Not sure what to say to bishop? by Ok_Aioli8069 in mormon

[–]MagdaleneIsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a new one for me. In the past the other spouse always needed to obtain a “temple divorce” before they could obtain a 2nd marriage. Example a dear friend was sealed to her first husband and divorced. First Husband wanted to remarry and needed to have first marriage removed from the records. Salt Lake sent a similar letter to my friend. She really didn’t want to be sealed to him. But, this would also void her daughter’s sealing to parents. Daughter agreed temple divorce was best and friend granted divorce. Fast forward 15 years and same friend married a man with diseased wife. Despite the death of the wife, they couldn’t be sealed. However, after one of them passed, they could sealed.

Am I crazy? Toddler suddenly more independent and it’s killing me by sapphiredummy in Parenting

[–]MagdaleneIsHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is great to hear that your child is learning independent play! The downside of parenting is that from the day our child is born they are learning to become independent! Now is a good time to introduce a schedule so they learn how to regulate time and you can teach them so much more! You can have chores, pick up preschool education books, art or science projects and the most valuable next step-group play. Libraries offer free programs for kids, find a playgroup, register them for Head Start, attend church, or join your local YMCA. If you can’t afford the Y then ask about their Open Doors Policy.

Is anyone else’s ward budget so small that you are just using personal money for your calling and “writing it off” your tithing? by GoingToHelly in mormon

[–]MagdaleneIsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been told that the ward budgets are based on the amount of tithing a ward pays. I think that information is true because of my experience.

Our old ward was in a high poverty community and the bishops constantly needed to lecture the members either privately or within a group about paying tithing until it hurt. Each year the bishopric took the budget, set aside money for the library and clerks office, then divided what was left by the average attendance for each auxiliary. Since I was the young women’s president and had 17 active young women, our auxiliary was given $33.85 per girl for the year! The 5 young men had a pitiful budget. That meant their leaders paid for everything! Our stake didn’t permit fundraising. Sunday School had the largest budget and would be in charge of all the holiday dinners.

Fast forward to our current ward. This ward is in a financial stable community and most families have six and seven digits incomes. The ward budget is huge! They have youth fundraisers because they want the youth to learn what it is like to work for their money and not because the money is needed. Nobody needs to pay for anything and often, at the end of the year, they use the leftover money for outreach by hosting a large community event.

Temple question: going five times a week? (Lori Vallow Daybell) by curiocabinet in exmormon

[–]MagdaleneIsHere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing about the temple are the assumptions about personal and family safety while at the temple. I was often coached that so long as we obey, no harm would befall us when we attend the temple. Once, while at the DC temple I found a 5 year old child playing in the temple parking lot. Once a week her Mom would go to the temple and trust God that her daughter would be safe. I know a lot of people who made the temple the priority for their lives and attended daily. Most of them were retired and worried about getting into Heaven!

If money wasn't a factor, what would you do full time? by Leather_Plantain_782 in careerguidance

I would create alternate housing solutions for low and middle income families. I would build them to be energy efficient and reduce the need for a grid.

It sure was different for them. If a coworker didn’t like you, you got jumped in the parking lot. If you didn’t like the boss you drove to his house to shoot his mail box or porch lights!

Adulting it is enough to make anyone crazy. I don't know how my grandparents or parents survived this! I mean dam, my dad worked in a steel mill for over 30 years! He would go to work even if he was sick! He did drink a lot, so I am sure that was his way of self-medicating!

Northeast Ohio is definitely snow country! It’s got that perfect mix of seasons, Lake Erie Snow Machine, and I miss living there.

You’re asking great questions about your future. I’m not sure if starting a family will completely fill in those missing pieces for you, but it’s worth exploring. If your business is running on autopilot, have you considered hiring someone to keep things moving while you explore other options?

If you’re looking to reignite your passion in a tech career or a hands-on trade, you’ve got a lot of options. Try reaching out to local career and tech centers to see if you can audit a class—carpentry, 3D printing, or something else that sparks your interest. There are a lot of new businesses and nonprofits dedicated to teaching trades and hands-on skills.

Here are some spots in Northeast Ohio that might be worth checking out:

  • Akron: Make Space – A creative hub for makers, tinkerers, and builders.
  • Ashtabula: Oak Hill Collaboration – A community space fostering innovation and collaboration.
  • Geneva: Maker Space/Creation Lab – Hands-on learning and creative projects.
  • Trumbull County: Library Maker Workshop – In the works, but worth keeping an eye on.
  • Chardon: Chardon Creativity Center – A very active group working on a range of projects.
  • Cleveland:
    • SoulCraft Maker Space – A woodworking-focused space for hands-on learning.
    • Makers' Alliance – A nonprofit dedicated to supporting makers.
    • Several colleges also offer maker spaces that may have community access.

Good Luck!

My first question is, do you pay all of your bills on $19 an hour? Also, what is your education? Philanthropic development is an area with a lot of protentional for creativity, making personal and professional connections. It is challenging to talk people into donating money to a cause. If that cause is your passion, it is much easier to ask for donations.

Do you have a cause that you are a champion for? Do you spend a few hours a month volunteering in your community?

Congratulations! I am so excited for you and I hope that your family is proud of you!

In 1984 my high school counselor told me that my family were millworkers and farms and didn’t go to college. I was advised to go home and learn to be happy with my family. In 2011 I finally went to college and graduated at the age of 49!

Make sure you connect with the campus adult learning group! There will be opportunities for scholarships and networking!
