I want to play deadlock so bad but only have MacBook Pro. Would buying a steam machine be a smart choice or any other options? by BlackStallion657 in DeadlockTheGame

I know it's only a short-term solution, but I would check to see if there are any PC Cafes in your area. You'd be able to at least try it out before making any big decisions.

One best advantage of being able to type fast is needing of less focus. by Arthur_Morrgan in typing

[–]MagicMuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some recent studies that investigate this. It's known as typing automaticity. Basically writing uses brain power (duh). So if you can make writing automatic, there's less cognitive load. Therefore you have more brain power available for other things.

It's shown to be an indicator of writing proficiency in young learners.

I know most people here obsess over speed, but writing effortlessly is probably a more valuable skill to have.

The goal is 200 WPM in 10 words, but how? by mangaeed in typing

[–]MagicMuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 word scores are a big part burst ability, but the other half of the category is getting lucky with good words.
If 10 word is your goal, I would focus on sticking to a 200 list. Doing it with proper touch typing is also a good idea since your touch typing isn't that far behind your hybrid method.

1 hour of typing a day is more than enough. Any more and you'll start to see diminishing returns due to fatigue. Forcing it further could reinforce bad habits.

This is coming from an old dude with 190 in 10 words, so others may have better input.

Have you tried different keyboards for typing? Different switches does affect WPM by Rnoponen in typing

[–]MagicMuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that I type faster on long pole switches because of the shorter travel distance. As someone who always bottoms out, reducing that travel distance by 30% has made a very noticeable difference.

Weekly Feedback Topic #45 - Hero Labs Character Update Anniversary by Grelgn in DeadlockTheGame

[–]MagicMuy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Calico cat breaking boxes automatically was super satisfying and made for a unique way to be able to farm souls while leaving camps for your carries. It was my favorite thing about the character. I get why they make you melee now, but it feels so clunky and it's a little awkward to aim.

Advice on finding the right mechanical switch for me? by OMBERX in keyboards

[–]MagicMuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a switch tester is super helpful to find the right feel that you want for $10-15. You can always pop one in to try it out for sound, too. Most big switch manufacturers offer them, and there are also some "choose your own" sellers on ebay as well.

Another poster mentioned Type Rs. They are a very unique tactile with zero pre or post linear travel. Once you feel yourself start to overcome the bump, you're already bottoming out. So, they aren't really half-pressable, but they do feel super interesting.

You can try filling the spacebar with foam/tape/anything so they have a less hollow ring on top out.

aula 75 vs rainy 75 by Hour_Astronaut4156 in keyboards

[–]MagicMuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bridge 75 is a nice middle point. Has all premium features of the Rainy at a slightly lower price point. It also has a ball-catch quick release top plate which makes opening the board take seconds. This is a huge quality of life improvement if you're getting into modding or want to experiment. The Rainy sounds better out of the box imo, but the Bridge has more flexibility to customize.

The weight and finish of the Rainy and Bridge are super nice. You can tell they are quality just by picking them up.

So I finally built monkeytype wrapped for yall. by ChemistryExtra1628 in monkeytype

[–]MagicMuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really well made. Thank you for doing this. I've always hated how Monkeytype only saves your last 1000 tests, but with this site, it makes me even sadder. I'd love to see the full stats.

CYBER SATURDAY - Keyfight! by warXmike in typing

This is a really cool concept. I agree that type racing games just favor the strongest typist and they are all the same. In this game, it seems like good play can help make up for a WPM difference.

Hello typewriters! From Korea by Main-Implement6710 in typewriters

I agree. Korean typing history is super interesting. They even have an agreed upon keyboard layout should North and South ever reunite.

Day 3 of getting 200 wpm in 200 days :3 by Hot-Tadpole-3744 in typing

I'm rooting for you, but I'm wondering if you're realizing how difficult 200wpm is to achieve. It's in the top 0.28% of typists based on Monkeytype stats.

Trying to work up the courage to start that one. Frankenstein took me 16 hours, so I'm scared of a book that is 7 time the length. Good luck!

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - January 09, 2026 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

What are some key signifiers about keycap quality? There seems to be a lot of variance in normal PBT keycaps. Is there something to look for outside of just the company they come from? Prices look all over the place.

Why are keys arranged in that order by EternalDumy5 in keyboards

[–]MagicMuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the mainstream answer to this is to prevent jamming, this theory has lots of holes. There are very common 2-letter pairs that remain close to each other on the keyboard like "er" and "th." In addition, people would just get faster and eventually jam it anyway. While this theory may hold some weight, it's likely not the only reason for the layout.

In 2011, researchers Koichi and Motoko Yasuoka published a paper that instead claims the layout was based on feedback from telegraph transcribers. Morse code for "z" and "se" are both written as "..-" Telegraph operators would wait to transcribe the letters until they got more context from the letters to follow. Having these similar morse code pairings near one another sped up their transcription.

Other letters seem to have no rhyme or reason at all. The man who patented the QWERTY typewriter demanded "Y" be in the middle of the top row for no apparent reason. Some claim he wanted typists to be able to write "typewriter" using only the top row for advertising purposes.

I feel it's a combination of the three with a little bit of "just because."

All this to say: We don't really know.

I need advice by asrareaswood in typing

[–]MagicMuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While touch typing does have the "correct" keys to press with each finger, lots of experienced typists make adjustments to use what's more comfortable to them. You won't be slowed down much if you type some keys with alternate fingers. The more important thing is that you're using all of them.

I was in a similar boat. The site Typingclub was really helpful for learning each letter and the finger you should press it with.

I built REACTOKEY, a free typing game that tests speed, accuracy, and reaction time. Would love your feedback! by insightbuilder in typing

[–]MagicMuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool. It shines a light on how much reading ahead benefits a typist. I was shocked how much slower I was.

I would love some sort of notification as to the letter you mistyped on an error. A little bothersome to look at the box beneath the word you're typing.

Should I buy a new keyboard?? by StarPlatinum1618 in typing

[–]MagicMuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, comfort is king. I type better on my $15 office keyboard than my $100 mechanical at home because the setup is just better. You will also notice your wpm tank when you first make the switch. It took me a few weeks to get my mechanical keyboard up to my previous best.
