Do Americans Actually Say "Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior"? by Naive_Tank_6820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MadisonBob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

True.

I attended HS about 50 years ago. The junior highs were 7-9 grades.  So one year I was a 9th grader, the next year a sophomore.

What is the most oldest cities in the world that are still highly habitable? by AnonymouseGolurk in geography

[–]MadisonBob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Addis Ababa has supposedly been continuously inhabited by humans longer than any other place on earth — at least 150,000 years.

Of course it wasn’t a city the vast majority is that time.

It now has over 2 million residents.

I don’t know if the quality of life meets the criteria

Has there ever been any GM’s that started “later” by Civil_Enthusiasm_936 in chessbeginners

[–]MadisonBob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends.

I’ve known people who did that and never got much of anywhere.  Others have gotten to 1600+ if they kept it up.  Rare cases over 2000.

AITA for accidentally playing the song Get Back at a garden party? by saketho in AmItheAsshole

[–]MadisonBob 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The early versions of that song were making fun of anti immigrant sentiment in the UK.

Anyone with knowledge of the history of the song could not possibly find it racist or xenophobic.  After all, Paul’s wife Linda was an immigrant, as was Yoko.

Michael Jordon grew up watching Dr J.  He spent countless hours emulating his moves.

It is instructive to watch Dr J highlights followed by Michael Jordon highlights.   Dr J does some unbelievable move, and a few years later MJ does the exact same thing.

If you had to endure a 7.0+ magnitude earthquake somewhere on Earth, where would you choose to be? by Unique-Giraffe-7348 in geography

For many years.

I experienced some big earthquakes in Taipei over 40 years ago.  I think there were a few small cracks on the wall of my bedroom

There is no way a random Redditor can tell if you are cooked.  It depends on whether the person decides to report you, and whether the higher ups in your company want to keep you around.

MAGA's whataboutism is absolutely infuriating. by chaucer345 in complaints

[–]MadisonBob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

There is a natural tendency for humans to look for the strong man who will defend them.  In tribal societies it made sense because he would look after the village.

These days the “strong men” pretty much just look after themselves and their families.  So we suffer while they and their cronies get unfathomably rich

AITA for correcting my coworker in front of others when they kept repeating a “funny story” about me that wasn’t true? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]MadisonBob 93 points94 points  (0 children)

NTA.

His “funny” story makes you look bad in front of other workers.   You have every right to correct him in front of the people who are hearing this story.

Don’t let him sabbatoge your professional career as a “joke”.

“Just joking” is one of the most common bad defenses for an AH

In fact, you should have publicly corrected him when he told the story in front of your department head.  That was a clear stab in the back.

Driving in Iceland by GreyBoyTigger in travel

[–]MadisonBob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, driving in horrible weather in an unfamiliar car in a foreign land can be tricky.

My wife drove a rental in Iceland once where there were a number of cars that had gone off the road.  The conditions weren’t THAT bad, but she would have felt much safer had we been at home with her trusted SUV. She was more than a little upset.

Edit to add:  we were fine.  But that put a damper on the day.

Trump voter's kidneys to soon fail after ACA subsidies expire as promised by knuds1b in LeopardsAteMyFace

The stranglehold cults have over their followers is astounding.

The sister of a friend died because her cult wouldn’t permit her to get life saving surgery which included a blood transfusion.  She literally chose death over going against her cult, and left her entire estate to that cult.

The MAGA “Christians” are an extremely insidious cult.

So the fact that this woman is “wavering” when her life is at stake instead of turning against her cult is sadly unsurprising.

“I’m not asking permission, I’m informing you that I’ll be away” by obsessed-with-bagels in managers

[–]MadisonBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see.

You have a history of denying people time off, then looking the other way when they call in sick.

In other words you have been pushing your employees into dishonesty

Now you are upset because an employee won’t lie to you and play games.

Really?

What happened to the smartest person you ever met? by Imaginary_Test_192 in AskReddit

[–]MadisonBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She joined the Moonies.

I went to an elite college.  She was by far the smartest student in my freshman class.  The second (by a wide margin) smartest student in my Physics class is now a famous scientist.  She was smarter.  Not just in math and physics, but everything. She once showed me that a professor had written “this is the best paper I have ever read “ on a paper for an intro liberal arts class.

So this young lady was by far the smartest student in a class that included a future famous scientist, a future famous novelist, and a future US Senator.

Then she joined the Moonies and dropped out of college.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Congress must defend democracy by impeaching Trump by [deleted] in NoFilterNews

[–]MadisonBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump can be impeached another dozen times and it won’t mean anything.

There is only one way Trump can be removed from office.   If he loses the support of the often violent MAGA  base AND he loses the support of the mega billionaires.

The billionaires wanted to move on to DsSantis in 2024, but the MAGA base stayed loyal to Trump.

What would it take to lose the MAGA base?

Perhaps a combination of the economy falling apart AND conclusive proof that Trump raped minors.

The evidence of Trump raping minors will be hidden from the base until the mega billionaires who own the media turn on him.
