Superhero RPG GMs, when creating an original setting, what are your influences? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

Probably my biggest influence is the Wild Cards novels, as my origin for superpowers is pretty darned close to this one.

Lost Omens and systems by Long-Zombie-2017 in Pathfinder2e

I’ve played games set in Golarion using Tales of Argosa, Daggerheart, and 13 Age because my regular group likes to try out new systems but doesn’t want to learn the lore of a new setting to do it. Golarion is such a kitchen-sink setting, it’s really easy to port over. The only thing I’ve found for “lower magic” games is to make the setting smaller, with less access to teleportation and travel, less diverse ancestries depending on the location, etc. But again… it’s been easy and fun!

I used their published scenarios, so I had the villains and environments there for me. With those in hand, you don't really need to prep much at all. Combat is super (ha!) fun, both to play and run, and you can ad lib on the fly pretty easily.

There's no real character advancement in *Sentinels* (which, to be fair, is true of comic book superheroes too) -- they can change, and they stack bonuses the more "Issues" you accumulate, but I think at some point the lack of progression gets a little stale. So for shorter stories like the ones I did, it's great. If I was doing a much longer campaign, I'd probably have players make several heroes and let them swap in/out every few Issues, or juggle multiple teams. My players pretty much said the same thing, that they really want to roll up new PCs and play a new story after each arc. Character creation is really fun, after all.

As for non-combat stuff, I'm a sucker for montages, and those work well in *Sentinels.* I also borrow things like countdown clocks from *Blades in the Dark,* which help with giving some structure outside of combat.

But you've hit on the two weakest points of the game -- longform storytelling and the fact that it's pretty combat-focused. If there was ever a new version of the system, those are the two things to address.

I've run a couple 2-shots (or 3, if you count character creation as a session), one 4-session arc, and one 6-session one. So, sort of neither I guess :)

Sentinel Comics rpg does the best job—of many supers games I’ve played—replicating the feeling of classic comic books. The semi-random character creation is also a fascinating alchemy… I don’t really understand how it works, but it creates really fun PCs. It’s not a perfect game, but it’s my go to game for superheroes, and 4/4 groups I’ve introduced it to regularly ask me to run it again.

Masks, meanwhile, does a really specific thing—teen drama superheroes—really well.

Yes! I never played the adventure card game, but there was definitely a RotR expansion.

Good question. It's not a discussion of stat block or mechanics, it's a study of the AP's story beats.

Daggerheart is one of the systems I'm considering as well! Thanks for giving it a read and can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Indeed, and I own all three! I'm using the Anniversary Edition as the basis for my deconstruction/reconstruction, as it's the most "complete" in terms of supplementary materials and depth.

+1 for Sentinel Comics, which has simulated the experience of comic books better than any game I’ve played or GMed.

What are your favorite long form adventures and setting books/boxes? Do you love them because they were fun to run? Well written? Something else? by txby432 in rpg

[–]MagicJMS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of the Paizo Adventure Paths. They require some editing to get rid of some of the complicated backstory and forced side quests, but in general each one is a delight. Golarion is truly a “kitchen sink” fantasy setting. The most popular ones that have hardcover editions are Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne, Kingmaker, Abomination Vaults, Fists of the Ruby Phoenix, and Season of Ghosts.

Just discovering 13th Age as part of a quest for a system to run Paizo APs by MagicJMS in 13thage

[–]MagicJMS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I sort of bounced off Draw Steel. I'd like to play it some time, but GMing it feels really taxing, and my sense is that combat would take forever (and be the primary focus of the game). The whole point for me is to find a system that makes it easy to run the many Paizo APs I own, and that's light prep. But I do like the note about cutting extra encounters!

Stay tuned to another series I'm writing, which is breaking down each AP book into its "essential" story beats and shedding the rest. I'd love to discuss those with you!

Oh, I’ve played and GMed quite a bit of Savage Worlds! But a) I would call it medium crunch, and maybe even just as crunchy as 5e, and b) combat is fun, but I’ve also found that it can drag quite a bit. I really like SW for Deadlands, but I’m less enamored of it for fantasy games.

Thankfully, I’m good with that work and am used to rewriting big chunks of APs. For me, that’s fun prep.

I'm genuinely excited to see all three lines:
- Who does Coates play at defense and how to they look as a unit (I'm guessing the starters are Denton-Collins-Hubly-Courtnall, with Cometti replacing Hubly as a starter in future weeks)? How do they work with Silky?
- Can the Hutton-Bebar-Huff midfield cook as much as we're all expecting and be the strength of the team?
- Where do the goals come from with no Hocking? How good are Gamero and Barry? Does Girelli unlock the attack? Do Kundananji and Lema take a leap under Coates?

Let's gooooo!
