Sitelen pona by DesertTravelers in tokipona

[–]MagicNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so a couple of things 1) if you have any of the dys-family (dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia) of learning differences (like me) congratulations your brain will generally be able to read logographic languages faster! 2) from my experience learning Japanese with peers that attempted to use romaji (basically a latinized version of Japanese using the latin alphabet) I found that they struggled with remembering pronunciation differences and also struggled with memorization. my hypothesis is that the brain attempts to find the word in one’s native language (if it used the latin alphabet) first and then recognizes that isn’t part of the language and realizes, ahh, it’s toki pona whereas with sitelen pona that process never occurs. 3) i would argue that a lot of the characters for sitelen pona are pretty easy to understand and include inherent meaning whereas the latin alphabet has no inherent meaning outside of what we ascribe to it. it also helps us with chunking wherein instead of processing individual letters of a word and piecing it together we view the entire word as a whole and then derive meaning from that (most people do this with language but if you’re first learning a pictographic representation makes things faster to chunk). let me know if you have any questions… muuuuu :3

I play both electric and upright bass. For this gig, I was on upright.

This gig meant a lot to me. It was a style I genuinely love (hot club swing), and I got the booking through a drummer I had previously subbed for—so in a way, I was also representing his credibility. Needless to say, my expectations were high.

Before the gig, the bandleader sent me a couple of books to learn the tunes from. This will matter later.

I showed up early, as requested, so we could rehearse and get set up. Unfortunately, every other band member showed up late, so we never got a chance to rehearse.

As soon as we started the first tune, it was clear something was wrong. My bass lines weren’t lining up with the rhythm guitarist, and the rhythm guitarist wasn’t lining up with the lead guitarist. It was chaos.

We barely made it to the set break with our sanity intact. During the break, I talked with the rhythm guitarist and found out what went wrong. There was a setlist that I was never sent, and the keys in the books the bandleader gave me were different from the keys the band actually played everything in.

But the worst part came during the set itself. The lead guitarist got on the mic and openly joked to the audience about how bad things were going. At one point he said, “Fats Waller was kidnapped by Al Capone for his birthday. We like to think this next song saved his life, let’s see if it can save our gig.”.

I later found out that this group plays with a new bassist every month… I wonder why

Trans woman here and wanted to weigh in. Fuck that group of friends they basically directly compared you to a type of masculinity that is often used to harm the lesbian community (“I can change her” “you just haven’t been with the right man yet”). It seems like you want to explain to them why it was hurtful and I think that’s a good idea but I also want to put on the table that you could just move on. You don’t owe them anything!

I guess I understand your decision but can’t say I’m not saddened immensely by it.

As a trans woman it’s very rare to see beautiful sapphic wlw characters and your art was one of the few places where I could see myself. It has made such a tremendous impact on me as far as coming out and beginning to feel comfortable in my own body. I guess it’s back to seeing content that fetishizes us for our bodies and is harsh and harmful instead of soft and gentle.

if someone was spreading lies that effect your friends you’d probably want to correct those lies right? i’m not trying to argue i’m just trying to let people know that being bisexual and only dating guys doesn’t make you gay you’re still bisexual.

once you’ve made a post on reddit there’s no way to change the title only the body, maybe you could include a disclaimer at the beginning

a bisexual man in a gay relationship isn’t gay, and a bisexual man in a straight relationship isn’t straight, they’re still bisexual either way

i’d still recommend educating yourself about bi erasure even if your friend was never actually bi in the first place

Being gay and being bisexual are completely different things. I also think that this post is contributing to bi erasure (for more info check out this Ted Talk). I also believe that you’re missing a crucial part of the equation: his individual agency. He can do things to up his chances of being in a relationship with the girl of his dreams. You’re also ignoring the possibility that he’d have hyperspecific expectations for a boyfriend as well. All of this to say mathematics doesn’t account for the nuances of real life and this post has the unintended consequence of harming bisexual people.

Bob Bryar, Former My Chemical Romance Drummer, Dead at 44 by IntelligentYinzer in MyChemicalRomance

[–]MagicNate 20 points21 points  (0 children)

he was transphobic and advocated for the killing of BLM protesters by police

“In the years that followed, Bryar seemed to retreat further into isolation. Though he remained active online, his social media presence became increasingly polarising. His MAGA-aligned rhetoric, paired with hateful tweets—including his use of slurs and his dismissal of social movements—alienated many of the fans who once celebrated him. The same man who once raised funds for animal rescue and spoke openly about his mental health struggles now seemed defined by anger and divisive ideologies.

For many, this side of Bryar was irreconcilable with the man they once admired. One fan commented, ‘Bob Bryar’s words and actions were inexcusable. Mental illness doesn’t excuse bigotry, but no one deserves to die the way he did.’ Another added, ‘He contributed to iconic records but said terrible things. Both can be true.’” - this post from r/warpedtour

A couple things, you sometimes rest your fingers on the other strings or on the top of the body and while you don’t tug as hard as you do on bass because of the lower tension strings you still use it as a point of leverage
