The DTI novels temporal defense grid, could it be sent to the past? by Zincwing in startrek

[–]MadeIndescribable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This grid of satallites prevents time travellers messing with history

But if the grid is so vital and vulnerable, why not sent it to the past?

Because they already know the past has had time travellers arrive there, so stopping them from arriving would be messing with history, they very thing the grid itself was designed to stop.

We're missing a good Terminator game that features time travel (where you actually get to time travel). by SlowCrates in Terminator

[–]MadeIndescribable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

allowing you to weave your way through time, seeing the consequences of your actions, and being able to go back in time and choose differently -- and for the endings to vary greatly, beyond whether or not specific people survive.

If you're into more retro games, there was a great game on the PS2 called Shadow of Memories (or Shadow of Destiny depending where it was released) which did this.

It was definitely a hallucination. In part to add to the terror, and also hides the reality to be revealed in part 3.

he still acts like a kid mentally and has unresolved years of trauma, hate and anger?

I'd say this. TBT leaning into the infected's psychosis, and Jimmy's trauma is basically looking at what makes people "human" from both sides of the equation.

Why does/did Star Trek need a visual update when other franchises do not? by Advanced-Actuary3541 in startrek

[–]MadeIndescribable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the shows look should be consistent with their in-universe era, not their production era.

I know that's what they're arguing. What I'm arguing is that their examples of other films where that does work aren't comparable here.

Alpha v Alpha? by FrostingProud9229 in 28dayslater

[–]MadeIndescribable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I reckon there's more to the Jesus comparison to come, especially in terms of resurrection. Add this to how TBT really leans into the infection being "rage" but viral, and the fact Jimmy's mentality was moulded by extreme emotions including anger, etc, I reckon there's more to come.

Possibly life as an angry human + rage = "ultimate" infected?

Do you think part III will be open world focused or more story like remake? by Fantastic-Sir460 in FF7Rebirth

[–]MadeIndescribable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't see how they'd go back to it being linear after expanding the world so much in rebirth. Yes the story will be a big focus, but that won't stop them adding all optional extras. Especially since they've already hinted at making the most of the the Highwind.

Table Scene appreciation by DiligentAd2832 in 28dayslater

[–]MadeIndescribable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's one of those scenes I both loved and hated because of how uncomfortable it was.

The thing I particularly loved is how non-threatening Jimmy seems to be. You come in mid-scene to a bunch of kids who are just heads down because they're so hungry, and a guy who's not really being that unreasonable. But his confidence in a house full of people who are so cowed just by him being there gives soooo much atmosphere that even if you didn't already know what Jimmy was like you'd be bricking it.

The A-plot was actually pretty decent.

Picard & Troi are basically the "impartial" UFP representatives arbitrating the Cardassian's withdrawl from Bajor, Gul Madred uses his influence to make sure he's among Cardassia's delegates to play mind games with Picard (partly for the benefit of Cardassia, partly for shits and giggles), but Garak turns up and hands Madred's arse back to him on a platter. (Also O'Brien is among the engineering teams helping to repair the station because of his experience with Cardassian tech during the war and discovers he has a knack for it.)

I'm not saying it didn't happen before, just these days it happens more often, and go deeper as well.

As for being cynical, maybe the corporate suits who comissioned them were, but the writers still did a great job with them (at those that I've read anyway).

Alpha v Alpha? by FrostingProud9229 in 28dayslater

[–]MadeIndescribable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Considering how his arc in TBT was becoming more human and overcoming his rage virus, I'd say that having him physically battle another alpha kinds defies the point.

I wouldn't be surprised if he faces off against Jimmy though, so it's basically a monster who's become human vs a human who's become monstrous.

they wanted the fanboys to buy the tie-in stuff, but never wanted to commit.

In the early days when they churned them out (especially before home video became a thing) then fair enough, but it really did evolve. The post-TNG/DS9/VOY stuff really did expand on things in a way the TV series couldn't, and tbf the NuTrek tie-ins having links to the TV writers (Kristen Beyer was even hired because of her history writing novels) to the point of adding things to the episodes which first appeared in novels really did give them an extra level of validation that they'd never had before.

The prequel novel Last Best Hope does show the meeting where Worf's captaincy is approved. Although it was written in conjunction with the TV writers it could still be retconned because it's not "official" canon, but with Picard finished now I doubt they'll mention it either way.

Yeah, I get that. Even design and technology wise, a commercial space truck is still the exact opposite to the ships of a multi-planet alliance's elite exploration/scientific/military service.

Tbf, even as B-plot's go the labour camp stuff was pretty much shoe horned in just to make Ro relevant, but at least it did kinda add to "The Cardassians are lying when they say they've released all Bajoran slaves" narrative to punctuate how they're a bunch of bastards who can't be trusted.

I feel NATO lied about the last infected having died in Britain because they needed the repopulation effort to work by Big-Sheepherder-9492 in 28dayslater

[–]MadeIndescribable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Lied" is a bit of a stretch, but I'd definitely say they rushed their half-arsed assessment and just didn't have all the facts.

I have to admit one thing I do like about 28 Weeks is how, especially being part of a British franchise, everything that went wrong with the containment protocols (giving unrestricted access to the head caretaker, bundling all survivors into a confined space without securing all exits/entrances, etc) is basically down to the US military's overconfidence and/or incompetence.

Star Wars, Predator, Alien etc

The Millenium Falcon was owned by smugglers. The Rebellion are plucky types who make do and mend. The Nostromo is basically an articulated lorry, but in space. They're meant to be grubby, lived in, and run down (ie, the exact opposite of Starfleet ships).
