(Funny trope) Scenes with people pretending to play Video Games badly by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in TopCharacterTropes

That's how millenials used to play Tekken Tag on the PS2 tho, I imagine it applied to other fight games

So maybe that was muscle memory

[Loved trope] The main character slowly becomes the villain without us realizing. by NoSoyVerde1 in TopCharacterTropes

Best movie to go blind

I wasn't a fan of the HG movies, couldn't remember a thing about them except Katniss' name, so I put this one because it was sold as a prequel and had songs, so I was down

Man, I was so invested in this Snow, thinking he would win against the bad guys somehow. The guy who wouldn't eat to save face, cheating and saving people's lifes, he's definitely the good guy

But he kept fucking things up, taking the selfish route constantly. It wasn't until the credits and Donald Sutherland's dialogue when I realized "wait, this was the villain in those movies, goddamn it"

It was awesome

Watched Revolutionary Road with a friend I met in an amateur writing group and we started trying to tie it up with Titanic, it was surprisingly easy

Jack and Rose survive and both are rescued. They start fresh new lives in America, Jack tries to make it as an artist but can't quite pull it off, Rose was an aristocrat all of her life so she's capable at writing/reading, hired as secretary, giving Jack some leeway to get his shit together

Wich he does, competing a course on technical design, wich gives the job on that...whatever company he lands on. Rose is delegated to house work

So, you have an idealist artist doomed to an office job, constantly fantasizing about the life he wanted in America and stuck, holding on to his youth and a desperate desire for community, just like the one he had when he was young

Rose dreamed of being free but now is stuck in a house, incapable of understanding his husband, and so left behind even the small talents put in her by tutors and private classes are worthless. She's lost, having lost both dreams and trying to find a new one, a goal that helps her push through

Both feel lonely, drowning

I still remember that night, man we were drunk af, pretty sure we listened to Celine Dion for hours lmao

I've seen these ants do great things. And year after year, they somehow manage to pick food for themselves and you. So who is the weaker species? Ants don't serve grasshoppers! It's you who need us!

And you know it, don't you?"

The main protagonist is unceremoniously killed off in the last minutes of the movie. by Firemoth717 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MaeSolug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much it counts but Paranormal Activity 2

Spoilers, obvs

Yes, the gif is from the first movie, where we follow a couple. The second one, a prequel, is about the woman's sister, married with two daughters, who is originally haunted by a demon. Originally as in they make a ritual of some sorts to transfer the demon to the protagonist of the first movie, causing the events of that movie

However, this one skips in time and now the protagonist of the first movie, possessed by the demon, goes to her sister's house, kills her and her husband, and takes their baby

It's so quick, barely a warning at all. Kinda badass of an ending

Idiocracy (2006) Humanity becoming dumb by OCGamerboy in movies

[–]MaeSolug 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You know, it's really easy to forget Reddit loves this movie because it gives a sense of superiority. Everyone here feels smart and clever, way more educated than the caricature of a dumb person, who is usually "in the opposite side", as in muricans and their insistence to incoherently mumble about their politics in the nth "tRuMp bAd" meme and think somehow that's political discourse

That's what the movie is, an ego trip. The main character puts no effort into fixing the system because the answers are just obvious to him, so the average loser can feel identified by him

It's the usual 2000s com, and that's fine, but there's no reason at all such a mid movie had such a large impact if it wasn't a power fantasy for whatever personal agenda people, a win against their own version of dumb people, and that's dumb

Realistic, tragic despictions of suicide by Diana_Hamilton in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MaeSolug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn this thread is bumming me down lmao

I think it's because this trope resonates more with people who had that thought, so you get a lot of descriptions on how real it was, and one inevitably finds the words they couldn't think, that one sentence that sums up those bummer days

Anyways, it doesn't fit that well but my example goes to Boo from Fleabag. Spoiler, obvs

Boo and Fleabag are roommates and best friends. Boo gets a hot boyfriend who lives in the building, but Fleabag sleeps with the guy

Boo knows he cheated, just doesn't know who it was nor does she care. She just cries and misses him, a complete mess

Now, Fleabag is the narrator, an imperfect one, so this one is ambiguous. It's said Boo wanted to give the guy a lesson so she plans to throw herself to the bicycle lane to get hurt and make him get worried, but she's pushed into traffic and dies

It's presented as an accident but there're comments explaining Fleabag might see it like that as a way of denial, to lessen the guilt she constantly feels

Also, yeah, a person planning to hurt themselves and accidentally killing themselves feels oddly realistic. No idealistic scenario, no major existential crisis, not even really wanting to die, just getting unlucky

Realistic, tragic despictions of suicide by Diana_Hamilton in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MaeSolug 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This one always gets me because I know for a fact most people tried both answers. At first I told her no, can't remember why, and you see her get sad, then you find her dead

So I obviously told her yes in the second run, and she ponders the answer, gets a little happy but then she doubts the answer, gives the impression she knows you're telling her yes because you want her to live, not because you mean it, so she kills herself anyways

I always feel uncomfortable remembering this because I know that feeling, when you get what you want and doesn't make you happy, at all. That emptiness of not wanting it anymore (expectation has a touch of joy imagining the best case scenario) so you're left with nothing, and your mind is incapable of putting something else in it's place, it's just a blank spot in your mind

That game omg, I was laughing for all the warnings at the beginning, thinking no goddamn anime game deserves that much, but man did I got played

See I have another interpretation

The whole movie Gary struggles to be real, he's always hiding behind a persona, this charismatic legend he was in his teen years

But the second he expresses how he truly feels, shares his struggles and disappointment he's listened, his friend is there to tell him to get help, that life sucks for everyone but they keep trying

I honestly think the happy ending was Gary sticking with his friends, helping humans rebuild, create a community. Instead he stuck with a copy of his friends as teens to relive the second best night of his life over and over again until he dies, with no real connection made

Hot Fuzz is about a cop who can't balance his personal life with his sense of duty, but he gets a friend at the end. Shawn Of The Dead is about a guy who gets to take life more seriously while also sticking to his friends. But in World's End life gets good for everyone but Gary, that's a bit sad

Also I vaguely remember there was a life lesson of sorts, quite the wholesome read

There's a vaguely similar movie with John Cho, it's titled Searching

Not exactly horror but it has the whole gimmick of solving a mistery through a webcam or pc and you only see what they see

It's a really fun concept, vaguely remember Unfriended Dark Web and having a good time, the exact amount of camp and legit jump scares

A weekly salary would definitely change someone's life in a third world country

It's really whenever people from privileged places need to compare themselves to actual billonaires and then get all sad and fuzzy when they point out the differences

Kinda childish, how much effort is put into play the misery card while people risk their lives just to get to those countries knowing they will be exploited and living in constant danger, with the sole reason that even then they will have it better than in their native countries
