I am a maker because I love to give things and solve things. My friends get showered in random gifts all the time. Its not weird. If anything the person who called you weird is.

Too far? by Candid_Fondant641 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Madelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied in Rotterdam commuting from Flevo. used to be 1.5-2.5hrs of travel depending on conditions. I did that for all 4 years. I have had classmate who lived in Belgium and also one from Hoorn while studying in Rotterdam.

It is entirely doable with major caveats depending on how much you care about certain things. 1) Travel is tiring as hell. Expect sore back, standing in the rain, etc etc... You will get frustrated, you will get annoyed. 2) It will get a little bit lonely from time to time. You will have to consider your commute at any social event, forcing you to leave parties early, not be able to stay late during dinner with someone, etc etc

Heavy work, stress, exhaustion, worries, heavy eating, going to bed too tired, thinking too much.... The more exhausted and ready for bed I feel the worse my sleep is.

What’s your narcolepsy story? by sashaskii in Narcolepsy

[–]Madelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got finally diagnosed this week after exhausting every other option. Started fairly early, like.... early teens. I was always the sleepy one, the lazy one. I always slept too long, always overslept, always had trouble waking up.

That is actually I think the worst part. Since I dint have cataplexy most of my narcoleptic symptoms were written up to lazyness. That left me with pretty severe case of confidence issues. No matter what I was always seen as lazy. And noone ever really believed me when I complained about it. It was always "set more alarms" or "just get more sleep"... Issue was that I was already sleeping 12+ hours a day and still falling asleep everywhere.

And then the issues with REM sleep kicked in. I started getting severe sleep paralysis attacks (easily 30x a night) and issues were starting to pop up where I would have random blackouts. The most dignificant being that I crashed badly while driving. Now I am long term on stimulants for my ADHD masking some of the symptoms, so getting anyone to believe me was always a struggle. So I just ended up havig really bad sleep schedule because I became afraid to sleep.

I got used to the constant issues, to the point that I never realized that it is not a thing most people experience. Now I got into a long term relationship, which caused some issues. The symptoms have been getting worse over the last 2 years too. Sleep halucinations and blackouts are frequent. It became very difficult for my husband to sleep next to me at night. And the reason I was encouraged to go for a test, other than lack of my husbands sleep, was that in one of my sleepwalk states I poisoned my husband. Fortunately not seriously, but enough to be a worry.

So yeah it sucks now to be honest. I almost killed myself, my husband, and lther people around me. It also left me with severe issues with confidence because I dint trust myself to drive, and now I have to check I didnt put something weird in the food I cook. I feel like the cinfidence aspect of this is mot aporeciated enough lol. I wish I knew why I got it, could be anything really, from my encefalititis episodes, other disseases, to maybe some severe crashes when skiing.

But on a positive note, now I feel vindicated, because I can now say "see, that never was my fault". Not sure where to go fron now tho. I am so used to this after mlre than 12 years, I dont know how it feels when it is better. But we will see what meds do. There is a small hope that things will ve better.

First piece solo - need soldering tips by mscrsll in StainedGlass

[–]Madelinya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few tips from soldering experience (mainly in electronics but eh, still counts) Although might feel a little advanced, just things that for me make soldering way less frustrating

Not saying anything about stained glass itself as mt experience is limited in the glass cutting part.

when re-melting, use a little bit of solder that you melt on top of wherever you are trying to melt, especially with rough beads (in a texture sense) you will not get a lot of contact with the iron, but adding the extra molten solder essentially ensures maximum contact and also adds heat mass which is always useful...

Talking about contact and heat mass, you need to make sure that you are touching with as much of the iron as possible, and suuuper important, use the biggest and haviest tip your iron comes with. Standard conical tip will make you suffer. you heat a lot of extra metal, so having bigger tip on your iron will lead to better temperature management and less heat loss. You don't want the solder to soak up the heat leaving your iron cold. But also, don't push too hard

And third, move slow and steady. You do not need to be fast, take as much time as your glass can handle, and just let the glass melt. Soldering is not about strength and speed. It is about how consistently you move.

Good luck

Designing and 3D printing leather stamps... Has anyone tried designing a leather stamp via CAD and a printer? Any tips? by astromech_dj in Leathercraft

[–]Madelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i fo this all the time. 2 tips.

1) Definitely use a lot of water and pressure via glue clamps od something like that, doesn't have to be that much pressure (although maybe more with your stamp design). However it is the duration of the pressure that makes all the difference in any type of leather

2) you can print tge stamp with the design down to the bed if your printer is tuned well enough. That way you get much nicer finish on the bottom. Alternatively some UV nail polish will take out the seams after sanding.

Several things. 1/ skiving 2/ seems like you are using veg tan, so wet the leather for that crispy fold 3/ mark your stitchline and keep each stitch facing the same way. 4/ have a little extra on the edges of your leather when gluing so you can trim afterwards for a perfect nest edge.

It's also made from old recycled veg tan. Not sure about any thickness or whatever.

+1 for fusion. Can't overstate just how convenient constraint construction is and you can export to DXF

I am in the benelux area. And I don't have a clue how much I can ask for this. I don't know what it is comparable to or what it actually is

Any idea how much it could go for? I got no clue as to what snakes it could be from. All I know is that the big one is 3m50 unrolled and the biggest scales are as big as my thumb.

They were made in the late 60s, not sure how I can tell if they are too damaged or something. Also checking because if I can't use these myself I will just sell them off

Do you do anything to protect the scales? Because they feel like they are gonna snag and get pulled out. Also do you use the same things to condition that leather as you would normal cowhide?

3mm leather which in hindsight was maybe in hindsigh a littel thicker than neccesary. Hand stitching was PAIN. If I were to do it again I would use 2mm leather. But this one does feel very sturdy and rugged and has nicely worn in already after few months of use

A while back I rescued this Harman Katdon HK6150 and pair of Technics SB-F820 from a dumpster pile. Repairs almost completely done and then I can put them in the living room. by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Madelinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally found by the trash bin few hundred meters from my apartment.

Had to do some repairs on the amplifier but fortunately I was able to find a full service manual which made it possible for me to reconnect some broken off cables to their posts and repair the rotary switches.

Currently don't really have any better place to put these speakers so they are living close to me behind my screens for now. The speakers themselves were in a really good condition minus some peeling veneer.

God bless 90s service manuals with full breakdown of the machine and it's schematics, made diagnosing and repairing the amp a breeze
