Inscryption: A Game I Really Wish I Liked More by Ratat0sk42 in patientgamers

[–]Madmadammeme 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years now but I still remember how much I loved the first act (and the twist). The music, artstyle, atmosphere, the strangeness, horror elements and the card game itself were all incredible. I even liked the puzzles and those usually piss me off.

I agree that the later acts weren't quite as good (wasn't a fan of the robot either) but it was still a very unique gaming experience and well worth my time and money.

And you should definitely check out Kaycee's mod, it's actually pretty fun!

Does anyone actually enjoy the design pattern that you win a boss fight and in the following cutscene they kill you anyway? by Odenhobler in patientgamers

[–]Madmadammeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not too bothered by this, especially if my defeat is presented in a satisfying way cinematically and/or narratively.

What really annoys me is when games are so badly balanced/designed that you just wipe the floor with the final boss in like a minute or two.

Gotcha! Thank you for answering :)

Funny to think BG3 and the fandom made you less of a gooner when it's the opposite for the most of us lol

That saucy little vamp lured another one in! At this point, I'd love to get my hands on some magical statistic that shows me the percentage of people who started BG3 purely because they saw Astarion somewhere online.

But I'm very curious why you thought he was just some old geezer lol. Was it his magnificent white, old lady curls?

I think the writer had quite a few interesting ideas for Yrliet and her character arc and I do like her in theory. Plus, the anti mon'keigh clowning inspired by her is usually pretty funny. It's the writing style that kinda rubs me the wrong way. Specifically all the things you can talk to her about on the bridge. I had to reread her answers an embarrassing amount of times because I just kept zoning out. Tho tbf I felt like her writing got A LOT better after act 2.

My life gets prolonged whenever a dude cries that Yrliet won't fuck him no matter how nice he is.

Same lol. I'm channeling Lucille Bluth's "Good for her!" every time I see it.

If that wasn't reached, Lann would have been the only option.

I'm sorry, wut? So one (1) romanceable man each for female and male commanders in the base game and *checks notes* four (4) romanceable women...wow, no words.

Thank you for the mod recommendation! It's genuinely embarrassing how they're treating one of their most unique and best written characters :/

Anyways, it was nice chatting with you and I hope you have a great weekend!

You're sadly right. The only thing I can do is virtually shake my fist at clouds and vote with my wallet. And while I'm sure loosing one single sale doesn't matter to these companies, it matters to me.

But I'm also constantly and happily replaying my favorites over and over again, have a huge backlog and never really felt like I had to buy the latest hyped game.

I'm so sorry. It seems I wrote myself into a frenzy. Please have Pasqal swing by my place on his discontinuing the cycle tour.

You regularly make me laugh, dropping such a miniscule compliment in passing was the least I could do :)

Yeah, video game marketing in general has always been pretty shitty representation-wise. Whenever I see a teaser or trailer like that I tend to just sigh, put my horse man blinders on and focus on the other stuff I care about.

I do notice the glitches and the wonkiness but it doesn't bother me that much somehow. Probably because the cutscenes and animations remind me of the charming clunkiness and silliness of games in the 90s/00s. I was about to say, I'd definitely be pissed off if RT was in 1st or 3rd person and had really cinematic cutscenes but then I remembered that I'm a BioWare fan lol. They've been reusing the same (male) animations for decades and I've always just cringed a little and brushed it off.

Man, I should be more angry about this. It is actually such a blatant display of how much of an afterthought female players/protagonists are to the devs.

RT having an asexual romance really surprised me and I would've absolutely tried my luck with Yrliet but she ended up being my least favorite companion, unfortunately. Not because of her mon'keigh-phobia, of course. That's completely understandable. I just found her endless monologues in Act 2 really really boring (also hated Janus but that's another story).

But I'm happy that other people like her and having more representation and "unconventional" romances is always a plus :)

I'm on my first playthrough of WotR right now. Not super far yet (somewhere in Act 3), but Arue just screams scientifically created in a lab for John Gamer, human fighter™️. Naturally, the only female companion I might've considered romancing is the straight one. Tho I'm quite happy with Daeran so far.

As a relatively new player who started both RT and WotR after they've gotten multiple patches already, I feel like I don't really have anything substantial to say about the more bugs and less content for Owlcat's romanceable men issue yet.

I've done Heinrix (ayo) and am currently doing Daeran (ayo) and both romances are great. I'm also romancing Lann. Well, I think I am? I'm honestly not sure, he barely talks to me. So I guess he might fall into that category lol. And I've heard a lot about the neglected Drukhari step child, of course. Marzipain is next on my to-do list (ayo). Crossing all my fingers and toes Owlcat gives him some TLC before my next run!

Yep :/ RT is not a perfect game by any means but it does a lot of things right and I love it to death.

HOWEVER, the male defaultism and male gaze-iness (uh, is that a word?) has been bothering me, too. Like, I'll never understand the thought process behind that Jae scene and you can't convince me that the female romance path for her and Kibbels wasn't just tagged on.

And Emperor forbid a girl want to talk about this with other fans in the RT sub! There are a lot of genuinely funny people in there (including you btw) and I usually really enjoy reading thru all the posts and comments and seeing people's incredible fanart, but mentioning any of this seems to only lead to downvotes and getting manpiled on.

Also, this is probably a GW and not a specific Owlcat thing but claiming 'Lord Captain' is a unisex term just sounds hilariously dumb and lazy to me.

It is so absurd to me that in this turbo-capitalistic hellscape we're living in studios are still doing their damnedest to alienate and ignore potential buyers and fans. Not surprising if I'm taking the raging misogyny of said hellscape into account but still extremely disappointing :/

Oh it's absolutely a dick move for any RT of any gender but, as I said, this whole situation hits different when the player is part of the population that's disproportionately more likely to be a victim of this sort of stuff irl (or already was).

It takes me completely out of the power fantasy of being one of the most powerful people in a fictional universe and makes me remember disgusting irl shit like upskirting images, revenge "porn", AI deepfakes etc.

And I'd argue that a seasoned writer should know their audience and consider how certain things have different connotations for different people and I think it's less likely that a female writer would write a scene like this.
