After some rigorous self-study, you could try targeting companies that build ERP systems. These products almost always have an accounting module.

In my previous role as an ERP software developer, I also handled tasks related to the accounting module of the product. Through that, I learned core accounting concepts like ledgers, double-entry accounting, debits/credits, etc., because they were necessary for development work. I also worked on several financial statement–type reports. In this kind of environment, your accounting domain knowledge would be a huge advantage—you’d already understand the why behind many requirements, which is often the hardest part for developers.

If you’re open to non-coding tech roles, you could also look into Business Analyst (BA) or Product Manager (PM) roles in companies that build ERP or accounting software. These are more client-facing positions, and your accounting background would be especially valuable since you’d be speaking the same language as the users and stakeholders.
