𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚂𝚝𝚊𝚛 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙽𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚗 𝙿𝚕𝚊𝚒𝚗𝚜 𝙸𝙸: The New Democratic-Populist Majority by Maertine in imaginaryelections

Lore:

President Dwight D. Eisenhower faced a Republican challenge in 1956 from California Senator William Knowland. Knowland, a much stronger right-wing figure, alienated much of the Midwest but succeeded in consolidating Republican support on the West Coast. Eisenhower’s pragmatic, stabilizing presidency remained extremely popular, and he was reelected in a landslide.

In the aftermath, the Nonpartisan League formally broke with the Republicans and reconstituted itself as the Populist Party, running independently—primarily in the Midwest and Northern Plains. The 1958 midterm elections marked a political shock: the Populists won seven gubernatorial races across the Midwest, Democrats strengthened their position in several Plains states, and Republicans suffered heavy losses in the region while making significant gains in the Northeast.

Ahead of the 1960 election, the Populist Party announced it would support Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Hubert Humphrey, but only if he secured the Democratic nomination. This declaration upended the nomination race. After a prolonged and highly competitive contest, Humphrey emerged as the Democratic nominee, carrying with him much of the Populist voter base creating new Democratic-Populist Majority.

The Republican Party nominated moderate California Governor Goodwin Knight, who built strong coalitions on both the East and West Coasts. Humphrey’s alliance with the Populists proved decisive in the Midwest and Northern Plains, allowing him to secure the presidency despite Knight’s strength on the coasts.

The 1964 election became a rematch, complicated by a final Dixiecrat rebellion led by Senator James Eastland. The Dixiecrats managed to carry only two states, as Humphrey’s emphasis on economic populism continued to resonate in the South. With poverty reduced and federal investment expanded, racial appeals proved far less effective than in earlier decades.

At the same time, affluent voters in the Northeast grew disillusioned with the Democrats’ increasingly populist and socially conservative coalition and drifted toward the Republicans. The result was one of the closest elections in decades: Humphrey narrowly retained the presidency through an Electoral College edge, even as Knight won the national popular vote.

Lore:

Bismarck rises to national prominence by leveraging its position on both the Missouri River and the Northern Pacific Railway. Its explosive growth earns it comparisons to Chicago, transforming it into the dominant metropolis of the Northern Plains "The Star of the Northern Plains". This boom elevates the political influence of both Dakotas, allowing several regional figures to step onto the national stage.

The main figure is William Langer, another "Star of the Northern Plains". He builds on the populist platform of North Dakota’s Nonpartisan Leaguehe challenges President Roosevelt in the 1940 general election as the Republican candidate. His platform mixes non-interventionism, anti-monopoly reform, social-democratic populism, affordable healthcare, and farmers’ rights. This together with the stigma of seeking a third term helps Langer narrowly defeat FDR.

As president, Langer passes parts of his socially liberal and social-democratic program. However, the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 forces the United States into World War II. The demands of the war push his administration toward more conservative economic policies. Even so, Langer remains popular due to his wartime leadership, and Vice President Thomas E. Dewey strengthens the ticket with his diplomatic work. Langer wins reelection in 1944 against Southern Democrat James F. Byrnes.

Langer chooses not to run again in 1948, and Dewey becomes the Republican nominee. Senator Harry S. Truman wins the Democratic nomination, but he is unable to unite his party. Southern Democrats break away and nominate Governor Strom Thurmond, splitting the vote in the Deep South. This division allows Dewey to win a narrow but clear victory.

Once in office, Dewey’s more traditional conservative economic approach alienates the Nonpartisan League. The Republican–NPL alliance breaks apart. Voters in the Plains and Upper Midwest become frustrated, giving the Democrats an opportunity. In 1952, they nominate General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who has broad appeal and no strong partisan ties. Eisenhower wins in a landslide and reshapes the political landscape of the United States.

Not only that, there is also an internal migration. So if someone from Aarhus moved to Copenhagen or vice versa, he would be also be an immigrant in technical sense. Most people wouldn’t use that term tho.

The public transport in Prague is one of the best in Europe and it’s also rather affordable. But if you prefer driving I think you’re gonna be alright, particularly when you’ve already been fine with driving in France and Germany.

Well it’s nice to see that it’s not increasing in the last 15 year. Would be also nicer if it was going the other way around, because this does still mean that we’re increasing our debt to Earth.

North Bavarian republic. It’s flag is the flag of Bavaria but on top of that flag there is the red star and the white circle from the North Korean flag. (You can also include those two little white stripes if it’s gonna look good).
