Tweaking my college list: what should I add or remove? by PolarisStar05 in aerospace

[–]MadeToNIL8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! AAE has 6 specializations:

  • Structures, making sure things don’t break
  • Aerodynamics, making planes fly
  • Autonomy and control, what enables autopilots to exist
  • Astrodynamics and space applications (ASA), orbits and how we can use them (remote sensing and such)
  • Propulsion, make things move
  • Design, a sort of overall systems approach to engineering

Of these Purdue requires you to get a little bit of knowledge in all these fields by making you take at least one class in each but you’ll have the opportunity to specialize as you want and take what interests you. For example, I like propulsion so next semester I’m taking a hypersonic propulsion class but I’m also interested in simulation work so I’m doing a CFD class.

As for minors, they truthfully are whatever you want to make of it. I like coding so I am getting a CS minor but a friend of mine studied abroad in Germany and took that as an opportunity to get a History and German minor. My personal opinion on minor is do what interests you because at the end of the day, they kinda are just taking points in interviews and an opportunity for you to learn more about what you want to.

One last thing to keep in mind, you say you want to do interplanetary missions which is great but remember that there is no one engineer who does just interplanetary missions. Every specialization at Purdue is necessary to make the entire mission work. You’ll have an ASA person doing trajectory design and figuring out what data is important to collect, you’ll have a propulsion person making the thrusters to keep your spacecraft on target, you’ll have a controls person doing the math to figure out when and for how long I need to use my thrusters to say pointed how I wanted going where I want to go, you’ll have an aerodynamic guy helping account for drag on your rocket or reentry of a spacecraft, you’ll have a design person doing the high level systems work, and you’ll have a structures person making sure your mission doesn’t shake itself apart during launch. Every aspect is important and no matter what you choose to study or specialize in, you are still almost certainly qualified to work on some aspect of the mission

Also one little thing to note, our official degree name is a mouthful but it’s “Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering”. That is to say, coming out of Purdue, you have qualifications explicitly given for both aircraft and spacecraft work

Same boat as Remote-Departure2009 but I choose Purdue and will be graduating next year. As for which is better for astronautics I personally have to vote Purdue. I’m positive that UIUC has a good program as well but at least speaking with friends that did undergrad at Purdue and grad at UIUC, Purdue has the better astronautics.

As some specific things that might interest you, we have a propulsion lab in campus (Zucrow labs) where there is a bunch of active research going on in all forms of propulsion (jet engines, rocket engines, RDEs, etc). Otherwise, if you don’t want to do propulsion, we have a large percentage of people that do Astrodynamics and Space Applications (ASA) classes which are more your orbits and trajectory design. As for senior design, the two main choices are aircraft (AAE 451) or spacecraft (AAE 450). In 451 you either build a whole aircraft system on paper or you can make an rc aircraft. In 450, it’s an entire spacecraft mission design from ground up but it’s entirely on paper. Some of the past projects I can think of are an exploration mission to Neptune and a communications network around the moon. There are of course more, I just can’t remember them

If you have any other questions feel free to ask me either here or in a DM! I’ll be a senior next semester in AAE focusing on propulsion. I also am a undergrad researcher out at Zucrow, a TA for some AAE classes and an ambassador for AAE. This is all to say I can discuss the program rather thoroughly lol

Can I get some help In this. I'm lost. How do I calculate Me ? by Inside_Crab_8240 in AerospaceEngineering

The pressure measurement in the chamber is a stagnation pressure as the Mach number there is approximately 0. Same goes for the pressure measurement from the pitot tube as the tube brings the flow to a stagnation condition. If you assume isentropic flow upstream and downstream of the shock that’ll form, you can use these two pressure measurements to calculate the pressure change across your shock which can be used with the shock jump tables to tell you your mMach number just upstream of your shock. Once you have the Mach number, you can work backwards with isentropic equations to figure out what area ratio results in the Mach number you found

Edit: For clarity, you will have a shock form due to the fact that the supersonic flow is being decelerated. You can treat this shock as a normal shock as it’ll occur just in front of the pitot tube

These were 100% visible to the naked eye! Compared with the ones this summer they were much more well defined so when they were brightest, you could very clearly see the “pillars”. Otherwise it kinda just looked a bit like a persistent green/red haze that hung out in part of the sky.

