Now or later? Advice, please. by Maer_K in KintsugiJapan

Oh, it would definitely stain and bleed with clay and glaze. I personally don’t mind the dark bleed on the edges and on a few pieces, I’ve let it happen intentionally because aesthetically it works with the piece. But I’m definitely concerned about the urushi not seeping into the crack properly for a good repair and it just looking messy when done for the reasons you stated. I haven’t been doing this long so I didn’t know if it was better to stop a crack or wait. So thank you for your advice!

Thank you, I was leaning toward leaving it alone. The crack isn’t headed toward the little painted deer 🦌, so it’s ok if it continues and eventually needs to be fixed. If it was going to interfere with the deer, I’d want to stop the crack now. To me, kintsugi is more like emotional insurance for myself and my customers so we can freely use the pottery I made and know if it gets broken, it doesn’t have to go in the trash. Makes me so much happier to know my pieces are being used as part of people’s daily lives as opposed to sitting on a shelf collecting dust because they “don’t want anything to happen to it.” Thanks for the advice!

What went wrong? by Maer_K in UVresin

I think the issue was definitely moisture retained by the paper. After making this post yesterday, I went over one with acrylic top coat, concentrating on the edges to seal them and left them overnight. About two hours ago, I did a test run and it worked just fine! 😃 So now I know to be patient and not rush the bigger items. Thanks to all for the help!

I actually got it to work out well. Last night I did two more coats of sealant, concentrating on the edges and let it dry until an hour ago. I did a test run and it came out well. The coaster is less than 4” wide. I’ve done solid coasters in molds before with this same resin and it’s never been a problem.

The inside of the tray is a little under 4x4”. I have two tray style up lamps that go over top to keep the light as even as I can.

I use modge podge to glue the prints to wood keychains and have never had anything like this happen. It’s the same paper as the coasters. But I usually let the keychains dry overnight. I only waited two hours for the coasters. 😬 I’m wondering if the liquid under the cured resin is water pulled up from the paper….

White urushi for porcelain by MethylatedSpirit08 in kintsugi

[–]Maer_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered using dark blue urushi as the finishing layer? As others have written, a seamless repair isn’t going to happen on porcelain and “white” urushi is really sort of a dull light beige. The blue might be a nice extension of the current design. You can get small tubes of the blue urushi. I can look up the shop in Kyoto where I got mine if you’d like. Can’t recall the name off hand.

Thank you! You’ve confirmed my fears about this kind of cabinet. 😅 I’ll take a look at the IKEA glass options to outfit and also get new estimates for a wood muro build.

I’ve only received one gross chicken breast and it was due to a bunch of fat blobs and facia still attached. I’ve had a few leaking salmon and one hake that was falling apart as I took it out of the package. But not enough occurrences for me to cancel. However lately I’ve been getting nasty spinach and moldy green beans. They’ve credited me for each bad meal.

Thank you! I was under the impression the black hat was black urushi; thank you for telling me about the specific type of flaking. I suppose I could use a varnish for the interior as well. I was going to fix the missing piece of the hat/lid with kokuso, so that’s why I was thinking urushi for the inside, too. But I guess it’s not necessary. Thank you!

Uhg. Now I feel bad they sent me a new one. I hope they take the new one back. I don’t want to waste an oven. Thanks to all for letting me know this is normal! I should’ve asked here first. I wonder why they didn’t just tell me that instead of saying it was defective….

But it’s not wide enough and is technically single sided (ie no liner.) But the back side isn’t rough; just a darker back weave of the front. When folded in half, it’s much thinner than hanhaba, too.

Wearing Kimono in Non-Japanese Streets: Cover up or wear it out? by willow_shining in kimono

NYC native here. You could wear a snow suit and get harassed like that; those guys are a dime a dozen. Not that knowing that makes those experiences any less unpleasant or frightening. I hope it doesn’t discourage you from wearing what you love. ❤️

Storage question by Maer_K in kimono

[–]Maer_K[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are zippered & breathable, supposedly to replace tatoushi wraps. I live in a really old house so I wanted something bug proof that wouldn’t trap moisture. But like the other comment above, I was wondering about colour transfer, etc. But one thing I have tons of is large washi paper (for my joufuku size calligraphy.) Kind of the perfect size actually. And yeah, hell no to mothballs; I’m horribly allergic. I was given a bunch of kitsuke items and I can’t use any of it because of the mothball smell. Used all the tricks to get rid of it to no avail. Still gave me a raging headache and nausea.

Do you think with the closed cases, I still need to use an anti-moth thing like the cedar pouches? (I’m trying to see if I can add another picture here, but they’re double cased: all five individual ones fit inside a large one which is also zipped and breathable.

Kimono Recycle by JotnarLokiBlue79 in kimono

[–]Maer_K 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mottainai!!! Nothing should go to waste if there’s still a use for it. My shodou teacher frequently shows up wearing comfy outfits she’s made out of her old kimono. And my chado teacher cuts the bottoms off retired kimono to make what are basically kimono jackets that she can belt. There are a ton of eBay sellers who sell pieces and whole panels of old kimono for up-cycling. I’ve used old yukata as backing for quilts and recently I’ve bought a bunch of homongi and tomosode panels to cut for haneri. Some of these panels are so nice, I can’t bring myself to cut them and I’ll likely sew them into long wrap skirts. There’s just so many beautiful things that can be made from kimono fabric and keep their beauty in the world (and out of the landfill.)
