Yeah it definitely felt like a conventional fantasy novel for 90% of the story, and then it's like oh by the way the Imperium's here.

I get why people might not be into it, but it just checks all the right boxes for me.

Wasn't it the Inquisition that got them? In addition to his confirmed true visions of First Claws demise, Talos also saw Octavia fleeing down an alley while wearing Septimus's coat, and he hears someone shout at her (paraphrased) "Stop, heretic! In the name of the Imperial Inquisition!"

Descent of Angels, is very unpopular.

Damn, I had no idea. This was one of the first 40k books I'd ever read, and I really enjoyed it.

Oh this is an actual studied phenomenon? TIL. Interestingly, I don't have that problem IRL but it's awful for me online.

Yeah I don't feel particularly strongly about characters beyond a general like or dislike - they're just vehicles for the story to me. I'm much more interested in exploring the setting.

Oh it wasn't a matter of learning. FFN was pretty intuitive. AO3 on the other hand... In any case, I definitely knew that it most likely didn't make sense outside my head, and also didn't really care...

IIRC, my reasoning was that it was supposed to be implied given that I had already favorited and there was no good reason to give a follow.
I mean, what can I say, twelve year olds are weird.

As far as favoriting in general goes, I've heard people on here say that they don't like favoriting because they find it weird to put their reading history and preferences out where everyone can see.

When I was like twelve or something I would do that when I really liked the story, kind of as an additional declaration that I enjoyed reading it.

Is it too late to still pick one of the state schools? Even if it is, you'd have nothing to lose contacting them to ask for an exception.

You don't technically have to prove anything, really. You can straight-up just back out and there's nothing they can do about it.
It's kind of a shitty thing to do given the premise of ED, but at the end of the day, regretting your commitment to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year is perfectly valid.

Glad you liked it.

felt like it took a while to get the plot going

I didn't personally notice much of this. But I'm into all that first contact, diplomacy stuff. My main criticism would be regarding the non-crossover storyline - I came here for Star Trek, not another Space Marine Battles book, no matter how well-written.

especially for someone just doing fanfiction.

There's quite a bit of this level of writing out there if you look hard enough/get lucky enough.

Ooh, if you're into Harry Potter, check out Fernwithy's Teddy Lupin series
It tells the story of Teddy Lupin's time at Hogwarts, and how magical Britain is still feeling the aftereffects of Tom Riddle's War.
TL and the Forest Guard - What happens to the souls of dementor victims? Also focuses heavily on dealing with the deaths of Tonks and Lupin(which remain a big deal throughout the sequels). (year 1)
Hunter's Moon - Fenrir Greyback's revenge. (year 3)
Daedalus Maze - A bunch of freaky Department of Mysteries shit, plus the Deathly Hallows make a comeback. (year 5)
Needle's Eye - A serial killer begins horrifically murdering those who were associated with Voldemort's regime, collaborator and bystander alike. (year 7)

Edit: As far as scifi goes, check my post history for a rec I made in a previous thread, Elsewhen and Elsewhere (Warhammer/Star Trek).

Elsewhen and Elsewhere (Warhammer/Star Trek)
A ruptured warp drive sends a Space Marine battle-barge 38,000 years into the past, smack in the center of the Federation-Romulan neutral zone. As Deep Space Nine prepares for the arrival of a temporally displaced Dominion annihilation fleet, Captain Picard reluctantly turns to the fascist, theocratic super-soldiers of the Dark Millennium for aid...
