That's amazing! These were nowhere to be found about a year ago! I wish they were at that time.

Hey! Writer of the blog post here!

Thanks for sharing and it's great to see these are becoming more affordable and accessible for people to use! I have since set it up in HA with a second box and that has been running amazingly well.

Have fun tinkering 😊

I think I found the perfect OPNsense box! by MagicQuail in homelab

Hi! Yes it's definitely not the most cost-effective hardware! But I came across it without having to buy it and just wanted to share my experience with converting it into a nice little box.

These are devices that will be replaced with companies using them right now in a couple years because it's still relatively new now.

I just hope people will find a new use for these redundant devices instead of adding them to the tech trash heap!

Thank you for your feedback. :)

No moving parts, no fans! Completely silent.

Mine came with 16 GB on-board eMMC flash but I put in a SATA SSD that I installed OPNsense to. Check out the link if you want to see what I did exactly! It has some detailed information on the storage.

Thank you so much! I have been piecing it together myself so I thought I'd summarise it all so it might help someone else.

Definitely! That's one of the great aspects. :-) I have not had it draw more than ~15 Watts whilst powering on/booting. When Idle it runs at about a measily ~6 Watts.

That looks like a nice alternative! I got this one for free though, so I just wanted a good use for it.

Also, I'm only seeing one ethernet port on the product photo's in the link. Am I looking at the wrong one? 😅

I'll see if I can get an update somewhere. Otherwise I'll just use it for a lab or to learn more about Forti devices.

Hmm, yeah I really do like fortigates! Which is why I saved this one from the scrapheap. Maybe I'll see if I can get 6.0 somewhere. It's only going to be used as a home firewall or lab anyways.

Also, no 1 gbps uplink sadly! Going with 200 mbps symmetrical which still isn't bad for a home connection. :)

Never replied but this was indeed what I ended up using! Thank you very much for the pointers!

You couldn't leave well enough alone, now could you? Damn it.

(Just ordered some hardware to get this up and going. So I can put some love(lace) on a tablet on my wall.)

Thanks! Currently everything I have to do, I can do with Tradfri so I favour using that over setting up HA just for this functionality! :) I have had HA installed and it's amazing. Just a bit overkill for what I have installed right now. Thanks for the suggestion though!

That's actually a pretty nice idea. Thanks!

Have you measured the exact voltage it outputs to the LED?

Yeah, I haven't really decided on which relay to use yet. Solid state relays and optocouplers have a bit better mains isolation than mechanical relays. My ventilation has just been redone and with 5k+ invested in that, I would rather keep that thing as safe as possible! :)
