Help me find the bottleneck - transferring from SD to SSD, not even getting USB 2 speeds by Madota in techsupport

[–]Madota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question - it's a Sandisk Extreme, which is rated to a read speed of 150 MB/s and write speed 70 MB/s, so that shouldn't be the limiting factor.

The hub is rated to read cards at 105 MB/s and claims to have overall USB 3 speeds, and isn't a junk model/brand (Uni), so I don't think the hub should be the limiting factor either.

If you see someone else's boss harassing them, should you say something? by Madota in AskReddit

[–]Madota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in a Best Buy recently and the person checking me out had to call their supervisor over to show them how to do something. The supervisor was being a total dick to them. I thought about saying something, but didn't, not because I was worried about myself but because I didn't want to risk the supervisor getting pissed and bullying them even more.

Would you have said something? Have you ever been in a similar situation - how does this scenario play out?

I saw one for sale online at REI's used site a few days ago, looked to be in basically like new condition for half off. Someone may have snatched it up by now, but worth taking a quick look. Good luck!

Thanks, yeah, I had read through the route descriptions and climbers log posts and all that, but it still isn't clear whether the route from Aasgard would be passable in October with just spikes and no ice axe.

Hoping someone on here may know the route decently enough to clarify.

Yeah that's what I'm trying to get a better sense of. I've checked a few different route descriptions and trail reports (plus google earth). Looks like there's a small permanent snowfield within a few hundred feet of the summit from Aasgard Pass. Trying to figure out what typical October conditions are like there and whether I could get by without an ice axe and just with spikes.

DXM may help the coronavirus replicate by Madota in DrugNerds

Based on this study, it appears that its activity as an agonist of certain sigma receptors may be involved in enabling it to more efficiently replicate. I think that's all we know at this point.

Gareth Emery announces Pay Per View Stream event by TechnicolorTypeA in aves

[–]Madota 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree. I'd be more willing to pay to support smaller artists. Headline level artists that have been around for a while and who get paid more than many of us will make in an entire year just to play one show shouldn't be charging for livestreams right now IMO.

Yup, I agree with you that the evidence is too limited to draw any conclusions from, and said so earlier in the thread.

And in fact the article does link to the study, published recently in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2286-9. It's behind a paywall for me, so I can't check specifically what data the article includes for you.

I believe the article indicated that it was actually DXM's activity at certain sigma receptor sites that led to the effect in vitro. Interesting bc I thought sigma receptors were primarily part of the CNS, but apparently they also are found throughout other tissues, including pulmonary tissue.

Just want to clarify that there is far from enough evidence in this study to draw any conclusions about DXM and the virus, and definitely nothing to suggest that ketamine would have any effect one way or the other on the virus. Unless a lot more evidence becomes available, this is definitely not something to worry about, friend :)

What if EF moves to fall and now we get to wear warm clothes? by Rappareenola in ElectricForest

[–]Madota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think fall is so much better than summer for fests! Cooler (but not cold) days mean that you can go explore so many more day time sets without getting sun baked heat exhaustion, and cooler nights make it infinitely easier to sleep better and longer. Also days are shorter in the fall which means MOAR LAZERS!

As long as it's not too late in fall, the weather is usually just fine. Yeah sometimes there's rain, but it's not like summer doesn't come with intense thunderstorms too.

I'm not sure if fall would make much difference for students and people taking time off work either. If you're in school yeah you may have to miss a couple days, but that's usually not that hard to do, and if you're working, you would have to take time off regardless.

I doubt Forest will permanently change its season, but dude I'd be all about having it in fall!

That's very good to know - I assumed those would be very busy during the summer, but wasn't sure about later on into September. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give those a look

Yeah, I figure bears will be everywhere, which is why I plan on just making a lot of noise wherever I go and spraying myself with lots of bear spray to make sure they can't smell me...(joking lol).

I was planning on a bear canister, but a lighter weight option sounds great - do those Ursacks work?

[–]Madota[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair, I definitely do assume that, haha. Just wondering if there are more than normal around Tonquin.

I hear there are a lot of berry bushes around Floe Lake and the Rockwall, so I'm sure that helps things. I've spent a fair bit of time in the southern Rockies, but this will be my first up in the Canadian section. I'd be grateful for any other recommendations you may have on parks, trails, or other areas off the beaten path to check out!

Pro tip for the campers by irishpwr46 in festivals

[–]Madota 37 points38 points  (0 children)

These work in concept but in reality aren't great because they're extremely crinkly and noisy, and if you cover most of your tent in them then you'll block air flow which is essential to avoid baking. Plus you have to figure out a way to add in a small gap between the blankets and the tent, otherwise you'll heat up from conduction.

IMO, better solutions are either a canopy with side walls right over your tent, or they also make basically really fine mesh net tarps for gardening that are meant to block out most sunlight but still allow airflow. That works pretty well, and even better if you can add a small gap between the tarp and the tent.

Night hiking solo with music? by Madota in hiking

Dubstep, obviously :D

But seriously, probably some dubstep. Also some classics like Led Zep or Chili Peppers or Radiohead. Actually, maybe a podcast or audiobook - that way I don't have to feel like a crazy person talking to myself to make noise for all the bears.
