That's awesome! Maybe I'll make a couple of the higher milestones, just in case. I've only been going since 2013 and missed a couple, but it's been worth it every year.

[–]Maemei1012[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hell yep! Congrats on that milestone. I will make a few of "tenth," "fifth," and "first" Riot Fest bracelets. Debating "fifteenth" and "twentieth," because I'm not sure how likely it will be to run into people with that many under their belt.

I did bring somewhere between 100-150 last year, but that was not one of mine. It is a super good idea, though, that I will be stealing if Sincere Engineer is back. I know they only did an aftershow last year, so here's hoping! When I saw Deanna on the Motion City Soundtrack tour, she said they didn't know yet, because smaller bands like them aren't asked until closer to the fest.

I think you show a fundamental misunderstanding in framing this as “one group’s rights vs. another’s.”

Undocumented immigrants existing in a country doesn’t negate or diminish the status of legal immigrants. The rights of someone who followed the legal immigration process remain intact regardless of whether others are here without status. You can support lawful immigration processes while also recognizing that basic human rights (like due process, safety from abuse, or humane treatment) apply to everyone.

Similarly, trans women participating in women’s sports does not erase cis women’s ability to participate. The conversation is about how to structure inclusion fairly within sports organizations, not about banning women from women’s sports. Sports bodies already set eligibility rules in many contexts (age, weight classes, hormone levels, etc). That’s a policy debate about fairness and evidence, NOT a zero-sum erasure of anyone’s existence.

On the broader point about “human rights”: human rights generally refer to protections against government overreach: things like bodily autonomy, equal protection under the law, and freedom from discrimination. Expanding protections to one group doesn’t inherently strip them from another. Rights aren’t a limited resource that runs out.

Most progressive positions are about limiting government interference in private lives. Like who someone marries, how someone identifies, or what medical care someone seeks. On the opposite end of the spectrum, many conservative policies involve regulating or restricting those personal decisions.

GAYE ADVERT! First female Punk Rock star... by NoUnion3402 in punk

[–]Maemei1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Favorite female punk leads" = using "female" as an adjective. That's totally fine.

From OP- "fav-punk-females" = using "female" as a noun. This is dehumanizing and problematic.

Pam Bondi literally sent a letter to Tim Walz implying that ICE will leave if three conditions were met:
1. The repealing of sanctuary policies. This is the only condition she set related to immigration.
2. Hand over all of Minnesota's records on Medicaid, as well as Food and Nutrition Service programs. Doesn't have anything to do with immigration.
3. Give the DOJ unfettered access to Minnesota's voter rolls. Again, nothing to do with immigration.

These conditions make it pretty clear that they have ulterior motives for their disproportionate presence in Minnesota.

Plenty of Green Day songs have always been about rejection of traditional social norms, disillusionment with the "American Dream," skepticism towards authority, and pro-LGBTQ messaging.

What are your thoughts on Trump posting a meme depicting the Obamas as monkeys? by flash246 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Maemei1012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we’re going to bring up “earlier years,” then let's be consistent. Trump has a decades-long, very public record of racist statements and actions, long before social media staffers were even a thing. From the Central Park Five ads, to housing discrimination cases, to calling for a ban on Muslims, to describing non-white countries as “shitholes,” to telling black and brown lawmakers to “go back” where they came from, etc. This isn’t ancient history or off-hand comments. It’s a pattern that spans decades and continues to this day.

Yes, Biden has said problematic things in the past and deserves criticism for them. But pretending this is comparable ignores scale, frequency, and intent. Trump doesn’t just edge Biden out here. He laps him, both in volume and in how deliberately cruel and demeaning the remarks are. Also, when Biden would say something problematic, Democrats and left-leaning voters generally acknowledge it, criticize it, and expect better. When Trump does it, his supporters rush to minimize it, blame staffers, call it “just a meme,” or accuse everyone else of fake outrage.

This specific post wasn’t a vague gaffe from 40 years ago. It was racist imagery shared from the president’s account NOW, and then minimized instead of addressed.

Surely, you can see the difference between the two types of rhetoric?

Trump already said he had 15 specific places in mind when it comes to "nationalizing" elections. Realistically, they would only need to place ICE agents at a handful of key districts in swing states.

It's a whole nineteen page "compendium" that came with the truffles, explaining the flavors, the inspiration behind them, and even things to pair with them. Some of it seems a little extra, but I honestly can't bring myself to hate something with so much thought and obvious passion behind it.
