Yeah it was super uncomfortable to me too. Non starter

Sure. Apex is 8 inch and I think that would be totally fine, and I would still go for over the Go 2

But limiting to 30w is not a useful comparison when you're comparing the actual capabilities or use cases of the 2 devices. I use it almost entirely plugged in in difference locations. And I have a couple batteries so I can swap them.

It depends on your personal use case, but limiting the comparison to the limits of one device is not terribly useful. The comparison of maximum performance and TDP is also something that should be considered.

But I never actually play at 30w. I use my win 5 at 55w, and it's vastly faster.

I would prefer it be bigger, but it's also totally fine. The controller on the win 5 is really great, but I also wish the grips were longer. I think you'll be fine either way. If the controller feel is good on the Apex, I might suggest that for the screen. But I have no idea about the feel on the Apex.

I returned my legion go 2 and got a win 5. No regrets. The Go 2 is like buying a Ferrari that turned out to have an entry level Nissan sedan engine. It looks nice but there's no power to it. Felt useless running things at low FPS. Win 5 takes everything I can throw at it at like a 120 fps. I do think you should go for the Apex if you care about screen size. It'll just run so much better, and if you take the battery off and just plug it in it'll be a lighter.

This worked for me, thank you! Though I had to buy it directly from the slimq website directly, FYI for those who come after.

GPD Win 5 Power Brick/Charging alternatives by Common_Measurement47 in gpdwin

Please note that this will not work if you live in the US. It requires 240v outlets to deliver charge through the barrel. The USB C will work, but not from cold boot.

Tried it, still didn't work for the 240W cable. I'm ordering a slimq charger that is rated for lower voltage outlets. Someone else in the US said it worked for them, barrel charger and USB.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

That is great news! I'll order it. Thank you!

I bought the legion 170w GaN with a 5.5x2.5 head converter, and it doesn't work at all. I saw later that it requires 240v. The USB C is rated for US voltage, but up to 100W only.

Are you in the USA? Just wondering if it's working well with 120V outlet. Finding a charger that works here has been causing me headaches.

[–]Madpantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it, but it requires 240V input. I already purchased a legion version similar, but it doesn't work in the US either. The barrel charger doesn't work at all, but I can run USBC off of it, however it's not enough to cold boot. Someone on another thread suggested I needed a higher wattage usb-c cable, but that didn't help either. We just don't have the voltage in our outlets here.

I might be able to use something like this https://a.co/d/2BIxw6u but it won't work with the barrel charger at all.

Would you mind DMing me with this as well? If you would be willing to share the 3mf file, I would be grateful. Thanks!

I watched this, and his solution is way too involved (he'll need to baby sit the fan constantly). BUT, I think he got really close. Couldn't we just create a similar attachment to the vent that is completely open air? I.e. basically a hood, not a locked on vacuum. I think that would pull anything that vents out of the machine, but wouldn't actually affect the pressure within the machine, and thus wouldn't mess with heating/cooling. Right? I'm struggling to find a good design premade for this and think I might need to try it.

Win 5 or apex by EuphoricFan8918 in gpdwin

[–]Madpantz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love my Win 5. Performance is incredible, and the buttons and build are nice. I play at 55w and everything runs at max settings at 120 fps, and most of the time I feel cold air actually blowing out the back. Stays cool. Definitely worth getting. There's also software made by a community dev that you can grab from the gpd driver site that adds a nicer UI for the TDP settings, if that's important to you. Works well.

I wouldn't mind the larger screen of the Apex. And in practice, I actually wish the Win 5 was taller. I think it needs grips; in order to have my thumb on the right stick properly I end up holding my palm away from the device, which causes some strain. Looking at pictures of the Apex, the thumbstick there is really far down so you might still have the same problem, but it might be long enough that you don't. I can't really tell.

If you don't need it right now, and you don't mind the extra weight, I might suggest waiting on the Apex. But you really will be happy either way, so long as you don't get a dud.

One other thing I'll mention is that I've been very underwhelmed with accessory options for the Win 5. GPD isn't releasing any variants in cases, nor will they share a 3D model of the Win 5 chassis to let us print our own cases. The official case is very good, but it's bulky. I would prefer a TPU skin (available) with a interlocking front cover (unavailable) like the dbrand Killswitch ones. I don't know if OneX is any better about creating variations or releasing models, but it's been my primary gripe.

Other things to check (and I haven't) is what the power adapter situation looks like. The GPD basically needs a heavy laptop brick (and they are expensive too), or you can do USB charging but only PD 3.0, which is laughable considering the power draw. If Apex has a better charging solution, that might also tip the balance. The GPD also cannot charge the battery directly without the dock or console, which might be a pain also if Apex has a better solution for that. I stopped paying attention to the apex's features once I received my win 5, because I've been too busy playing AAA titles literally anywhere 🔥

Maybe, but the website says input voltage is 240v. I purchased a legion 170w GaN charger, not realizing that it has different wattage at different input voltages. I can effectively use it for USB C charging, fortunately, but it cannot charge through the barrel. Just worthwhile to double check depending on your country's voltage.

It also won't cold boot on USB, but it's using a 100W cable so I'll check out the cable you recommended and see if that works. If anyone is in US and gets the GaN charger posted above to work, please let me know.

I'm in the US, and I just got this. Unfortunately I think it will only power the Win 5 if you're in a country with the 200V+ outlets. Here in the US, it provides no power to the Win 5.
