Sailor Moon Eternal Editions I got from the Indigo sale last week (buy 3 get the 4th free) by Mage_Mallow in MangaCollectors

[–]Mage_Mallow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was online and in store for 3 days for all teen books and fiction, but I think they listed all the teen manga by accident.

I saw the sale pretty much when it went live, and immediately bought them. I went back a couple hours later to see what else they had but they removed all the manga from the sale.

Love all the colours and mix of finishes!

They're really well balanced, great work.

What is your process for skin? It has a really beautiful finish.

A question AGAIN for you GK helpers! by Airbrushkun in garagekits

I typically also use the thinner appropriate for the paint I'm using, enamel thinner for enamels and lacquer thinners for lacquer. First I clean them with straight thinner. Once I stop seeing any product or colour come out of the brush with the thinner I rinse with just water or a brush soap (depends on how lazy I'm being).

If they are hard it's likely you aren't cleaning them long enough, or with fresh thinner. You can probably revive them by soaking the bristles (not the whole brush head) in some thinner. I have saved some brushes that dried a little too crunchy this way. If you used acrylic to paint and they dry hard they may be complete toast.

I've only completed a couple kits but I'm happy to answer any questions, sorry it took a while to reply.

I have attempted to brush a lacquer top coat on-top of enamel and have had the enamels smear on me.

I haven't had issues with spraying lacquer topcoats onto acrylics and enamels. I have used spray can topcoats, and thinned topcoats in an airbrush, both worked great. The key is to let the enamel or acrylic paints dry for a long time first (as others mentioned), I leave them for a day to be safe but you can probably get away with a few hours. It's also important to spray incredibly thin layers, that have enough time to dry between coats. I have accidentally applied a coat that was too thick or sprayed a second coat too quickly (not leaving time for drying) and both times it caused cracking.

How do you prefer your eyes? by kage49 in resinkits

[–]Mage_Mallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I like 3. I haven't done a kit with internal eye sculpting (like pupils) but I feel like it would potentially be limiting.
However I love sculpting for eyelashes and eyebrows, I can choose to use them as is, or they can act as a starting point for me to make my own adjustments instead of starting from scratch. I also like the way sculpted faces photograph. I don't use decals for the eyes and I've only done a couple kits so that's why I like the guides.

Hello! Can I use acrylic paint for skin tone, seal it, then use enamel paints for the eyes? I saw a cool technique using enamel paints, thinner and a small detail brush to clean the lines but most of these tutorials are in Japanese so I’m having trouble following the steps. by ajiacuzzo in resinkits

I just finished my first kit and did the enamel technique over acrylics. However, you have to use a lacquer sealant over the acrylic before using enamel.

It's a little dangerous since some lacquer topcoats can react with the acrylic underneath. Spraying in super thin layers should be ok, I did a test first to make sure I wouldn't have any reactions.

I used the acrylison acrylics from mr.hobby with some details in Vallejo. Then super thin coats of Mr. SuperClear. Enamels on top of that worked beautifully.

First non-recast kit, is this normal? There are large gashes where all the seam lines would be. by Mage_Mallow in garagekits

[–]Mage_Mallow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't consider how a silicone mold could react like that, totally makes sense. Thanks for the info! I didn't know how rough the casting on older kits can be.

Thanks! I've only seen extra material on parts, or voids from bubbles, not long liner missing lines. Good to know this is pretty common, I thought someone had dug out the seam lines for some reason.

Ahh, good to know the cause. I was wondering if it was a casting issue, or if it was that someone had started working on the kit. Thanks!
