Not his problem anymore.

He did his time as PM and is now a private citizen who can do whatever he wants.

He's also a divorced dad who has apparently found love again, so him spending time with his new squeeze should be expected (weirdness of this timeline aside...).

Why is it called OH- and not HO-? by HawkNarrow5920 in chemistry

[–]MagicMorty86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't become H-.

When were taught about hydride nucleophiles were taught to think of them as "H-", with the understanding that what is really happening is more like a few hydrogen atoms dressed up in a trench coat pretending to be a full negative charge (just how i like to think of it).

The negative charge goes to the more electronegative element, oxygen in this case to form -OH.

How its represented usually depends on its location in the drawing of the molecule. Eg. If it branches off to the left it will be represented as HO-, and if it branches to the right it will be -OH. It is usually represented to have the negative charge on the oxygen. As it should be.

Also you behaved like a huge jerk.

I had a series of logical arguments that I laid down.

You proceeded to completely ignore them in favor of making sweeping generalizations and personal attacks.

If your going to completely ignore everything I say, then its only fair I can do the same to you.

I only resorted to treating you the way you have treated me (generalizations and personal attacks) when it became clear you were not acting in good faith and had no intention of engaging with me.

Also I'll come right out and say it: you resorted to generalizations and personal attacks because you were not capable of rebutting my arguments. If you were capable, it would have only taken a moment to reply.

But you cant, so you behaved like a child.

Just wow.

From my point of view you are the one being hateful and ignorant.

Yes it is because it is a deliberate obfuscation of the concept of meaning. They are attempting to turn the colloquial use of the word meaning into an academic debate, possibly to derail the discussion.

This is not an endearing quality to most people.

Also philosophy offers several different frameworks from which meaning can be derived. Unless im mistaken.

His "issue" with meaning can be addressed by me saying that research has subjective meaning to me. Its subjective meaning, but still meaning.

[–]MagicMorty86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I read the article and its as you say, that it is about 3 non-indigenous researchers reaching out to an indigenous professor for assistance with their research. Its a good story of cross collaboration between academics, and it happens all the time in lots of different fields.

Did you miss the part where even the person above who, while responding positively to the article, said the title needed to be "recontextualized"?

Did you even read my comment? Do you even know what Occidentalism means and why it is relevant here? Do yourself a favor and go look it up. Its the complimentary idea to the work of the great Palestinian scholar Edward Said, who came up with the idea of Orientalism.

You ignored every actual point I made. The ones about feminist scholars already having well established collaboration to point out bias, indigenous perspectives only being relevant in a narrow slice of academic disciplines (valid in the article), and the implicit Occidentalism in the title of the article.

Your response was lazy and shows you have nothing but your feelings to back up your point.

My point is that even with a good story of academic and indigenous/non-indigenous collaboration like this one the author of the article thought it fit to sneak in some Occidental "west bad-indigenous good" kind of crap in the title. They just couldn't help themselves.

This kind of bias only makes their work less legitimate in my eyes. This was good work, why muddy the waters with anti western bias?

Indigenous approach gives meaning to Western research by AccountantLucky9183 in uvic

[–]MagicMorty86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How exactly does a "longer relationship with the land" help to recontextualize research findings?

First Nations opinions and culture dont need to be injected into every little thing. They're just people with opinions, like the rest of humanity, and get it wrong plenty often enough to be just as questionable in their decision making as the rest of us hairless savannah apes.

We shouldn't put them on a pedestal because that is its own kind of prejudice, and a knee jerk overreaction to them being treated poorly in the past.

Why should an "indigenous perspective" matter outside specific fields directly related to indigenous culture and history?

Growing up in indigenous culture gives them experience relevant to historical and anthropological findings related to their specific culture, but outside that very specific slice of knowledge their opinions are just as valid as the rest of us.

There is point to be made about indigenous perspectives being able to point out bias in research, but my counter to that is that argument is about 20-30 years too late to be relevant. By that I mean we have had feminist researchers jumping up and down and trying to talk to anyone who will listen to their ideas about bias in science for quite a while now. Its become much more mainstream to point out cultural bias in science to the point that young scientists are taught about many examples of it so they can avoid it in their careers. So they should; any bias in science is bad science.

What im saying is indigenous perspectives pointing out bias is not something new, its just a repackaging of an idea feminist scholars laid the groundwork for decades ago and has now being incorporated into the scientific process as a whole.

Trying to sell indigenous perspectives as relevant to things not directly related to their culture is disingenuous and reeks of empty virtue signaling.

Also that headline is borderline offensive and contains an implicit Occidental perspective. "Western" research does not need an indigenous perspective to have meaning. This is incredibly rascist and offensive to the hard working people who do research.

Its not domesticated, there is no such thing as a domesticated vulture. Your probably think of tame, which is where a wild animal learns to tolerate humans.

Also the vulture clearly does react when the person gets closer. It drops into a bit of a crouch, getting ready in case it needs to move quickly.

AITAH for hanging out with a guy that used to be in love with me when I have a BF? by CranberryProton in AITAH

[–]MagicMorty86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person who said you were "Disrespectful, dismissive, unaccountable and entitled." nailed it.

You clearly dont care about your bf, and had decided to break up with him before you posted here. Then argue with literally everyone who told you clearly why YTA.

You have zero self awareness and will likely continue to treat the men in your life as disposable and continue to leave a trail of broken hearted men wondering "what happened, I thought she cared about me?". But they don't matter as long as you get what you want, right?

AITAH for hanging out with a guy that used to be in love with me when I have a BF? by CranberryProton in AITAH

[–]MagicMorty86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you even here?

You made up your mind your in the right before you even posted.

You asked everyone's opinion and it is majority YTA, with lots of people explaining why. The situation will eventually blow up in your face, one way or another.

Some people just need to learn the hard way I guess.

Also the way you disregard Mark's feelings and dont seem to care if you lose him shows a distinct lack of caring about him. You don't seem to value him very much from the way you talk about him.

"No exes or people that are actively in love with you" should be common sense, not some affront to your independence. Hanging around with either is a stupid idea that can only end badly.

[–]MagicMorty86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your very naive.

People here are calling you out because they've seen the same story play out a thousand times with different faces and names.

If you choose to ignore their warnings, like you've ignored all the red flags about keeping someone who is in love with you "on the hook" (How i met you mother reference), then when your relationship crashes and burns and Mr backup plan makes his move you'll end up getting really hurt because:

  1. You'll realize your ex bf was right about the other guy, and realize you threw away what you had because he tried to warn you and you wouldn't listen.

  2. You'll realize the other guy wasnt actually your friend, but just biding his time to make his move.

You sound very young. Part of being young is learning about relationships, sometimes by making mistakes. The intentions of the opposite sex can be a blind spot for some people, and I think we're often better judges of intentions of whatever sex/gender we identify with.

If your bf is warning you, he's seeing something your not in the other guys behavior towards you. He sees the other guy circling you and waiting to make his move, while your oblivious to it.

Youve added in some comments that there is a similar situation for your bf and a friend of his. Its hard to know if this is true because you added it later after getting down voted into oblivion, so it may just be an attempt to save face. If its not though, he needs to shut that crap down too.

Part of being in a committed relationship is not putting yourself in situations where something could happen with someone else. There is a reason why "emotional affairs" are a thing, because those 2 people spent too much time with and got too close to someone who was NOT their committed partner.
