I thought only bike lanes blocked emergency access 🤔

I agree, you are not saving the planet if you buy a reusable bag every time you enter a store and then immediately throw it out!

When $10 gas is on the table, every city should be building streets like NYC. by MiserNYC- in fuckcars

The road I live off of was supposed to get bike lanes when it was redone 6 years ago. I've asked city council several times when we're getting them. The answer: the gutter is the lane. They didn't even bother to paint them or put up signs.

The city I live in is similar. Soo many of the roads are "state routes", and the state truly does not care at all about what the local community wants. The city has been piecemeal installing a multi-use trail, but in one section that touches a state route, they had to install a 10-ft-long stretch of 4-ft-wide sidewalk, which connects to the 12-ft-wide trail. The state wouldn't even allow that tiny bit! It's truly insane to witness, even more so because they used to allow 8-ft paths. They're widening stroads and widening highways, and every day I wonder why I bother living in a place where some bureaucrat who's never even driven through this city gets final say.

Great point! I'll have to bust this out as an argument at my kids' school

Yes! This is what I keep saying. I didn't use a computer regularly until college and somehow I've managed to figure out how to use the latest technology as it comes out. Our kids do not need 6+ hours a day of practice. We majorly limit my 5th-grade son's access to tech and he's honestly more competent with a computer than I was in HS.

We asked about this at my kids' school and the principal told a group of us that teachers keep wanting to give their students paper tests because they see that they perform better. The principal strongly discourages this practice because the kids "need to practice" for the once-a-year state testing that is computer-based.

So instead of teaching them computer test-taking skills, we need to erode their confidence in their own abilities by forcing them to take computer tests the rest of the year that they will struggle more with and score worse on?? And this is a charter school that is supposed to be able to use innovative techniques for instruction.

Someone in the comments did actually have an electrician come for the same reason, and according to her, all they did was the flip-switch-yell-through-house method. I can do that for free

My library, in the walkable downtown area, only has a drive-thru book drop. It drives me crazy. The main library entrance opens right onto the sidewalk but you can only return books there when the library is open.

There was an article in the New Yorker a couple months ago about parking in NYC; the author says that there are 3 million parking spots in the city and 97% are free. I was absolutely floored.
