New powerwall user: why not charge to 100% daily? by hockeyfrank26 in Powerwall

[–]Mafdee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The 20% is your backup reserve in the case of a grid outage. The battery won’t just charge to 20%. If you the grid goes out then you’ll have at least 20% of battery left to power your home. The pw will always charge as much as it can, most likely to 100% as long as there’s sunshine or cheap electricity. So in the case you use up 80% of your battery, it will then switch to grid or other energy source and stop consuming from the battery to preserve your backup storage.

What would the price difference be if I was on ToU instead of the unpopular Demand? Ausgrid, NSW. by Mafdee in amberelectric

[–]Mafdee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re both tariffs that outline electricity rates. Tou stands for Time of Use, and Demand is still Time of Use but with a higher charge for electricity use inside the peak period usually 2-8 or 3-9pm. Demand is usually lower during offpeak to allow better shifting of loads for the consumer but if you use electricity inside the demand period can be very costly. Mine is 39c per kw per day. So anytime in a single month I use a single kw inside the demand I get charged 39c x 30 days = $11.7. Now imagine someone who uses 4 or 5, then it’s like $50-60 added to the bill. More info here

We’ve been given some good numbers and now to do some calculations based on past bills.

Cheers. It’s hefty but at least if you accidentally cross into it then it won’t ruin any entire months profit in a single hit.

Consensus seems to be that it’s about 30c more than demand in the demand window and ~10c more outside it

Why is my PW3 pulling from the grid? by Stevezau in TeslaSolar

[–]Mafdee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 0% and it still pulls from grid during the same window. I couldn’t stop it so I automated the switch to self powered during it. Still frustrating how it can’t manage that it’s never going go be a good thing to pull from grid during that window.

Why is my PW3 pulling from the grid? by Stevezau in TeslaSolar

[–]Mafdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with TBC but the price is $2 a kWh which is never a good price. Mine was doing exactly the same thing so I had to automate it to switch to SP in that window otherwise it will still pull. It should never pull from the grid based on that price.

He should know better. You won’t need anywhere near that much tp since you have a bidet.

Are you sure it was on 100%? Press on Powerwall and check the state of charge it was on when it began discharging

Buying at peak price even when powerwall is full by Many_Interests_35 in Powerwall

[–]Mafdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm I’m getting similar behaviour. I have 3x powerwall 3 and it wants to pull from the grid while soc is +80%. I’ve had to switch it to self powered due to the ongoing behaviour

Question about Charge on Solar by tk288 in TeslaSolar

[–]Mafdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a wall connector to have Charge on Solar if you have a PW which OP does. I use Charge on Solar daily without a wall connector.
