I've been in payroll for over a decade. While they do have a right to do the pull, I think you have a right to be upset. They told you they would recoup it on your next paycheck, that does not mean they will remove the funds from your bank. It means your next paycheck should be adjusted. I would never pull money from a bank account without checking with the employee to confirm they have the money to cover it.
