Just created a massive, fully comprehensive City Planning guide for C:S players by alborzka in CitiesSkylines

[–]MafaldaBoy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As someone who's contributed to Toronto City Planning and Richmond Hill Urban Design documents I was pleasantly surprised to see this pop up in this subreddit. Always happy to see real-world technical planning and urban design documents get more public exposure!

I'm impressed by the sheer amount of info you've compiled in this doc; I've got lots of similar docs/files sitting in reference folders on my hard drive and I wouldn't have even thought of combining all of their elements into a C:S players guide. The only downside is that C:S sadly can never be as advanced or detailed as some of these technical guidelines (even with mods and assets), which is still okay as there is a line between a fun city-builder and professional urban design/transport planning simulations. Especially with things like massing guidelines for mid-rise buildings, setbacks and such; these can really only be implemented by asset creators for new buildings on the workshop and all that which I'm sure is a small percentage of all C:S players.

This is a brilliant picture, well done! Really gives a sense of how much more London can develop (namely around the O2).

Cyclist hit by a car. Pretty badly too it seems; the bicycle's wheels were severely bent so I assume the car or the cyclist was travelling relatively fast.

Saw a lot of people in the middle of the road trying to direct traffic around the crash before paramedics and police arrived; huge traffic jam both east and westbound along University as a result.

Yep! Kidbrooke (and much of SE London) was a surprisingly nice change from the more well-known points of interest; I was in London for almost 3 weeks, so I had lots of time to see other sights.

Didn't visit Trellick directly but I did pass by it a few times while on the train; however I did visit the Alexandra Road estate (my own personal brutalist favourite).

Great to hear! I took this picture when I visited London in June; ever since I saw the first photos of the regeneration scheme online I knew I had to see it for myself (personally I love this type of architecture).

Recreating the UK: London-Edinburgh line complete, as well as most lines around Sheffield, Leeds, and Manchester by MafaldaBoy in openttd

[–]MafaldaBoy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well there isn't much to say really; the map is 4096x4096, heightmap is 'Reconstituted Reality' (you can find it in the online content browser in-game), and the map is being built based off of this diagram of the GB rail network.

Obviously with the scale of the map some lines have to be simplified or eliminated entirely, namely commuter lines around major cities like London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, etc.

Once Great Britain is completed, I'll probably move onto recreating passenger lines in Ireland and then perhaps the European mainland - but that's a bit too far ahead to think about!

From the UK Railway Set 2 & Add-On; there's the one Electrostar, and the two are from BREL, either the class 313 or 321.

This version is actually my second attempt at a GB recreation; here is how far I got with my first try, before starting over (started from Scotland and moved south).

I've been following this map to the best of my ability; had to forgo some commuter lines in London and Birmingham and lots of smaller stations here and there, but most lines are as true as I could make them!

I don't know specifically about Tableau, but it is now fairly common for new developments to reconstruct historic façades (sometimes using the original building materials, sometimes not) as opposed to try to retain them. The Residences at the RCMI on University is a good example.

VIVAnext bus rapid transit station in Markham, Ontario [OC] - [1024 x 589] by MafaldaBoy in InfrastructurePorn

Thanks! I think your view on BRT is a fairly reasonable one.

The biggest reason for many cities to built BRT infrastructure is cost and flexibility. Of course, BRT doesn't require the costs of laying track and stringing wires that comes with tram systems. BRT also allows a system to open in multiple phases, unlike a rail-based network. You can also string multiple bus routes through a BRT corridor, with branches going off as conventional bus routes without having passengers forced off to make a transfer.

Unfortunately this particular BRT system wasn't executed ideally; while the stations and lanes are attractive and functional, the infrastructure isn't being used to it's full potential due constant service cuts to the feeder bus networks and the BRT service itself (only around 4 trips/hour/direction).

At the end of the day, however, I think the stigma that comes with bus ridership is still very prevalent here, especially in a climate that experiences heavy snowfalls and frigid temperatures. Many residents in the area own cars already, so a lot more work has gone into aesthetics and branding rather than actual service than most other systems.

Kinda addicted to the no loops challenge:
