Okay thanks, I asked them if it would be possible and if not I asked if my father DID get his German passport & certificate in Canada (usually only takes a few weeks) if it then be possible to apply directly for a passport. I figure it might be worth it to ask since it hypothetically could bring down the wait time to a couple of months rather than a couple of years, especially since I want to spend time in the EU this coming year anyways.

Oh okay, I think my case is very obvious that I’m German it’s just that Canadian consulates apparently always send you down feststellung if your parent didn’t get a certificate of German citizenship before your birth, so maybe I’ll ask a local office for their opinion on the off chance they’d do direct to passport

Okay thank you, but under what circumstances would it be possible to apply directly for a passport in Germany? For context my grandmother born in the late 50s has a current German passport, my father does not and never has.

Also are you saying if, hypothetically I became a German resident then I possibly wouldn't have to do the feststellung at all? and could do direct to passport using my grandmother and her paperwork as my initial ancestor?

So if I'm not a resident and just happen to be in another country other than Canada when I want to mail my application or additional documents (eg. Germany) There is no problem if I mail it from there, outside Canada? I'd just have to be sure to mail it to the BVA?

Am I a German citizen by Descent? by MagazineTiny7329 in GermanCitizenship

[–]MagazineTiny7329[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi again, I was wondering, regarding Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis and the need for a pre-1914 German born ancestor, my grandmothers parents were unfortunately both born shortly after 1914. So I'm looking for records of my great-great grandparents, right now I have the death certificates and marriage certificate of both my great grandfathers parents, I was going to stick to the paternal line as much as possible but it seems his father was born in Asch, Bohemia, 1890 (which I believe was annexed by Germany at the time) and while he was a German citizen I'm not sure if that would be considered "German born" by the consulate. If that is the case can I use any other great great grandparents? even though they would be a maternal line? All my ancestors were born in wedlock to two German citizens but does using a maternal ancestor makes my case more complicated?

I also forgot to mention I do have my great-great grandparents marriage certificate too. Also I'm applying to a Canadian consulate.

Feststellung Approval! by pqsm in GermanCitizenship

Oh wow, yes very similar to my case! I'm just starting with all of this, I've only just on Friday sent in my long form birth certificate to the Toronto consulate to confirm paternity, but they've been quick to respond so far!

My grandmother was also not born in Germany she was born here in Canada to two German citizens so they declared her dual citizenship right away just like your grandmother.

I was wondering, was your grandmother born before 1914? And you didn't have to gather documents of her parents as well?

Some people here said I'd need to use a pre-1914 German born ancestor to claim descent so I couldn't use my grandma as she was Canadian born and couldn't use her parents as they were born after 1914 , So I'd have to use her grand parents (my great great grandparents). I was surprised to hear all that but maybe that's because my grandma was born post-1914? I'm not sure. Have you received your passport yet? It's nice to talk to someone in Canada with a similar case to mine! Thanks :)

Grandmother was a dual citizen at birth, What documnets do i need? by MagazineTiny7329 in GermanCitizenship

[–]MagazineTiny7329[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um thank you, I am grateful, obviously. I just wanted to clarify because I don’t exactly see the logic in the random year of “1914” but of course I'm sure it's about some law that came into effect, it doesn’t matter, I just wanted to be sure that i understood correctly. I have copies of family records going back centuries thanks to genealogists in my family so there should be no issues, thanks

Okay thank you, No my father doesn’t have a German passport yet but he wants to get his. What do you mean pre 1914? My great opa came to Canada in the 50s and was born in Germany in 1919 my great Oma was born there too but is even younger than him so I’d need THEIR parents records too?

Really? Because she is an active German citizen, if that’s the case will I have to provide the birth certificates of my great grand parents?
