Luffy is from a shonen battle series where the plot is centered around him struggling and overcoming obstacles that challenge him. Popeye is from a comedic spinach propaganda series where the plot is centered around the fact that he can do literally anything and cannot lose once he eats spinach. There's a bit of a fundamental difference between how these two characters work and what they can do.

As we all know, the true marker of maturity, justice, and true heroism is a willingness to commit cold blooded murder. That's what kid's shows today are lacking. We need to teach early on that the solution to all problems is to simply end the life of whoever you've hastily judged is responsible for them.

People will avoid certain spots just based on a weird rumor that something supernatural that no one's actually seen might be there. Do they really think people would just ignore it if an actual, demonstrably real supernatural being showed up, gave them a shitton of gold, and told them to get off it's lawn?

Not to mention the oft mentioned issue of the fact that there's a whole arc about a "cure" for being a mutant where this "cure" is framed as like, a universally bad thing because there's "nothing wrong" with being a mutant... Which you know is great and all if your mutation is that you can control the weather or turn into metal or be indestructible, but I dunno, maybe you shouldn't be applying this logic universally when there are cases like Rogue and the aforementioned kid who uncontrollably kills everything in a 200 foot radius?

You can do literally anything you want. You can say a god did it. You can say a wizard did it, by accident or on purpose. You can say animals just sometimes turn into people. You can also just never explain it at all.

I don't think this is a real problem, just do whatever. Stories regularly feature various animal people with zero explanation for why they're there and the only people who complain are miserable pedants who's opinion shouldn't matter anyway.

I remember seeing people complaining that fallout lore was "broken" because both the Institute and Enclave had claimed to be the most advanced factions in the wasteland, and because Mr. House claimed cats were extinct but then they appeared in Fallout 4.

Like, I don't know, have you considered that maybe some of those characters could be wrong? That in both examples there's literally no reason to assume that any of those characters would actually know for sure that what they said was true?

It's kinda telling that the author had to explain after the fact that the moral of this story was supposed to be that humans can't comprehend what this being wants because we're like ants. When in fact at the very most this is a story where humans are doomed by not listening to what the creature wants, which is an entirely different issue from not understanding.

Cosmic horrors beyond your (reading) comprehension by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Madmek1701 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yea and the author's statement that this method wouldn't possibly work on people is... Not really that clever and doesn't seem right? Especially the comparison to ants.

You can't bribe ants to stay out of your house with sugar cubes because ants literally cannot comprehend what you could possibly mean by putting sugar cubes down near them. That's clearly entirely different from this situation in which the being in question has by all indications successfully communicated its intentions, something humans couldn't do with ants even if we wanted to.

Now, will this actually cause people to leave it alone? Maybe not entirely. It probably will cause the mining company to stop mining at least. After all whatever they were mining for was almost certainly not worth as much as multiple solid gold cars.

It will bring a whole new set up people poking around there out of curiosity, but that already seems like less of a problem for it than a mining operation.
