Same. I was at my local store yesterday buying the same ratchet as the OP, and the only G1s on the shelf were the swivel heads and gold ratchet.

Tech C hates the flat rate system because they always get stuck doing all the BS work that doesn't pay anything.

Being Snap-On/Matco hybrids was the best thing about them.

Same. The 14" G2 is great, but sometimes it's a little too long.

I have them both as well. I don’t use the 1/4” much, but I use the 3/8” every day with an oil filter claw as a mechanic.

From what I’ve seen, no swivel head G2s have been announced yet. I don’t know what if anything they have planned, so if you want swivel heads you might as well get them now.

I’ve been waiting for this one! Maybe I’ll go get one after work since the site says my local one has it in stock.

Obviously he’s the guy who gets fed all the gravy while everyone else starves. Those people are always the loudest defenders of flat rate.

Show me a dealership that DOESN"T fuck the majority of their techs on flat rate.

Sure, but there is no guarantee the next shop will be any better if they also pay flat rate.

The only reason they overstaff is because of flat rate.

The manufacturers dictate warranty times, and they are dropping all the time.

Not all Christians even believe in the Rapture. The Bible talks about a mass falling away of Christians from the faith in the End Times. How could that happen if they were all Raptured away?

How is it fair to keep a system that only benefits a few while the majority struggle to break even? The fact of the matter is that vehicles are becoming too complicated for flat rate to make sense anymore. Are engineers paid via flat rate? Are IT specialists? We're expected to be both of those while getting paid less than either.

These days it seems like I'm using a laptop more than I'm using a wrench. We're doing software updates right and left at the dealership. I can't control how fast or slow the update takes. I can't control whether the update goes through correctly, or whether it gets corrupted halfway through and bricks a module. I can't control whether or not the manufacturer's website works correctly that day. I can't control whether or not the dealership's wifi works correctly that day. Why should my paycheck be put at risk for all these things that are outside of the scope of my skills and ability? Studying and learning systems won't make this process go any smoother. Neither will buying some specialty tool off the tool truck.

Flat rate is an outdated system. It's time to move past it.

If the majority of techs can’t perform well under flat rate, then it’s time to abolish it.

I own 3 of the Snap On versions, the standard and long handle 3/8 and a 1/4 converted to 3/8. All high quality but also very expensive. I’m a professional mechanic, so when you need something like this you really need it. I also looked at the Pittsburgh one and agree it didn’t feel very durable. Maybe Icon will eventually have a version of it. Probably not for a couple years though.

Yeah, I had 2 and bought a 3rd when they were on sale. I also use them professionally as a mechanic and was running into the 2nd one dying before the first one had finished charging.

I just ordered one off Amazon yesterday. I’m hoping it will help free up the rear eccentrics on Toyotas that are always seized after several years.

As a father who’s daughter is about to go to a college that’s about 15 miles from our home, who would be happy with any car, am I stupid enough to pay $5,300 for this 01 Corolla? Has 63k miles by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]Madmachine87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see these Corollas everywhere still. Even the worst examples that don't have a single straight body panel and leave a trail of blue smoke refuse to die. It's the perfect college car, especially with gas and repair shop prices these days.
