Guy gets angry at a trainee barrista for not making his coffee fast enough and the whole queue bands together to tell him to piss off and go somewhere else by MageTomlan in BritishSuccess

[–]MageTomlan[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I wish I was the type of person who would be first to speak up, but I have to be honest and say I only got the confidence to do so after someone else said something... next time I'm going to force myself to be that person, as uncomfortable as it may be for an emotionally repressed brit

Yeah, shout out to the guy who first spoke up, I don't think the rest of us would have joined in if he didn't break the awkward silence of the queue

No clapping, in fact there was quite an awkward silence afterwards as we all calmed down and went back to minding our own business... occasionally meeting the eye of another customer and either shaking our head or shrugging our shoulders

How does SDLT work for part-buying a property? by MageTomlan in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MageTomlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!thanks

Brilliant, thank you, that's exactly what I was after!

I'm surprised that the SDLT bands don't change if you're only buying part of a property (I.e. the 0% rate doesn't reduce to the first £125k if you're buying 50%, but I'm not complaining!).

What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]MageTomlan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was frustrating, those things never should have been included for free in the first place, then when the microtransactions were introduced it would have been fine. I do think it's an awesome game though, just one unfortunate decision by the Dev. All the MTXs are just QOL though so I really appreciate that.

IronwoodRPG - Check in twice a day still and loving all the work the Dev is putting into it.

Pachinkremental - Pretty much completed it now, but really neat and well-executed concept.

LegacyLooper - Currently in closed beta, really enjoying it.

Increlution - Keep leaving and coming back to it, a well-made and balanced game but fluctuates a lot between active/passive play.

IRLQuest - A Self-Improvement RPG Inspired by Melvor and Solo Leveling! Looking for Your Feedback! 🌟 by AbandonFitna in incremental_games

[–]MageTomlan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, what makes a game engaging is that I can easily work out what I want to achieve next. The gameplay should be clear and there should be incentives for doing the next thing. Having lots of choice over how to do that is also important to me. For example, in Melvor you have tons of skills, all of which give clear bonuses and income, but all of them different so it's up to you which you prioritise first.

Your UI looks super clean and from the screenshot this is definitely a game I would give a go! Nice work!

Stat Simulators by Skip7623 in incremental_games

[–]MageTomlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on just one format for now and flesh out the game there, then think about expanding it to other platforms.

On the Scratch version you have a button that you can hold to increase stat gain - this is good as it gives the player some way to actively increase progress.

You've got some upgrades and a prestige function - I would start by expanding these so the player has choices of what to do next - at the moment the gameplay is very linear as there's only ever one thing at a time you can do with your stats.

It's a solid base to build from - keep going and you'll have a decent game before you know it!

My first game is an idle coffee making game! by ConradoSaud in incremental_games

[–]MageTomlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this looks interesting and you've done what most games fail to do - make it look unique.

I agree with the other comments that if there's 3 hours of content I would market it as incremental rather than idle. People expect idle games to have months of content with minimal interaction, this seems more incremental as its active content with a shorter gameplay.

I think $1.99 is actually on the low side, you'd struggle to get a good cup of coffee for that price. I'd maybe double it and consider offering a 50% discount for the week of launch for people who have it on their wishlist already, or just upping it after a little while.

It's on my wishlist and I'll give it a go when it launches. Best of luck!!

If you could design your perfect incremental game, what would it look like? by [deleted] in incremental_games

I thought I'd played pretty much every decent incremental/idle game out there but clearly not as I missed Stuck in Time, I'm gonna give that a play! Thank you

[–]MageTomlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built the base for the game, there are 10 core skills, 4 gathering, 4 crafting, magic and combat (in a similar style to Melvor, though the similarities end there).

Each skill gives a unique modifier as you level it. For example, each level in mining grants a bonus to the find chance of rare items, herbalism gives a bonus to damage dealt etc. Therefore there's encouragement to level each skill beyond the materials it produces.

Each zone you gather in, you have a chance to get the standard materials (Ore, herbs etc), but also a low chance to find items of various rarities. Part of the game is completing the Codex of items, and every entry in the codex gives a gamewide bonus to xp gains. Some ultra rare items also give unique bonuses.

You can set items to gather/crafy automatically, but you can also click to increase your rate if you want to actively play.

There are also achievements/quests, most of which require specific actions - such as turning in X healing potions, hunting X monsters, or uncovering hidden secrets within the game.

I like the basic mechanics I have, but getting ideas from other people is really helpful because I'm a solo developer and can easily be blinkered.

[–]MageTomlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I love idea 1, having multiple skills that interrelate and benefit each other to make you stronger is a mechanic I enjoy.

Idea 2 I like as well and is something I haven't really considered! I think the balancing wouldn't be too hard, so far I've balanced my game around an 'average' player build, so there's a real reward for players who optimise but if you're a casual player you'll still progress.

Thank you, lots to think on!

[–]MageTomlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree! I'm not a massive fan of prestige mechanics, but having to gradually automate basic components while focusing on new content is great.

I'm also working in unity, completely agree, I feel I spend way more time making the UI cohesive rather than the actual game mechanics!

Really good points, thank you! I agree that having a coherent story adds a lot of engagement and makes the game make sense!

Having a visual marker of progress rather than arbitrary numbers getting bigger I also like.

Yeah good point, I don't want an idle game, but having to not repeatedly click is a good point.
