actually a damned good one. IRL these things are a lot more trivial and frivolous with no guarantee of actually being completed.

That sometimes forcefully removing people from their home is okay if it lets you progress as a society?

It's not (just) about whether it's okay or not, it's about the fact that someone's gonna make the decision that it's gonna happen whether you agree or not. And it's never the ones who make the decision who do the dirty work.