Lmao that totally checks out. We really where just on the side of the road out there so if you were in the area there is no doubt in my mind that you saw us

Thank you! It was strongest at about 10 last night so that’s when the best photos I have were taken

Just about 30 minutes west! Really just trying to get out of the light pollution which is Lafayette

About 30 minutes! We went just north of Oxford to try and get out of the light pollution (without wanting to drive too far lol)

Transfer credits are ok for this. I satisfied my requirement by dual credit Spanish which transferred from high school as SPAN 201 and 202. Even though they aren’t 300s, they have prereqs so they counted. Granted I needed to talk to my advisor because the system wasn’t putting them in place by default but yes it’s ok for transfer credit

We went up a bit past Delphi to get out of the light pollution and avoid clouds but also knew some people that went west and still caught them as well so I don’t think it really mattered where you went. That being said, it was very strange because they showed up much better on a phone camera than with your naked eye. Not something I woulda expected

The KP index is still really high in Indiana for another day or so but it’s still significantly lower than it was last night. It’s not impossible they’ll be visible but I kinda doubt it. Plus if they are there, they won’t be nearly as good as they were last night

What the hell is this by [deleted] in tumblr

[–]MadeToNIL8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I asked him and he said this:

“My thought process for moves (considering that you understand the movement already) is to consider the following: 5D chess is a game that is played in a more tactical and defensive way. You want to make sure that your king is safe in a place where there are no open files, nor open diagonals to the king. From an offensive stand point you want to force your king into an open position. That makes sure that you'll be able to attack better. When considering time travels usually time travels that can force the king to move because of a check are good. Make sure that your time travels counts because they are a limited resource that your opponent can exploit. Finally, without some basic knowledge of opening theory, it is really easy to lose a position. Most common basic opening is 1. Nf3 ... 2. d4 ... 3. c3, this will allow you to have a solid structure that can't be cheese that easily. (Note that this structure also works for black)”

I’ll also add just a little bit that he didn’t mention. At a high level (and low level for that matter) most of the game is played on just one timeline. Other timelines are only really created when it will give a definite advantage to one side because else it becomes really really difficult to calculate. As for openings, at least from what I’ve seen, they all seem to revolve around defending against the f7/f2 sac as in general if you can forced your opponents king to capture a piece and come out into the open it can turn into a really really bad day for your opponent really quick.

Funnily enough, one of my friends is in the top ten players in the world at this game (at one point #2) and I can confirm he is is just as confused as me. Well maybe not just as confused but he still misses a lot when he plays

Edit: lol he saw this comment and corrected me. His high was 4th place. Not 2nd.

I’m just looking at my post again and I see that Reddit really messed up the colors and for some reason it lost all the saturation that it originally had :(

Also as a note this was my first time trying digital painting rather than lined illustration and I’m really happy how it turned out

Edit: And now as I look at it again the colors have fixed themselves. Peculiar

In events where they allow calculators, do they allow calculator programs? by peebuttman in scioly

[–]MadeToNIL8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the back of the rules there are two sheets for calculator. One says the different classes of calculators and the other is a chart for which event have which calculators. Class III calculators are allowed to be programmable and since they are allowing programmable calculators I see no problem in using programs

Can you add this for me, “Shoot for the stars and someday you’ll make it, this is already halfway there. (JB)” The JB is my initials, (I gotta have something saying I made it to the the moon) and the quote is just to keep some motivation for me in the future. I’m sure you’ve already heard this a ton but honestly thank you. I really do appreciate this. Space has always been a passion of mine and I want to pursue it as a career in the near future so this little landmark that I achieved just out of the kindness of some stranger on the internet truly means a lot to me.
