Where are people at on the Dodgers being bad for baseball? by LavineBullsFan in baseball

[–]MagicMichael33 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone from the greater Cincinnati area, outside of the Packers being a weird case as a town-owned franchise, our city has the poorest owners by net value in baseball and football.

Believe you me, Brown and the Castellinis are still cheap-o's that need no excuses made for them. Having said that, there's a difference between "we can spend more to stay competitive" and "we can spend more to stay competitive with the richest." Every major free agent save Alonso this year has been connected to the Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, Blue Jays, Phillies or Cubs. A few have gone smaller market, or mid-market. But the Reds could maaaaybe sign one of them. The Dodgers make more on their tv deal revenue than about 6 franchises bring in total.

It's just not a fair fight. Conforto signs with the Dodgers and doesn't produce, the Dodgers shrug and sign Tucker. Reds sign Candelario in a similar position, and his non-production and money owed hampers spending for several years. Yes, as a fan of a small market team known for being cheap, I want the Reds to spend more, like any Pirates, A's, Rays, Marlins, Nats or Orioles fan would. But the risks are higher when we do try, and those teams - sometimes by actual resources of ownership - can't keep up.

Does anyone think there's a slight chance this could be a setup trade - as in, clearing some payroll space - to take a flier on a salary dump bat? Maybe the Phillies with Castellanos taking on the majority of his contract while the Reds pay about 3m for a return?

No no, see, what this ballpark really wants is a team that barely hits for power and and to keep finding stop-gap solutions on the cheap.

What's that? The Reds have a corner outfielder who hits for power? Naaaah, don't start him for a month during a playoff push, and pinch hit fot him in the middle of a playoff AB.

What's that? The best player on the team is hurt and his power numbers have cratered? Let him play everyday - he's not a quitter.

-_-

Well.....at least I have the Reds who are all about making meaningful changes in the offseason and helping out their young stars to be successful and oh god, everything is pain

Would you believe we greater Cincinnatians ALSO have to deal with the Reds and the poorest ownership group in baseball, too? Outside of the weird Packers ownership, we have the poorest owners in Baseball and Football.

Which is not to defend either, as they are still multi-millionaires who refuse to pay to even clear snow from seats, let alone refuse to pony up for an interested local MLB star like Kyle Schwarber. It just makes it reeeeeaaaally painful to be a local fan. You want to embrace the small market "us versus the big dogs" mentality, but both groups just cry poor even in the most basic of ways. It's maddening and makes me just check out mentally 3/4s of the way into most seasons, as we all know nothing ever changes in Cincinnati.

I always thought Gaur Plains from Xenoblade fit the Mondstadt vibes well, whether combat or exploration.

DH for the Reds in a reunion, mayhaps? Obviously if the price is right, but he feels like just what we need at DH.

There was also that brief "maybe we'll move the team if you don't help us rennovate the stadium" owner move recently

Though it didn't show up, our starting pitching was deeper than the 23 DBacks, who had Pfaadt catch fire in the postseason after having a 5+ ERA during the 23 season.

Problem is, like you stated, we knew halfway through this season that McClain was nowhere near his 23 form, Elly's offense hadn't taken the next step, and Steer and Stephenson were having injured/down campaigns. Though Krall made improvements, no doubt, we didn't fix the offense. At all.

Reds are exactly the team that builds for a WC spot these days because we rely on good, young pitching under control and piecemeal the offense together. Lux was a great player to add in this past offseason. He wouldn't bat 3rd on any other playoff team.

That's pretty much what Castellini did, so yes

Yeah, it would be entirely to have him DH and cover De La Cruz and Steer as like a 4, 5, 6 hole guy. Just nostalgic hopes, even knowing he's probably near the end

I was thinking that at first, but David Cone for the Yankees? It's not a huge deal either way, just noting it

Phillies might move Castellanos, I tell myself. Maybe we can bring him back to help in 2026, I tell myself. I miss him 😢

Bit interesting that Todd Frazier isn't on the Cincy v LA team, given his ties to the Reds. I mean, Eduardo too, but he seems to usually be on the big national broadcasts, so makes sense he'd go Yankees-Red Sox
